allow me to clear up a misconception. many of us don't actually believe that being 100% separate from men is possible outside of some pretty extreme measures. most of us are simply trying to limit the amount of control men have over our lives. We don't work for men, we don't invite men into our private lives, but we're not stupid, we know that men being in our vicinity is unavoidable.

Well, that invalidates my comment below, but that causes a different problem. Your financial options are now severely limited if you cannot work for men or for women who've retained the "benefits" of their heterosexuality. The larger your group grows, the harder your ability to limit interaction, unless, as you state, extreme measures (commune's are fucking tough). It will be hard to grow if you cut yourselves off not only from men, but also most women. If you keep up with those women, you'll be seen as quaintly hypocritical at best, utter failures from the get go at worst.

Radfem anon, a simple question: The idea has existed in named form since the 1970's. So how come the only good try at it yet failed after a single year?

The simple fact of the matter is, even if you are successful on a worldwide scale, you will promptly start a resource war with the hated males, who, you know, you separated from because they are so violent and quick to physical altercations, which they are better at, being the aggressive monsters they are and all.

Not that it will ever reach that point. There are entirely too many women out there who have found uses for penis and they aren't changing their minds on that.

Okay I think lesbian separatism is dumb as hell, but you're building a very stupid straw man. Most lesbian separatists don't actually want to move to a desert island so as to avoid all interaction with men, they just avoid dating/being friends with men and reblog self-righteous posts on their tumblr.

I read this thread to find out what Lesbian Separatists are. I thought they might be lesbians from Quebec who wanted to separate from Canada, and was surprised that I'd never heard of them before, and also wondering why their sexuality mattered in that case.

Well, that would make more sense.

It's funny, because I was just reading a recent discussion on another comm about the current Wonder Woman comics, which are treating the DC Comics Amazons (probably the major vector of the Lesbian separatism meme in the last century) as kind of scary murderous types, and whether that's appropriate.

So I'm getting this from two directions now.

Lesbian separatism, LadyLand, Paradise Island--it's a silly idea. Places like convents and monasteries exist and can work for some people. But on a political level? It's just dumb.

Human beings aren't made of two kinds of animal that just sort of cohabit. We're one race on the basic level. If you personally want to avoid men, OK, there probably should be ways of doing that short of entering a cloistered Christian holy order. But as a political identity, it's pretty much on the level of joining a UFO cult and cutting off your tits.

So I read the thing upthread explaining it, (I am lesbian who didn't know this was a thing :/) and it seems like, for me at least, being a lesbian separatist would be nigh impossible because I don't really have the privilege of going "I will never work for a man!" I'm poor? I need to eat? I will take any job I can get. It seems like a kind of middle-class notion to me, idk.

Pretty much, though I think for a lot of people it's more or less a thing said out of frustration sometimes. Or, as someone else said, more a case of limiting how many men you're around as opposed to cutting them out altogether.

Still pretty stupid either way.

Oh, I do have a degree of privilege in this area, no doubt, without the funds to go to school, funds provided my my mother's hard work, I would have neither the contacts nor the qualifications to be a picky as I am.

The thing is, it is absolutely a lifestyle choice, and choices come after needs. A homeless person cannot be a vegetarian, and if you don't have the money to avoid working for certain types of people then no-one will judge you for doing what you need to. but as a separatist you will find that the community can be a great help in finding ways to make it more tenable. Or maybe you won't. I admit I have been lucky. what I'm trying to say is that we make only the choices we can and deal with everything else as we need to.
