slightly off-topic

This is going to come across as more dickish then I intend it to be, but are there seriously adults in this world that think of ANYONE as being "pure evil" or "pure good"? I would like to think that, as human beings, we would have more nuance than that.

I have friends I'm pretty sure truly believe if you're a Republican, you're bad.

Well duh.

Countdown to someone posting "If you want to control my body and outlaw abortion, I'm pretty sure you ARE evil" in 3... 2... 1...

That's not even the most evil thing about Republicans.

The trouble is, most Democrats are evil too.

No, but that is the meme that gets used to justify that attitude, I find.

There is a staggering tendency amongst some people to see the world in binary.Pity for them there's more to it than that.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You might see the CIA as more definitely evil if you or your relatives had been tortured by them.

Ditto Republicans, Tories, the Soviet Union, or whomever else.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And the CIA, Republican, Tories, and the Soviet Union have also doubtlessly done good things as well.

Look at the Soviet Union: did somethings that were EVIL AS HELL. But Hitler couldn't have been stopped without them.

There's good and evil in basically everything. Some might lean HEAVILY towards one pole but to describe anything as PURE EVIL seems silly to me.

DA

The Tories really, really haven't. Not in during the last government at least.

Also I'm pretty sure Hitler was pure evil. I'd be happy calling Nazis evil in general, even though I'm sure there were some individuals who were brainwashed or deluded.

I'd disagree that Hitler was pure evil, actually. The man did love his dog. He did many despicable things, but he was still human.

Re: DA

Yes. A human being, who was evil.

Being human doesn't stop someone being evil. I'm not sure a non-human can in fact be evil, it wouldn't make any sense.

Current Tories are Evil with a capital Eve. Which also makes you ill. Especially if you were already ill or disabled, in which case you may as well hang yourself if they get another five years.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And you'd still be incorrect.

Do they have evil practices? Yes. Are there evil people who are a part of the organization? Yes. Is every single person who is in any way affiliated with them evil? No.

Especially when you're talking about an intelligence agency, where information is so incredibly compartmentalized that the vast majority of people working there don't have the first clue what anyone outside of their own particular task group might be doing, let alone how they're doing it.

NAYRT

God forbid people do the briefest of research about an organization like the CIA before joining it.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people probably have. And, being reasonable human beings capable of seeing shades beyond black and white, have decided that it is not, in fact, a vile cult dedicated to sacrificing babies to the Great Old Ones, and that it might be possible to employ one's skills ethically and perhaps even - gasp, shock - make a push for greater accountability.

It's almost as though given the same information, not everyone would draw identical conclusions.

Re: slightly off-topic

It's almost as if some people are so naive they wake up every morning expecting pigs to fly.

Especially if there's a decent enough paycheck involved.

I'd say most adults think that way. It's easier than admitting to themselves they're capable of doing really bad things.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Capable is one thing. Not everyone seeks out the kind of life that provides the opportunities and excuses to do any of them.

Terrorists do of course, and often without the financial motivation.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
The reason terrorists do terrible things without any financial motivation is because they think they're doing something really profoundly good, and that what they're trying to wipe out is evil. Evil enough to exploit them, kill their friends and family, and destroy their homelands. Evil enough that they need to be eliminated, because otherwise, they'll eliminate all the Truly Good People of the world.

Take all of the bad things the original anon is talking about the CIA doing. Modern terrorism is in part a response to that. If what the CIA does is evil, terrorists motivated by what the CIA has done to their people are...fighting against evil. And it's an evil that they see as a very real threat. A lot of the people who are recruited by terrorist groups are young, impressionable, and have seen some serious shit. They want to protect their homes. They think they're supporting a just and righteous cause.

And that's the problem: everyone is the hero of his own story. Everyone thinks he's good, even when he's not.

Re: slightly off-topic

Well quite. So if we can say terrorism is evil or bad or wicked or whatever, we can say the same thing of the CIA.

I've no idea if that was your point or not, as it's nearly 2 am here and I have to go to bed now. Whether this was a troll secret or not, it was certainly an interesting thread.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Well no, the point is that good and evil are usually relative.

I think the only people we can sort of say are evil are people who have no justifications whatsoever for doing the things they do, people who are completely without compassion and empathy. But people who do terrible things while still having compassion and empathy, and have fallen into a mindset where they believe the terrible things they're doing really aren't terrible at all, or are even good, aren't actually evil. That doesn't mean they aren't responsible or shouldn't be held accountable for what they've done, or that what they've done isn't wrong (if we can agree that it's wrong), but they're not mustache-twirling villains.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Ah, but not being able to feel empathy is hardly a choice, isn't it? If someone is born without the ability to feel compassion, or the ability to understand WHY something is right or wrong and commits deplorable actions because of this, would they (or should they) be considered "more evil" or less evil"?

I am thinking evil is quite a strong word to label everyone working for a certain agency. Especially when most are just your average admin person. O-o
