[Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony, Steven Universe]

Mainly because I think the kiddie plots are fun and interesting. They're no Teletubbies or In The Night Garden. People can have different opinions, who knew.

Gravity Falls isn't all 'kiddie plots'. You can watch it just for the mystery, or the taxidermy heads leaking blood from their mouths/eyes, or for the fun not-official bits like Alex's Bill AMA where he talked about suicide, sex, and torture. All that evil Triangle demon jazz.

Myself, it's because I have two little kids and can only handle so many cartoons. If something tickles me and the kids like it, it's a win.

While I wouldn't phrase it that way, it took me a long time to get into Adventure Time for what might be the same reason. Into the Nightosphere was the first episode I really liked.

And then they did an adaptation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and I was hooked.

I don't find the plots of Adventure Time to be especially kiddie. Spaced out, yes. But in terms of insight in the writing they're more mature than a lot of live action television aimed at adults.

Gravity Falls has a lot of hidden messages in it. So if you're the particular kind of geek that likes to go over an episode with a fine tooth comb (as I am) it's completely amazing.
I for one have a nerdy love of ciphers and symbolism.
Also if you're the type of person who loves details you can come up with amazing theories that might pay off. It fun to guess and talk about with other fans.

And on another note I just find the characters completely likable and hilarious.

I like the balance between small stories and total epicness in Steven universe. Like you know there's this big thing that happened and you get to slowly learn about it through the eyes of a child. And I love reveals like that. It's also totally cute and very character driven. I admit it does get off to a slow start it took me several episodes before I was hooked.

All this about Gravity Falls, absolutely. MABEL!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Gravity Falls because it's funny, has enjoyable characters and at least has some continuity.

Adventure Time I tried to get into but it was too SO RUNDUM ROFL XD for me.

MLP was okay, but the fandom makes me cringe something fierce.

I still haven't watched Steven Universe.

I'm about halfway through Steven Universe at this point, and a lot of the early episodes do have lighthearted, low-stakes "kiddie plots"...but they all include worldbuilding, or character development, or foreshadowing. (Some of it I recognize because I came in with tons of spoilers; other things I'm only catching and appreciating while actually watching.)

The more dramatic later episodes wouldn't have the impact that they do if it weren't for the well-laid groundwork. Seriously, it's really impressive how much thought obviously went into it from the beginning.

Agreed about MLP:FiM, though. I tried to watch that twice, and bounced off it both times =/

Gravity Falls in Twin Peaks lite, don't care about Adventure Time, MLP surprised everyone, and damn, I've been blitzing through SU.
Garnet, Grunkle Stan, and Applejack are best.

They let me feel like I'm a little child again for a while. It's a nice feeling.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get the fascination either. It's like, grow up already.

Haven't tried Gravity Falls, but everything else here (and Bee and Puppycat) I did not care for much. I was a little worried it was that I was too biased towards anime, but I recently watched Song of the Sea and it was delightful.

I was considering giving Steven Universe another shot because I've heard it takes a little bit to get into, but I watched a highlight reel that left me stone cold.

You're not alone, OP.

The characters are cute and entertaining enough, but for me not engaging enough that I want to be in a fandom for them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I love Adventure Time so much (it's actually the only current show of ANY kind that I watch) and yet I just can't get into any other cartoons. I assumed I'd also love Steven Universe and loads of people have told me I'll like Regular Show, but I just can't get into them at all.

Imo those shows have pretty easy appeal, SU even has a lot of aesthetic one, but of course they're not for everyone. If you expect it to be something it's not, you're going to be disappointed when it doesn't meet those expectations (eg: MLP didn't live up to the fantasy show I thought the pilot was hinting at).

However I'm more confused by people who can get through anything so long as they're the target audience. Because I'm like the opposite of you; shows for totally mature adults such as myself are so generally drivel thanks to Murphy's Law.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I like the kiddie plots because a lot of 'adult' plots don't do it for me.

Is Samantha going to get with bad boy Greg or sweet All American boy Antonio? Oh no, Carrie's attracted to her boss/coworker lets dance around this for a few episodes/seasons. Jack has a drug/alcohol problem! Lets show them denying it and then crashing hard and then getting help and everything's fine except for maybe a quick mention that they're struggling with temptation. Oh no, Jake likes Suzy but she doesn't know he's alive until hawt guuurl Beth shows up and Suzy realizes she's jealous like whoa.

Just... nope. Not my gig. Give me weird interdimensional triangles, lesbian gemstones, and post-apocalyptic monsters made of candy. They're not better or worse, just different, and thankfully there's lots of options out there for everyone.

Okay, I have to call out on Gravity Falls. It might look kiddie, but there a WHOLE lot of foreshadowing and secrets wrapped up in the place, not to mention the mystery of the journal's author and the massive Fridge Horror.

"ancient sins... ancient sins..."

I adore GF (season 2 especially has been crazy consistent, makes the absurd waits for episodes slightly less awful), it's pretty much the definition of how to do a kids' cartoon that doesn't treat its audience like idiots and invests in its characters/plot. It's just well made all around (and the sense of mischief when it goes into un-Disneylike black humour is no end of fun). The latest mid season finale, SUCH FUCKING GOOD PAYOFF GOD DAMN

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
You know I can't say I've watched anything quite like Adventure Time. It's fun in terms of just sheer imagination and possibilities.

Text: All these shows look so cute (except the ponies maybe) but I can’t get into any of them.

The kiddie plots are just so boring. How do other adults go crazy over them?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Gravity Falls I can understand the appeal of because there's a lot of stuff in it that's very clearly a nod to adults, but agreed on the others. They're just way too kiddie for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
What about watching the CartoonHangover channel on YouTube? It's exactly this same kind of style (which I actually don't care for at all, but I enjoy the content of the shows), but it's actually not made for kids. It's not rated adult either, it's just kind of...stuff that 20-30 somethings could appreciate because it's made with us in mind? Of course there's not as much stuff out yet, but give it time. (I'm still waiting for more Bee and PuppyCat!)

All these are meh to me. It was the same to me when I was a kid; I was into adult swim.
