Obscure/forgotten stuff you liked as a kid

(Anonymous) 2015-03-26 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason I started to think about Mighty Max today, which got me thinking about other stuff I used to watch as a kid but don't think about much.

How about you guys? What did you watch as a kid that doesn't usually get brought up when talking about childhood shows/movies?

Do you think you'd still enjoy those shows today? Or look for a fandom?

Pac-Man, the cartoon show.

Where I first realized that the ghosts in Pac-Man are functionally identical to the Nazgul.

Peter Pan and the Pirates. No matter how many times the media tries to shove a new version of that story down my throat, that will always be my first and favorite version.

Zoids. I used to watch it every morning before school. The only problem was that for some reason it seemed to randomly switch between two series. One was just people battling in zoids. The other was where they also had living dinosaur zoids that had to hop into big zoids.

Googling shows that the first was Zoids: New Century and the second was Zoids: Chaotic Century.

Needless to say, this switching was confusing.

All mine are half-remembered. Like one about adorable colorful puppies but it wasn't Pound Puppies. I feel like it started with an F. And there was one where kids would make wishes with the "starlight, star bright" rhyme and there might have been fairies or something, which may or may not have been the same show.

Most of the stuff I was really into is still remembered by everyone.

But if I can expand to books, did anyone else read this series about four princesses who each had a different gemstone and they also all each had a different element, animal companion, and magic item? I can't remember what it was called but I loved it when I was little.

120 Minutes when it aired on MTV. I know that VH1Classic still airs a version of this. But it's all 80's and 90's videos. Not that isn't bad. I still love all the flashbacks.

But I miss what it used to be. This two hour program airing the latest in alternative be it, punk, post-punk, new wave, goth, ska or industrial. It was a great way to discover new bands.

I wish we had it back. There are so many bands out there with so many videos on youtube that I feel overwhelmed sometimes. I would love to have the show back as a, "Here. Try these videos in genres that you listen to" way.

I feel like a lot of the shows I watched are obscure.

Conan the Adventurer -- I remember their weapons were special metal that could kill the bad guys
James Bond Jr.
The Magician -- I REALLY liked this one. A magician in the future.
King Arthur and the Knights of Justice -- I don't really remember much about this except they were a football team
Captain Planet (which probably isn't that obscure)
Iron Man/Fantastic Four hour -- I feel like this is obscure but I remember the Inhumans in it and being introduced to all the F4 villains (don't really remember the Iron Man episodes though)
Inspector Gadget -- Such a fun show; wasn't there a cat or dog that was really smart?
Beetlejuice
Invasion America -- I was getting older by the time this came out but it was so good and I wish I could find it again
Taz-Mania and Tiny Toons
Darkwing Duck -- which I loved but can't remember anything of now

And probably some others that I can't remember

Jace and the Wheeled Warriors.

And Guardians of the Gemstones, which was this sort of interesting rip-off of She-Ra. None of this has aged well, so I leave it in my memories.

People sometimes talk about the Aladdin TV series, but I've never heard anyone discuss the Little Mermaid TV series. I remember really liking the episode where Sebastian is kidnapped by a mad scientist who turns crabs into mutant monsters. The scientist's reluctant assistant was an interesting character with a really nice arc.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't think much of that show on rewatch.

There's also the Rescue Rangers, but I'm sure someone must be discussing that show somewhere I haven't seen. Something that popular can't have completely disappeared into the aether.

Out of this World. It was about a girl who was half alien and I always thought she had the best powers.

For the longest time I forgot what the name of the series even was, it's rarely brought up but I remember being addicted to it as a kid.

I remember it fondly.

The Girl With Silver Eyes

Did actually find fic of it on AO3, so that was interesting.

I'd like to reread it, I think I'd still like it, but maybe I'm just hoping.

Ooh! Also The Puzzle Place, and The Secrets of Droon and Quigley's Village.

Not shows, so much as books. But very few people seem to know about John Bellairs, who was my favorite writer as a kid, or I guess what would be the YA category today. His stories were just so effectively creepy and his characters were so likable and relatable, especially if you happened to be kinda nerdy and awkward yourself.

Also, people talk about Lloyd Alexander, but not so much about the Westmark books, which I liked more than Pyrdain stuff.

I used to watch 3-2-1 Contact and Square One TV.

The only things I remember about 3-2-1 Contact were a thing on bubbles where they made bubbles while a person was standing inside the bubble and they weighed a dog by holding it and subtracting the weight of the person holding the dog.

I LOVED Square One TV and Mathnet. I remember the Mathnet with the bird (1-1-2-3, Answer: 5 - Eureka), and the dodecahedron from the 12 island nation. From Square One, I remember the cartoon where they showed area and the pac-man with numbers. I wish this show was still around today.

I also watched Ghostwriter, Wishbone and some Reading Rainbow. I loved Ghostwriter but don't remember anything but the one where they went back in time. Wishbone is still my standard for a lot of literature (including him as Sherlock).

The Hatfords and Malloys series* (or The Boys Start the War/The Girls Get Even) by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. It was about a family with three daughters moving in next door to a family with four sons in West Virginia. The kids hated each other and were always pulling shenangians to get each other family in trouble (until two of the oldest fell in love, aw). There were six books when I read them, but I checked at the end of last year, and PRN finally fucking finished it in 2012 so now there's 12 books. I'm excited.

*Aaand I'm just now getting that's supposed to be a cheesy Hatfields/McCoys reference. Wow.

There was this cartoon I liked about a character/entity that came out of the internet through a printer and had adventures with children. He would go back inside the internet through a scanner.

As a child with little understanding of computers, it seemed like the Most Exciting And High-Tech thing ever.

I cannot remember what it was called, but it was named after the character and it sounded like "Ouskom"?

I WAS JUST THINKING OF MIGHTY MAX THE OTHER DAY TOO.

A lot of stuff I liked as a kid still holds up really well today. I've been rewatching Gargoyles, and, man,is it fun.

Freddie the Frog, or FR07. It was a hot mess of a movie about a prince who was turned into a frog and became a secret agent. I loooooved it, and I'll probably never find it again, at least not the version narrated by James Earl Jones.

Does anyone else remember the T-Bag and Tea Set series?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Bag

he early series I loved, but it kinda ran out of steam around the time of the re-casting. I am terrified of going back to look at it on you tube though, I know the nostalgia filter must have been strong.

And Galloping Galaxies. Which I did try to look up on youtube, but only one episode exists in a very dodgy format. I would still payout for a Galloping Galaxies DVD set though, despite it being so obviously cheaply made, even for the standards of the day. Here's the link for those that want to inflict it upon themselves:

Mighty Max! I was just rewatching old episodes of that online the other day, I used to love that show. It's still holds up pretty well, I think.

One I've mentioned here a couple times that no one but me seems to have seen, Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys. I used to get up early on weekends to watch it, it was really funny. Still one of my favorite space shows.

Another one I remember watching a lot was Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders (I think it was called Starla and the Jewel Riders in other countries?). I used to think the songs were so great when I was a kid but I haven't been able to bring myself to rewatch it because I'm sure they're all cheesy as hell.

I can't remember what it was called, but there was this show I used to watch that was always on reeeeeally early in the morning, about these kids who live in a lighthouse and have weird adventures. Like, there's one episode where one of the protagonists gets impregnated by a tree and vomits up a baby tree spirit, and another where they meet a guy who shoots ice cream out of his nose... I bet if there was fanfic it wouldn't be half as bizarre as the show itself.

Pirates of Dark Water, Swat Kats, and Sonic SatAM.

Lucky for me, all three of these series have been brought to DVD in their completion and I own them all, so I can marathon them whenever I feel overly nostalgic.

Hell, I loved Pirates of Dark Water so much that my very first paycheck was spent on recorded VHS-to-DVD rips way back in the day. I have that set as well as the official set of DVDs side by side on my book case.

Things that haven't been named yet:

Cartoons
Teen Wolf
Back to the Future
Talespin (which wasn't obscure at the time, but might be now? Ditto for...:)
Gizmoduck
Pro-Stars (Wayne Gretzky, Bo Jackson, and Michael Jordan fight evil, but I didn't remember the themesong being this bad)
Some show where a kid turned into a car whenever he got too hot.

And this one deserves to be offset from the rest: The New Kids on the Block.

Books
The Bingo Brown series
Sixth-Grade Secrets (which in retrospect is full of horrible children that assault other horrible children in the name of a prank war)
This Island Isn't Big Enough for the Four of Us

Sixth Grade Secrets!!
