Yeah, the entire story of angua wasn't proof enough for some people?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
the story of angua has some shitty undertones I'll admit, but I'm not sure it's enough to draw the conclusion of "sexist piece of shit"

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What about the entire cast of female characters in Unseen academicals?

The fact that Dora Bell Dearheart was literally just the prize for Moist to win at the end?

Every plotpoint involving the seamstresses?

The fact that Monstrous regiment has a FUCKING rape in the backstory?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Rape is ~~*~realism~~*~

(except we never include male rape in our fantasy series but shhh)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
One possible rape in what, forty books? Wow, how awful. Especially when the book in question is about war. Someone's really trying to get offended.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So just one little rape is OK? Fuck. you.

I can't believe someone actually thinks that depicting rape in fiction is inherently bad

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
da

It becomes a problem when it's used in fantasy against main female characters for shock value and an excuse to feel sorry and protective for the female. Notice how even in times of war, imprisonment and oppression, it never happens to men.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a problem, but I think it's a little extreme to go from critiquing that to, "no characters can ever be raped, and if one is, then an author's entire body of work must be tossed out."

Never? Because I can think of several examples just off the top of my head. Outlander probably being the best known. Deliverance is infamous for that m/m rape scene. There are multiple examples of men being victims of rape or threatened with rape in the Dark Tower series. Men do get raped in fiction.

So it's never, ever okay to mention rape in fiction?

Where in the book does Pratchett say the rape is ok? The Disc is a mirror of worlds and the books are explorations and subversions of existing tropes. Rape is sadly something that happens in the real world and that is part of the background of the themes that the book is exploring. That's not the same as having a fantasy world where female characters have very little agency other than to be used and abused by men and where there is no larger point to be made than 'people in the past raped women all the time' (like in say Game of Thrones or Outlander).

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Monstrous Regiment has like 15 female characters, all the main characters are women, they do just about everything significant in the story, and you're going to throw that all out because one of them had a rape in their backstory?

And as regards the seamstresses - I'm not sure what you can really say is bad there, besides the fact that they're prostitutes. They're good characters - some of the most consistently respected in the text, and I would say one of the only civic leaders who's presented as being consistently decent in the text - who happen to be prostitutes. I'm not sure it's really a bad thing to have characters who are intelligent, and respected, and prostitutes.

And I don't really remember Unseen Academicals well enough to talk about it, or the actual plot of Making Money, so I can't say. But I still maintain this is pretty flimsy evidence for "sexist piece of shit".

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sin City and the like have female main characters too. Doesn't make Frank Miller and other comic dudebro writers any less sexist.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
are you fucking serious rn

Isn't the rape/sexual assault rape for women 1 in 5? So statistically, 3 of the characters you mention should have a rape/sexual assault in their background. They're actually under-representing it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's not how statistics work. It's completely possible for a large group of women in one area to have never been raped, because statistics like that apply to the whole population. You can have areas where lots of women get raped and areas where very few women get raped, but because both groups are part of the same total population, the stats still come out to "1 in 5."

Also, it's a fantasy world. American stats don't apply to it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fantasy world where women have to dress as men in order to join the army, because they still don't have many career options beyond wife, seamstress (ha), witch or servant. The country in question has also been in the midst of a war for a long time. The fantasy world statistics would very likely be even worse than "1 in 5".

Ayrt

Well, that's fair.

Cool story bro.

(Seriously though, your assumption that people don't know the basic ways in which research is done and statistics collected is kind of hilarious.)

So you're back to being a patronizing asshole to completely fair and reasonable comments just because they put forth arguments you can't actually refute, huh?

Wow, your attempt at being a decent human being didn't last long, did it?

I wonder if some people in these threads think he's making up the ideas in the first place rather than taking existing tropes and subverting them. Because there's little to condemn the seamstresses in the books other than the fact that they're euphemistically referred to as such. If you have a complaint about their existence in the first place on the other hand, don't read a book that's satirising sexist fantasy literature.

??? I was actually really pleased about Angua's story as a teen, specifically because of her gender. And about Sybil's. I'm not trying to claim that Pterry is some sort of feminist icon, but I think most of his depictions of female characters are fair and well-balanced.
