Background: A passive house diagram.

Text: I don’t understand why I’ve been so passive all my years in fandom. 90% of the time I don’t eagerly participate in things, yeah.

But in fandom, a lot of my usual barriers aren’t there. I don’t have to use my RL identity, or be in all my fandoms under the same name. I’ve always admired, not judged the hell out of, people who hone their skills through fanwork. And I still wouldn’t take on something like being a mod, if I wasn’t sure I could handle it. It seems like the only reason is laziness.

Pic just a search result for “passive”. A passive house, auf Deutsch beschrieben. Eco-friendly.

My contributions to fandom are few, far-between, and of mediocre quality. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a BNF. But then I think about how much I enjoy minding my own business, then go skulking back into the dredges of anonymity.

Nothing wrong with this. Presumably if you really wanted to be more involved, you would be.

Yea...do you (OP, of course) even want to be more involved in fandom? You say you admire people who hone their skills through fanwork but you can appreciate others skills without being interested in cultivating your own.

Some people don't possess the skill and some don't have any desire to contribute. Some want to but don't have time. Whatever is okay.

The only way I've 'given back' to fandom has been by commenting and occasionally drawing/writing/posting (which was a long time ago) so I guess my involvement is mostly passive too, but I don't mind. If I knew of a good way to do more I might consider it, but... *shrugs*

I genuinely think commenting here (or making secrets) IS a contribution, because all comments help keep FS going, and I don't like tumblr so this is one of my only fandom corners left.

I agree.

I absolutely agree, which is why I mentioned commenting! If no one made secrets we wouldn't have anything to comment on (I should make more, tbh), and if no one commented...well, the comm would be dead. I love the comm so the more commenters (anon or otherwise) the better.

Outside of commenting I'm pretty passive in fandom, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

For me, part of it is investment. Especially if writing fic.

I dunno. I was very passive (just reading and occasionally commenting on fics) until I started posting on f!s. And for all people complain about tumblr, I find it easier to interact with fandom on there with people who share my interests than I ever did on lj.

It sounds as though you think you should be more active in fandom for some reason, OP? It sounds as though you see that kind of participation as some obligation of membership or something, when it's really not.

Everyone has different levels of investment in things. Far more people just lurk and dabble than are visibly active in creating fanwork; I can think of several fandoms I've been in personally where I have no interest at all in making anything, and others where I have no interest in consuming anything because I'm much more invested in creating.

The lack of desire to create isn't about laziness, it's just about that certain thing not pushing my buttons in a way that facilitates it. Some things just won't get me that deeply enthused, but I still consider myself part of the fandom and will follow the fanworks that are created for it. I just don't feel the drive to make some myself.

It's not a monolith where one rule applies to everyone, all the time. As long as you're having fun, then there's no "right" way to do fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But lurking is fun. Why turn fandom into a chore by pushing yourself to do more than you want to?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
We all have different levels of involvement in different things. Nothing wrong with having your own way of enjoying fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to love churning out fic nonstop for fandom, but then I just got tired of it. Now I'm content with just discussing some fandom stuff with a few people and maybe writing a fic every once in a while. Nothing wrong with what you're doing, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to have a reason to want to participate, whether it's fic-writing, modding, whatever.

I used to write and mod quite a lot in my small fandom. It was a lot of fun.

However, it was a small closed fandom, and as time went on, the fandom composition changed. The focus became exclusively on the juggernaut pairing (95% fluff and hurt/comfort)- right around the time I completely burnt out on the juggernaut and became far more interested in rarepairs, gen and plotty stuff.

So I moved on. No hurt feelings, but it didn't make sense to keep modding someone else's party. I still have super-fond memories of the fandom, though, and every so often I go back and lurk to see if the focus has widened again.

Enh, we're really passive in fandom. This is pretty much our sole fandom activity. All my creative energy goes elsewhere, so I just appreciate the folks who put their work into it!
