Yeah, I sure hope it's a joke too (I mean, it probably is but on the other hand I know a lot of people who name their kids really stupid shit, fandom related or not). Change you own damn name to "Sherlock Watson" if you like it so much, especially if you already suspect that your child won't end up liking it

I hope they didn't name a girl Sherlock Watson. I want to see who responded to it and with what.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock is a girl... that bugs me most of all, though it's not a great name reagrdless.

I do know someone online actually named Éowyn, and she seems to be okay with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. People have named their kids after famous shit forever. It won't stop now.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So true. Henry the eighth had 3 wives named Katherine/Catherine, and at least the second one was named after the first, since it was cool to name your kids after royalty.

Well, you know, at least the kid can take in the comfort her insane mother didn't go with the second option of Cumberbatch Freeman ...

Okay, this made me snort, but at the same time I am horrified and hope no one would ever consider such a thing.

(They probably would since people do sometimes run with names like the ones used in OP's secret. My sister-in-law knows someone who used jedi in their kids name...)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think either of those first names are fine by themselves. Sherlock on a girl is just a little iffy because people who know her name but haven't met her will think she's a guy, but it sounds okay as a unisex name in theory. I knew an Eowyn who loved her name, and I have a friend with a student named Sherlock (boy) and she thinks it's awesome.

For twins though, ugh, they don't go together at all. And using those middle names along with them is overkill.

[personal profile] dancing_serpent 2015-03-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with that. I'm not averse to fandom names, but the right combination makes it sound good. Trying to stuff all the favourites on just one kid, for example, can only go wrong.

[personal profile] ketita 2015-03-28 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Eowyn is a pretty name, I think, and even Sherlock on its own isn't *too* awful (and kind of cool for a girl, in a way), but the combo of both these names is a killer.

Could have been worse. Could have been 'Pippin Galadriel Moonchild' ;)

Eowyn is actually a pretty name, very anglo-saxon sounding. I wouldn't have minded that. 'Sherlock' is a lot dodgier, and the middle names are just way over the top. Poor kids.

There are women in the Holmes canon, though. Why not use one of those, if you wanted a Holmes name? Irene, Violet ... Mary's maybe a little common, I'll grant. If you wanted to go sideways and come back at it, you could even go 'Olivia' (Flaversham). There's a few others from LotR as well. Some of the hobbit names might match well with Holmes. The Took names were quite Victorian sounding in places: Belladonna, Mirabella ...

Actually, Irena and Mirabella. If they were my twins and my fandoms, I'd have named them Irena and Mirabella.

Image: a Tumblr anonymous ask

Hello! I’ve just had twin girls (about a month ago now) and I’ve named them Sherlock Watson and Eowyn Rohan, which definitely earned us some odd looks in the hospital, but whatever! Just wondering, what do you think of the names? I’m not sure the girls will grown up to like them or not!

Secret Text: Post like these make me hate fandom

(I really hope this person was joking)

In 1998, I had a son. We named that son after my husband's father and grandfather. We agreed that if we should have another son, we would name him after my father and grandfather.

In 2007, I had a second son. We named him after my father and grandfather. The name is Jacob Edward.

"Oh, a Twilight baby!" cheered the cashier at the grocery store.

What? A what baby? I had never heard of such a thing. Of course then I had to find out what she meant. By then, of course, the Twilight fandom was starting to really explode although I'd not ever heard about it until that moment.

My youngest son will be branded a Twilight Baby forever, I'm afraid. It does no good to explain that he was named after my father and grandfather. Nobody will believe me. :\

I hope that it's a joke as well. Otherwise I just feel really bad for the children. :/

Name your pets after fandom shit all you want, that's what I do. But please, just don't expose your children to that sort of stigma.

There are lots of girls named Éowyn believe it or not (Lord of the Rings was VERY popular with my parents generation. I went to elementary school with two Eowyn's and an Arwen and I was in elementary school in the 80s. Also two Leias'. I have meet one Padme at a con.) Sherlock just...doesn't work for a girls name or a boy's name (if you live in the states maybe you can get away with it in the UK?).

But yeah it was probably a joke post or a troll blog. Or you are posting this as a joke/troll.

I know someone who named her daughter Arwen. It's a little odd because her other daughter has a totally common, not-at-all-fandom-related name.

pfft that's nothing. You guys have no idea how bad baby names can get.

My hometown is hippie central - it's full of pot-smoking, hemp-wearing, drum-banging, crystal-reading raging new age hippies. I know girls named "Rainbow Dolphin" and "Revolutionary Love and Peace". ...She introduces herself as Revy.
