You disrupt panels, you get the boot. Simple as that.

If you want actually anti-Gamergate asshattery: https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2tzjih/cosplaying_vivian_james_at_magfest_a_tale_of/

Kotaku in action? Paaaaaaass.

Since I'm not an abuser of women, nor am I of shockingly low IQ, I won't be clicking that link.

So tell me, what bullshit are they spreading now?

"nor am I of shockingly low IQ"

I'm not so convinced.

This is the second time in as many days someone has refused to read one of my links because they figured the URL must mean it's horribly awful. Do I need to switch to copy-paste, or just figure out how that URL shortener site works?

either the URL-shortener, or name your links

We probably agree on most things, but this bullshit makes you look exactly like a gamergater. "Oh I'M never mean to women, therefore let's disregard everything that guy over there is doing."

Nerds are often basement-dwelling morons who have no idea how to interact with other human beings. People who are against bigotry can also be basement-dwelling morons who have no idea how to interact with other human beings. Anti-gg people can be shitty too. The fact that they're being shitty to other shitty people doesn't excuse shitty behavior.

I don't think anyone's disputing the fact that both sides of that particular issue can be complete assholes, just taking issue with the source. There are some corners of the internet that aren't worth giving traffic to, even on the once-in-a-blue-moon occasions when they manage to get something right, rather than obfuscating and blowing things out of proportion.

"I'm not disputing the fact that both sides of a particular issue can be complete assholes, just taking issue with the idea that I should believe a woman who disagrees with me could ever deserve sympathy for a type of harassment I know damn well is very common at conventions. I for some reason think hits on a reddit board matter."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, no. I take no issue with the idea that someone involved in a debate I don't really give a fuck about deserves sympathy for being harassed. Con harassment happens, and anyone who's the target of it deserves sympathy, just as anyone who perpetrates it deserves to be thrown out on their ass.

I just don't think Kotaku in Action is a reasonable source of news, any more than I'd find a Daily Mail article about harassment a reasonable source.

You have got to be trolling. They teach the difference between primary and secondary sources in high school.

like you're not wrong but KIA is not something you want to be making this argument about

It depends on what they link to--a linked article can be worthwhile, even if all the comments are bullshit.

That was me, for some reason it was anon.

Also--I see this isn't a news article, but it really doesn't make sense to me that we should believe or disbelieve cosplayers who claim harassment as to where they post the claim, when we know damn well that harrassment of cosplayers is a thing that's so constant cons need special signs.

I totally believe that someone was an asshole to a female cosplayer. I don't care if she has shitty beliefs. Shit still isn't cool.

Okay but this is like linking prolife.com in an abortion debate.

Re: Calgary Expo Vs MRA women

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
it's not a debate, it's an example of people being dickwads

no one is using it as a source to prove some assertion

they're saying "hey, this is a thing that happened"

Re: Calgary Expo Vs MRA women

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
The point I was making is it's a bad source.

Re: Calgary Expo Vs MRA women

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
why is it a bad source though, given that it's not being used for any particularly polemic point

And that's the same argument GG makes when some female developer or cosplayer says they were threatened. As a result, nothing gets fixed.

You don't understand how primary sources work, do you nonny?

They're not like secondary sources, where you try to weed out the bad by sticking to reputable publishers and peer-reviewed journals. A primary source isn't an academic work--it's often a personal accounting. Something written on a napkin, or scrawled on a bathroom stall in poop can be a valid primary source.

You look to other primary sources to corroborate the validity of the primary source. For instance, the tweet of that guy saying he almost felt bad about flipping off the Vivian James cosplayer--that's another primary source that confirms that there *was* a Vivian James cosplayer at that con, and she did receive negative attention.

The tweet being from someone who is the ideological opposite of the KiA people even serves to help negate the required concerns about bias in the accounting.

In other words, all you've shown is that you don't understand how sources work. You'll have to find another excuse to derail the conversation and take the focus off of the woman who was victimized.

Yeah, but if you actaully want to fucking engage with people, you need to listen to them. Even if you don't like them.

You don't win the abortion debate by going "NYAH NYAH NYAH I DON'T HEAR YOU AND I WON'T EVEN ATTEMPT TO MAKE A CASE FOR ABORTION RIGHTS THAT REFUTES YOU." That's how you backslide. Which frankly I can see happening, a lot of people who oppose bigots think the best thing to do is create "safe spaces" rather than kicking the bigots' asses, which requires actual confrontation.
