"Your story has cheered me up when I really needed something to be cheerful about. Thank you."

Really, has the art of a graceful thank you for a shit/weird gift completely died?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of, yeah. People give up very easily because it's supposedly too hard to think of something nice to say. I can only assume they weren't raised by parents who insisted they write polite thank you notes for crappy gifts and then somehow managed to avoid every single instance where a person is obliged to be nice and/or diplomatic in the face of disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Visp, that type of comment makes my week, sometimes my year.

I support this type of commenting! (anon fanfic writer)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Would it still make your week if someone admitted that your fic only cheered them up because it was so terribly written?

"Your unique voice has given me hours of enjoyment."

"Your fic always puts a big smile on my face."

"I'd say 'never change' but I doubt you would anyway, so just keep doing what you're doing."

"My nipples explode with delight."

The last one makes me wish I didn't have such a lucid imagination.

Yeah, really. I read this ridiculous smut fic the other day. I mean, it was so outrageous and terrible. But just reading the description made me laugh so hard I cried, so I left a comment saying I had a lot of fun reading the fic. There, done.

I understand this. I go by the "if you have nothing nice to say, don't. Stop. Don't." line of commenting on fic these days. So there's absolutely no way I can express the intensity of my love for a fic being awfully entertaining, so I'll just bookmark and kudos where I can.

"Thank you for writing this fic! I really enjoyed parts X, Y, and Z. My friends and I would read it together, and we had a great time."

Just be general?

If you're going to comment, I say go with "I had a great time reading this, thanks for writing!"

As long as you keep things nice I don't think there's anything wrong with commenting, however if you can't stop yourself from being snarky or insulting then leave well enough alone, lol. (Kudos, maybe.)

Text: I have been enjoying a terrible fanfic recently. It’s so bad, it’s wonderful.

I’ve gotten much joy and stress relief privately giggling over it with some friends.

I want to thank the author but how can you thank someone for making something so-bad-it’s-good without being a jerk? Especially when the fic has so many honest-to-god fans.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks for the great enjoyment reading this fic gave me"

Also - is there a duck in your image or am I imagining things?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a rubber duck in 14 too, and there were some with Ricky Gervais, and one in a Friends secret. Someone's been building a theme, but I can't see the connection.... unless it's all a game of Where's Duckie?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

The secret about wanting Elvis to be their teddy bear also had a soft toy duck in it, and I think there was one involving Dexter too.

I don't see any connection except as a signature. Or to make us wonder what the connection is!

You must become a master of the post-ironic, and give them feedback which conveys all the sincerity of your enjoyment while leaving the implicit aesthetic judgments untraceable to all but the most adept scholars.

Secrets like this always make me second guess every positive comment I've ever gotten. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't sweat it, anon. You already know not everyone's going to love your work, and that everyone who reads it will probably get something different from it. OP's still having fun and being entertained, even if it's not exactly the way the author may have predicted.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people who find fics to be "so bad it's entertaining" either don't leave comments at all or they are just openly rude. I wouldn't second guess nice comments too much. Even if somebody didn't really like it there are plenty of people who are genuinely polite and know that fanfic writers like getting comments so they just leave one without any bad intentions behind it.

Personally, as long as the commenter is polite and talk about stuff that was good and maybe some constructive criticism to show they see potential in your writing then it's all good.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen plenty of those, and I just keep my comments to myself. I wouldn't try to trick them into thinking you genuinely find it good when you don't.

but they enjoyed it??? i mean, if something thought my fic was dumb but they enjoyed it? i'd be fine with that (because most of my fics are dumb as shit, but i hope someone out there finds them fun to read.)

I want to know what fic this is.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
If I were in a 'funny' mood, I might say something a little 'too' honest and critical, like so:

'This is horrible and hilarious. ;)'

(Anonymous) 2015-03-30 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's not really so much a "funny" mood as it is you knowingly saying something unkind and rationalizing it as humor or "honesty", though. You know that, right?

That kind of comment would make a person feel really shitty.
It's not even backhanded compliment it's just mocking.

Personally, I don't mind if someone finds my writing bad as long as they can explain what was so bad about it instead of just leaving it at one brief sentence and an winky face.

It's almost as bad as, "I laughed so much but your writing really sucks honey <3". If you didn't like the fic you don't have to be a condescending asshole about it.
