Confession: I always preferred John Rolfe from the shitty sequel.

you are not alone

How is it racist? I mean, I totally understand how it's COMPLETELY historically inaccurate, but it doesn't seem particularly racist.

Unless you mean the "noble savage" trope? Which, I guess the Native Americans were portrayed as more in tune with nature, but I thought they were given a wide range of personalities.

It just doesn't seem particularly prejudiced one way or the other.

The noble savage trope is indeed strong in the movie. Not to mention the "magical savage" trope. Seriously, a grandmother tree? That always makes me wince.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really confused about the 'noble savage' trope in regards to Pocahontas. It's racist because Pocahontas is a hero? Is in tune with nature and learns how to be in tune with people, too? I don't get it. All Disney princesses are Mary Sues to some extent.

I also can't say about the grandmother tree, but aren't tree spirits and such prevalent in Native American folklore? I get what you mean if you're pointing out that the magic only happens on the side of the Natives, but to be fair, the movie is really nature focused, and the white settlers are basically just interested in digging up and destroying it.

*sigh* You don't get it.

"Why is it so bad that black people are portrayed as liking fried chicken and being all spiritual? Isn't fried chicken delicious? Isn't being spiritual nice, and 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' is a beautiful hymn."

DA: No they are not the same and my native ass is going to smack yours for going there.

The tree wasn't so bad. Pocahontas being preachy and sanctimonious as fuck was bad. In the real world that would be a believable flaw she would have to work to get over. In the movie-land it was not presented as a flaw.

Also the Native Americans weren't really great environmentalists.

John Smith was pretty generic. I always thought the minor characters were more believable and interesting.

You are such a Republican.

But yeah, the Indians weren't perfect. That said, the English land use ended up being far less sustainable for various reasons.

So it's understandable that the Indians were romanticized as more Green. To a fair degree, they were, because their ancestors had gotten through their disasters and settled on a sustainable program long before.

I think it's worst crime is taking something that was a true event and erasing it by using some white guy's romatizied version where the invaders weren't that bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. My eleven year old self always loved the movie because INDIANS IN TOTAL SYNCH WITH NATURE PRETTY SONGS PRETTY CARTOON HEROINE WHO GOES EXPLORING OMG

but I couldn't stand John Smith and I hated the love story bit.

Yea, if nothing else this film was visually appealing and "Colors of the Wind" is one of my favorite Disney songs. So pretty. (I didn't personally hate the love story though, but I've always had a soft spot for romance and I didn't give it much thought as a kid.)

KocoumxThomas is the superior pairing tbh.

Pocahontas came out when I was six and I was so obsessed. But for some reason, I loved Thomas and Nahoma (sp? Pocahontas's bff) the best.

Well Thomas is obvious, he is adorable and not Mel Gibson. But Nakoma was like the worst friend.

I don't really get how this movie is racist? As someone said above, historically inaccurate, absolutely, but racist?

Still not an explanation. Explain it in your own words.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, a trope that is problematic in the way that it has helped oppress people and influenceds peoples mindsets toward a certain group/minority is NOT the same as racism. That sort of thing happens ALONG WITH racism, but stereotypical characters existing in a narrative does not make the narrative racist PER SE. Especially not if said narrative goes through a lot of trouble to undermine constructions of difference and accentuate how different cultures may *seem* polar opposites at first glance, but really are just the same essentially, though taking different forms. There's a whole song dedicated to that, 8in the movie.

My sister and I like this movie and still like it. We're not really familiar with American history so we didn't (still don't) see the racism.

Although I could never get over how phoebus and John look similar to my little kid mind.

Text: I hate this story- it’s racist and awful… But I’ve always liked the fictional (Disney) John Smith.

It was hard not to! He was drawn like a 90s stud and given such a sweet personality.
