Why did you assume CIA agents are evil? I'm sure there are bad CIA agents, we know there are, but any system is bound to have corruption within it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
As a general rule, making a statement that assumes something as its premise which many people would disagree with (for instance, all CIA agents are bad people) is a really awesome way to start arguments.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahahahahhahhahahahahahahhaa.

Oh. You weren't joking?

Try googling their history. Or "School of the Americas."

It's political.

Always a good strategy to make your own viewpoint seem more righteous if you can call a whole group of the people you perceive as your enemies as evil.

'Republicans are evil, look how good I am for fighting them'
'Democrates are spinless, look how tough and strong I am for standing up to them'
'Gamergaters are all women hating scum, look how good I am for fighting the good fight'
'Antigamergaters are all unethical bullies, look how good I am for fighting the good fight'

Pick a side in any topic. The best way to feel good about that side is for the other side to be bad beyond all reason.

The CIA isn't evil, but it's known for using shitty underhanded tactics in countries they want to obtain US interests, and it's been known to use torture. So.

They're neither? Most of them are paper pushing office dwellers.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This. For every person who actually engages in what most people would consider spy work, there are a few hundred data analysts, admin folks, and other assorted desk jockeys.

slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is going to come across as more dickish then I intend it to be, but are there seriously adults in this world that think of ANYONE as being "pure evil" or "pure good"? I would like to think that, as human beings, we would have more nuance than that.

Re: slightly off-topic

I have friends I'm pretty sure truly believe if you're a Republican, you're bad.

I'd say most adults think that way. It's easier than admitting to themselves they're capable of doing really bad things.

I am thinking evil is quite a strong word to label everyone working for a certain agency. Especially when most are just your average admin person. O-o

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, this secret. I mean you can see the tryhard - negative generalizations, the "pure evil" comment, the condescending olive branch... haha.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a first class troll. Thank you, OP, I'm enjoying the thread above very much.

For anyone miraculously still unaware that the CIA is evil, here's some fucked up shit Clinton quietly apologized for in the 1990s.

TW: torture, including sexual abuse

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The CIA isn't an entity, you know. Groups of people who exerted power within the organizational structure of the CIA were evil. Different thing.

And that's skimming the surface. Look at the recent torture report.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Do you agree or disagree with the secret that people who work for the CIA are, if not evil, deeply damaged and fucked up?

And, have you seen Burn Notice or are you just arguing for the sake of it?

Re: To Anons arguing above

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think some of them are evil, some are deeply damaged and fucked up, and some are so naive I wouldn't trust them with the security of a dime store let alone a country.

I did watch Burn Notice and quite enjoyed it.

Re: To Anons arguing above

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've never met a CIA agent.

However, I did know a military guy who was a spy in Latin America.

He is honestly the person I admire most in the world. Intelligent, stable, moral.

So, no, not deeply damaged or fucked up or evil.

but this show helped me see they are deeply damaged and fucked up
