Image: Two pictures of actor Ioan Gruffudd. In the top picture, he's hugging a woman. In the bottom picture, he's in his Horatio Hornblower costume and covering his face with his hand.

Text: I'm a gigantic hurt/comfort fan when it comes to this man. I've written dozens of fics featuring his characters going through emotional breakdowns and requiring cuddles and caretaking.
So you'd think I'd enjoy the few canon instances where this happens.
Except it turns out that he's kind of an ugly crier (See: that one bit in The Wrong War), which goes against the image I have in my head and makes me wince.
And then I feel guilty for not appreciating it.
I have no idea what to do about this.

Lately, I can’t bring myself to judge people’s taste in music based on the musicians themselves.
I can still say things like “this song sounds boring”.
But I’ve started feeling for fans of popular targets for hdu listen to this person who did/does iffy things, or is tacky, or is a sell-out, or whose face I dislike etc. tirades.
This happened after rediscovering fandoms for my old faves (who I still like), and some self-reflection.
I think a lot of fans will jump ship once what they like is outweighed. It’s just that different people have different levels of tolerance. I’m not defending celebrities who consistently do shitty, harmful things. But when it’s not at that level...there definitely are fans capable of not handwaving away everything negative.

Text: I’ve started sort of tinhatting two celebs.
I believe Things happened in the past, and had a lasting impact on their relationship. But for details, I find most theories too messy.
Much speculation feels like tinhatters seeing what they want to see (like they accuse others of, ha), though I think the too-good-to-be-true “evidence” could have been cases of the pair hiding in plain sight, and there’s always the off-chance that convenient theories are at least near the truth. It‘s nice when they acknowledge they’ll never have the full story, though.
And some tinhatters’ attitudes. Even some of the ones who wrote things that convinced me. If you believe, why would you do certain things? Unless you dislike both of them. It’s like you just want conversions and don’t care if you’re insensitive. I find some (low-profile) non-tinhat shippers more respectful, even if they don’t have “deeper” reasons for imagining the pair together.
And all that makes me feel protective of the pair as people, WTF.

Text: I’ve always wanted to make art, specifically visual art, but was never committed enough to make anything I could be happy with.
Now, I have a goal: to make fanwork.
All the practice I need to get good enough to honour what I love is daunting, but I’ll start.
But:
If I do get good enough for fanart, I might not actually make it. I’d be scared people IRL would see me making it. Not because I want to draw NSFW stuff or anything, I just don’t present as that kind of fan IRL. And I don’t have a tablet.

Er... are you sure this is Horrible Histories?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be avoiding this thread for fear of AOU spoilers. But very hypocritical is they are doing os.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Why did you assume CIA agents are evil? I'm sure there are bad CIA agents, we know there are, but any system is bound to have corruption within it.

I'm glad you found a reason to stay alive, OP. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Just about everyone on that show has more charisma than Nick, tbh. Nick is everything I thought I was attracted to in a man, but he's just not terribly interesting. Renard is especially excellent.

Aw, that sucks. Personally I love how they didn't chose to have him do the sexy cry and there's all kinds of stuff running down his face in that episode, but I get why that would harsh your squee. It's just not the aesthetic/trope you prefer, no shame in that. :) (Maybe try the books and imagine Ioan crying prettily instead?)

As a general rule, making a statement that assumes something as its premise which many people would disagree with (for instance, all CIA agents are bad people) is a really awesome way to start arguments.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, I just heard about her being with Bruce. Were there already MCU fans bitching about it a week ago?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahahahahhahhahahahahahahhaa.

Oh. You weren't joking?

Try googling their history. Or "School of the Americas."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
lmfao

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They're neither? Most of them are paper pushing office dwellers.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a great reason! I hope you'll be able to stick with your new hobby. :)

Is there a reason why you can't do the actual fanart at home/in private and only take your non-fandom practice pieces traveling with you?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So your argument is that everyone affiliated with an institution that has done evil things is thereby evil?

I've been listening to a lot of '60s British Invasion bands lately, and I've come to believe that the Beatles' astronomical success was simply due to luck. There were a LOT of talented bands at the time; the Beatles were just one of many.

(I'm currently obsessed the with Searchers, the Sorrows, and Peter and Gordon, myself. And don't even get me started on the Kinks.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
All your secret is saying to me is, "Here, huge Beatles fan - listen to this great group you've never heard of!" So thank you.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the movie, but I think it was suggested in one of the trailers? I know people have been freaking out over the implications since then, anyway.
