At least they're consistent. Everytime DC releases something I gotta figure out what universe it is in, whether is it connected to a movie or a tv show on another network.

Like Supergirl, is that connected to ANYTHING else in DC? Or is Gotham connected to the movies or other shows/

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC there's basically two TV/movie 'verses: There's the CW-verse (Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow) and there's the Supes/Bats-verse (the Superman movies, the new Batman movies, Supergirl). And they're totally separate.

And the DCAU I guess.

And then, I guess, there's also all of the movies and TV series that don't fit into any of those verses. But for live action things that are being released right now I'm pretty sure that they're all either in the Superman vs Batman continuity, or the Arrow continuity.

I kind of like that not everything's connected and can be vague about it.

I hate feeling like I'm missing out on the in-joke if I haven't seen everything single thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of feel the same, I love that the universe is connected and all but I'm hitting the over saturation point with it. I was relieved that they decided to drop the Shield spin off because I felt like we really didn't need ANOTHER show.

I'm also a bitter X-men stan that hates that the universe weirdly has no mutants.

Tell Fox to stop making shitty movies so Marvel can get it back! OooooooooOOOooonnnnnneeeeee DDDDDaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAaYYYYYYYY

I'm also bitter about the no mutants :(.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree?

I still love MCU, but it's starting to feel like it's too much.

I haven't even feel like watching Daredevil yet and to think there'll be like... 3 other series without counting second seasons? And movies planed up to 2019? I feel tired of just thinking about it.

Me too anon. I love this universe so much but I'm starting to feel like my head is burning with all the extra side projects/etc. People tell me Daredevil is good and I do want to watch it but I can't bring myself to do it just yet.

I guess it doesn't help that the first time I watched AoU I came out with an "is that it?" sort of feeling. I had hyped myself up way too much.

I suppose there was going to come a point where a shared cinematic universe was going to stumble into the same pitfalls as the comics. I'm half expecting everything to blow up and start over after the Infinity War films and Inhumans. I know they've said they'll just keep going and recast aging actors but sometimes I think the sheer volume of stuff will be against them there.

I think I'm more excited for the TV shows than most the movies at this point. (Excluding Guardians of the galaxy.) I wasn't so sure about them either, but I'll give them a shot. Sometimes fresh blood is nice, and though I understand the Marvel universe is massive and can see how some might feel it is getting overcrowded (That's what I worry about with Civil War, despite the fact that the very nature of the story means you need lots of characters) it kind of depends on the content for me. I just finished Daredevil last night and ADORED it. If the other Netflix series turn out as good as that one, I'll be ecstatic.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I feel like it's going to burn itself out soon.
I've stopped caring about it already. Maybe if they made their universe more fun, and did actual character development. I don't know.
The only Marvel movie I'm interested in now is X-Men Apocalypse.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Netflix's Daredevil in its own universe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's in the MCU. The big "incident" they keep referring to that destroyed New York is the battle from the first Avengers movie. Plus they've made references to Thor, Iron Man, and Hulk.

But I mean... do you have to watch all of it? At the end of the day the films are the most important properties and you don't even have to watch all of those, really. I don't care about the television side of it at all and choose to ignore it, and I haven't found that choice to be an impediment to enjoying the movies in any way.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Ha, yeah it's getting pretty huge which is a little overwhelming, but I also kind of like the TV stuff because it's gives the opportunity to maybe see some heroes I otherwise wouldn't in the movies.

Kinda agree. First few times were a novelty but now it's moved too far into "you have to watch this other movie not directly in line to understand this crucial detail" and that's kinda why I ended up stop read some comic series - because the next issue will tell me that to understand most recent events if have to go buy some 5 issues from a series I dont care about and it drive me up the wall.

And made my bookshelf look ugly /flounced out of comics

It really has exploded, but I just love that there's so much of it that I can pick and choose and I don't have to feel that sitcoms and romcoms are "the norm" any more and my interests are just these deviant concepts that I'm lucky to get one of every season. Yay for overwhelming me with fantastical media.

Just like with the comics, it can be overwhelming if you let yourself feel pressured to keep up with everything. But you don't have to. Just watch/read what you feel like.

I haven't watched a single episode of Agents of SHIELD, for example. And several one-shots. And Agent Carter, but I plan to watch that one.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. They're over saturating everything to the point of apathy now.

I'm not a huge Marvel fan but I've enjoyed the movies as my summer fun go-tos. That being said...yeah. They're being pretty darn ambitious and listening to everything they're planning to do is overwhelming. So my plan is to just watch the ones that catch my attention, and so far that's worked out pretty well.

I just saw Age of Ultron, and my mom asked me if she needed to go watch the first Avengers movie again before we saw AoU, and I was like 'nah, it's a superhero movie, that's probably all you need to know.' Turned out I was right. Which, on the one hand, is nice, but on the other, maybe not if you're someone who's more invested in the MCU? I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-18 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. It's ridiculous. I know the studios do it because they smell money, but I wonder who the hell has time to keep up with all those different series and characters and such. I liked the Avengers movie well enough, but no way am I watching Iron Man & Cpt America & Hulk & Shield & Daredevil & 80 other movies and shows to 'get the full effect' as I've been told I'm supposed to do. Nuts to that. So when the second one came out, I didn't even bother.

I thought about watching The Flash, if only to find out how the hell you can build a story around a dude who can run fast. But lo and behold, it crosses over with Arrow. Which somehow also involves Batman or something. I guess it's different if you really like superheroes, but to me keeping track of all those series & storylines just seems like too much work for too little reward.

This comics reader thinks you are of the weak! Try over 60 years of shifting canons and crossovers and alternate continuities, then we can talk about "too much" and "confusing".

Eh, I guess it's 'cause I read comics so I'm used to it, but I really can't say that the MCU is really that confusing at all. I guess it's gonna get more complicated given time, but with the limitation of the media I don't think it's ever gonna reach the level of clusterfuckness the comics have.
What has killed my interest for the movie side of marvel is that their movie universe's characters are so bland and uninteresting to me (even downright irritating at times)

(then again, these years of mcu had sprouted the amazingness that is Daredevil so I guess I'm gonna be thankful to them forever for that only)
