I didn't consider the monster silly? Especially considering what he represented. But I do love how it shifted from "Oh my god, what is wrong with this kid" to "Oh my god, what is wrong with this woman".

So decent film? I got an email from Amazon recommending it because of Essie Davis.

I really enjoyed it.

I liked the monster too, as well as the ending, but I found that it kind of definitely deflated the horror for me. On the other hand, it was satisfying. I don't expect to come out of a horror with something to think about or even consider a rewatch for tells (it doesn't hinge on surprises or twists imo), so it was different in a good way.

I think they shouldn't have billed is so much as a horror movie. There is horror, but it is more of a psychological thriller.

There were a couple of parts in the second half that really creeped me out (the TV scene...), but overall it was more emotional than scary to me.

I know what you mean, OP. I saw Babadook a few weeks ago and kept glancing out of the corner of my eye to see how my mother was reacting. I was a bit... Difficult as a child growing up, and after my 'grumpy emo teen' phase, I mellowed out a lot, but I still feel so incredibly guilty about how hard it must have been for her raising me.

Of course, if I tried to apologize to her, she would probably say that it's okay, that it's part of being a parent, but still.

God this movie sucked so much.

I literally have no idea why it was regarded so highly when it doesn't even have the decency to be scary.

This entire thread is full of people telling you why, you sad, sad little person.

I agree, it's overrated. I didn't think it was terrible but it looked and felt really cheap and I thought the acting was poor.

That monster was really scary to me

But only because of the sound. I don't do weird guttural noises. I have no idea what it looked liked because I had to close my eyes and ears.

Sort of OT, but can someone clarify the 'reality shifting' part?

I'm very tempted to watch this, and I'm fine with the horror/creepiness/jump-scares etc, but because depersonalization/feelings of unreality make up a big part of my anxiety disorder I'm thinking this may not be the movie for me.

Y/N?

Not to give too much away... how do you feel about the idea of possession? A person slowly losing herself to a dark, unknown force?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Thanks for replying! That probably wouldn't affect me too badly; I'm worse with things where the characters are basically being gaslighted and deeply questioning their perceptions of reality etc. Possession as a concept is far enough removed as to be low on that scale. That a lot of it (I think? From what I've seen of trailers) revolves around a kid makes it one step removed from me also, that that should help also.

spoilerish here: since the whole movie follows the perspective of the mother, who's losing her grip, it may still be pretty difficult imo. There are moments where she thinks everything is normal but she sees things that aren't there (cockroaches) and it affects her strongly, or when she thinks she's doing something but then realizes she's dreaming. I'm not usually skeeved out by that kind of thing but Babadook really unnerved me because of that.

What the heck is this movie about?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
The terrifying powerlessness of raising a child so awful that you gradually come to realize you don't love your own son. In fact, you kind of hate him. In fact, maybe everyone would be happier if you just murdered him. In fact... wait, are we 100% sure the kid is the problem here?

Oh man, our roomie has been saying we ought to see this movie. This comment makes me want to see it MORE.

The protagonist is a widow and single mother whose life seems to have been in a downward spiral ever since her husband died. Things get even worse when her son is finally kicked out of school due to behavioral problems and a creepy book appears in their home, causing his behavior to worsen as he becomes more and more convinced that the two of them are being tormented by an entity known as The Babadook.

Text: S1: After I watched half of The Babadook, I called my mother and apologized for all the stress and frustration of raising me.

S2: I was too scared to watch the second half. I know people said the monster was stilly, and I kind of agree, but all the stuff was reality shifting and not sure what was real creeped me the hell out.

Maybe it shouldn't have been billed as a creature horror flick so much, because I found the movie unsettling for many reasons that had little to do with the, well, creature. It Follows is the same; I wasn't scared in the least, but was constantly looking over my shoulder after watching it.
