Nice pun, OP. :P

And yeah, the whole "expose yourself to salt water to increase tolerance to salt water" thing struck me as kinda dodgy even before OP noted that it's been debunked.

I remember seeing that somewhere as well. I guess the thinking was "the water part of the sea water will be absorbed through your intestinal wall but the salt won't" ... except that chemically I believe your blood would try to absorb enough salt to equalize salinity between itself and the sea water. Which kinda defeats the purpose.

too bad, that sounds kinda hot.

That would certainly be an interesting fic. You could write it anyways and just fudge the science a bit. It wouldn't be the worst science fail I've ever seen in a fanfic.

Text: I saw a show years ago that said that one could survive by dehydration at sea by giving oneself a salt-water enema (assuming you had the materials, of course).

I always wanted to use this in a fanfic someday. Lots of h/co possibilities.

I finally thought of a fic where it seemed appropriate, and began reading up on the topic.

I was bummed to read that the efficiency of the procedure has been debunked (dare I say poo-poohed?) by medical science.

Hahaha, please tell me this was a Bear Grylls thing, because it sounds like his brand of survivalist BS. Sorry it didn't work out for your fic, OP!

OP

I don't remember?

I looked him up, and it could have been. All I remember is that he was on a very small raft when "demonstrating" this technique. (It was one of thse things were I came across it while channel-surfing, made a "mental note" of the technique, but never really noted the show or made an effort to watch it again after that.)

I suspect that was him. Bear Grylls is a British explorer who does a lot of TV about weird techniques to survive in the wild, like eating lizards or drinking your own pee. It's pretty funny, really.

Jup bear grils did it. It's even on YouTube (can't link on my phone)

"And then once it's in - uh-whoa - I guess all you do is lie back and think of England!"

But there it's not saltwater, it's freshwater that's all gross and full of bird droppings and he's doing it to bypass his gag reflex so he won't dehydrate himself by vomiting.

As a general rule, any survival technique that involves sticking things up your ass is probably not a good technique.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the hell would you think flooding your asshole with salt water is a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a neti pot for your colon?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But your nose isn't ... that's not ... I don't even know where to begin with that.

Well...if it doesn't work, there will be so many more H/C opportunities!

Their asses will hurt and they'll still be dying of thirst.

Oh thank god you found out, cause diarrhoea will not help any dehydration situations*

*in the unlikely event of you being trapped at sea

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
But what do you do if you're trapped at sea without a funnel and tubing (and doughnut)?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Fishbowels.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
what the hell is the doughnut for?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If that sort of thing floats your boat, you can certainly find a situation that doesn't involve salt water.
