Two gunmen were shot dead by police on Sunday night after opening fire on a “draw the prophet Muhammad” contest in Garland, north-east of Dallas, Texas

One school security officer was lightly injured in the attack and taken to hospital for treatment, but heavy security around the event meant that the attackers were unable to get inside the venue.
Just minutes before the attack took place, an Twitter account with the username “Shariah is Light” posted a message saying “may Allah accept us as mujahideen” and ending “#texasattack”. The account was suspended soon after.

Police evacuated attendees, including the guest of honour, Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders, from the event at the Curtis Cullwell Center after the two gunmen were killed, amid fears the attackers may have brought a bomb.

The bodies of the attackers, whose identities have not been released, lay in the street for several hours after while bomb squad officers searched the area.

Islamic State-linked Twitter accounts posted in support of the attackers after the attack.

Couldn't the cops have shot the idiots after they'd carried out the attack on the other idiots. Then we'd have a lot less assholes in the world on both sides?

Fuck off. The organizers were needlessly antagonistic assholes who were all but encouraging some asshole with a gun to turn up so they could get martyr-press coverage. I don't have to like what they were doing any more than the assholes with the guns. I wish both groups would be removed from the genepool. If you were in that convention, then I hope you'd been killed too.

Wait for Tumblr to ignore this because the article calls them gunmen and not terrorists, therefore nothing is problematic about it.

The convention was begging for an attack, the cops should have obliged them and arrested the attackers afterwards. Freedom of speech should come with freedom to take the consequences.

What the fuck kind of understanding of law and justice and right do you have where you can sustain this kind of view

The consequences here were against the law. Violence is not a form of fucking protected speech. It's fucking idiotic, not to mention the bizareness of the motives that lead you to neglect this incredibly basic point. God I don't understand how this argument has any currency whatsoever on the Internet.

Unless you're literally an anarchist, your position is radically untenable.

When a bunch of people go out of their way to provoke violence, I have no problem waiting to arrest the people who they were provoking until they've finished. The people who resorted to violence go to jail or to the grave, and the people who provoked it get a lesson in thinking through what provoking violence actually means. Win-win.

Does the same thing go for the congresswoman who got shot some years ago? Or MLK for that matter? Maybe they should have just shut up, because there were people out there who didn't like their political opinions.

You don't get to shoot anyone just because they say or draw something you don't like.

If a couple of fundie Christians had gunned down a Gay parade, I doubt you'd be saying they were "begging for an attack".

Homosexuality IS against christianity, after all, as much as drawing Mohammed is against islam.

This is why I like the other two major religions better. You never see someone murdered for drawing Christ or God or whatever other religious figure these days.

I know I should regret the loss of human life, but xenophobic assholes versus fundamentalist nutjobs seems like a pass-the-popcorn situation. It's like when the Westboro Baptist Church trades potshots with the Klan--the one that hasn't murdered innocent people is almost more hateable than the one that has.

Edit: and before anyone gets pissed at me, look up the organizers, Stop Islamization of America. Do you really want to spend any time or effort defending these people?

I think they're really shitty people.

I don't think they should be murdered, and I'm willing to defend that position. And I think that's a stronger, more significant moral line than the one about not being a xenophobic asshole.

I think instead of defending their right to say offensive things. We should instead invest our time and energy defending their much less invoked right to shut the fuck up and not be morons. I'll defend their right to not be assholes any day of the week. They need to start exercizing it more tho.

But they didn't actually get murdered. Their attackers died instead. (They were apparently both shot by the same cop, and I hope he gets praised for this--from the sounds of it, he did his job well.)

This is why Texas needs to make another attempt at seceding. It is just in a competition with Florida to see who has the most crazy.

Thank god nobody shot Geert Wilders. We already had two dead right wing politicians/public figures and I really would like this one to just slowly drift into irrelevance for once.
