IN WHAT FUCKING WORLD IS MAD MAX FEMINIST?!? - TW Likley rape discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Saw Mad Max today. I wasn't expecting much in terms of representation of women, and it didn't even meet my low expectations!

Is this where the bar is for feminism? "Oh she has a robot arm, Totally a feminist movie guais!!1!!1"

It is the least feminist movie I've seen since Sucker Punch. I am mad as hell now.

Ugghhh. Next time just make something like this a secret so people can yell about it on the first page.

I dont have photoshop, and I saw the movie today. I don't want to wait 3 weeks to be able to rant about a shitty movie I saw today.

I think The Mary Sue handled it surprisingly well: http://www.themarysue.com/george-miller-feminist-answer-franchise/

"Fury Road is a feminist film because it’s not outright “feminist propaganda.” It uses gender and sex in a utilitarian, matter-of-fact manner, allowing its females to use their womanhood as a weapon against its universe’s established norms, but neither heroizing or demonizing that action. Fury Road radically allows its female characters to enact as much agency as its men. They are allowed to survive by whatever means are available to them."

I want to argue with OP but it's so very very hard to take you seriously after watching the movie.

Re: IN WHAT FUCKING WORLD IS MAD MAX FEMINIST?!? - TW Likley rape discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed it was not a feminist movie. I don't think it was the robot arm that had people thinking it was.

There was a slight egalitarian bent to the fact that the female lead was a dull uninteresting cardboard cut out with no personality other than the stoic hero, just like every single male action hero, but where as usual attempts to make boring generic tough guy hero into a woman, it is always a stunningly beautiful woman without flaws. In this case she had boyish hair, modest clothing, and a missing arm. all superficial flaws, but that's all the male heroes ever have as well. It was good they didn't over sex her. Of course all that good will goes right out the door when you have her surrounded by bikini models actually spraying water at each other playfully.

But yeah, equal opportunities blandness is not feminism. and the fact that the story was about what a horrible place it is for women who are constantly raped, the captured Mad Max has ZERO rape. Or even threats of rape. Nic Holts character in particular shouldn't have even been able to walk by this point in the world.

TL;DR, It was better, but still not good enough.

So - just to be clear here - your argument is that, for it to be feminist, they would have needed to add a bunch of dudes getting raped?

That's the first argument I've heard that has got me to see the feminist argument for the movie. I see it.

[personal profile] mekkio 2015-05-17 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
No, Max wasn't raped. He was just kidnapped, sheared, tattooed and branded like cattle. Then he was being used as a freakin' blood bag. Slowly being bled to death. Having his very own blood being stolen from him. And then being used as a hood ornament, while still being a blood bag. Kidnapped, tortured, being bled to death and being tortured some more. No big whoop, right?

Never mind that Nux and his "brothers" were being brainwashed by the cult of Joe. Convinced to commit kamikaze in the name of their God/Leader. Also, never mind that Joe allowed them to be malnourished to keep them obedient. (Those were goiters Nux and his brothers had. They shouldn't have had them because Joe had plenty of green food and probably iodine to keep them healthy.) But I guess that's nothing too.

I...I don't think it's inherently a feminist movie.

I think people praise it for having good female characters because

- Furiosa is equally competent, if not more competent than Max

- Furiosa and max are actually both responsible adults that respect each other and need each other without being needy-dependent.

- The women all have personal motives, hopes, dreams and personal arcs separate from the hero.

- None of the women are a prize for the protagonist

- While rape is definitely implied to be part of the universe, it's more about human life being a commodity than misogyny, because Max unwillingly used as a blood donor, and War Boys being used as canon fodder shows the bigger picture of lack of agency (that is not just women's issue).

Euh...and I don't think anyone except MRA's claimed it's a feminist movie. The rest of us just think it's a good film with good characters - and some of those happen to be female.

Merp. What you described makes it a feminist movie.

People are going to argue with you here, but I've been disappointed by female characters in movies too recently. Meh.

Not OP, but I'm curious. Which movies?

If that's the least feminist movie you've seen since Sucker Punch you clearly haven't watched a lot of movies in the intervening period.

This whole drama really seems fake, at least some parts do.
And it's interesting that people see Return of Kings as MRA's, considering:

Well, you know, someone disclaiming their membership in a socially proscripted group is not really compelling evidence one way or the other, to me.

I am tired of people calling this movie feminist

[personal profile] mekkio 2015-05-17 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But not for the reasons you stated. But because of the ridiculous current notions of what it means to be a feminist movie. That is, the women characters must be a without flaws hero of the story that doesn't need help from anyone, especially from a man. They have to be Mary Sues. What they can't be is, you know, human.

And that's what I love about this movie. There were so many women characters of every background and they were human. They were messed up. They were insane. They were selfish and selfless. They were brave. They were scared. They were peaceful. They were violent. They were young. They were old. They were damsels in distress. They were knights in shining armor. They were everything and anything.

This is what I want. I want characters of every background. Saints and sinners. They just happen to be women.

On a side note, they have have a 70+ year old actress doing her own stunt riding on a motorcycle. Some people thought it was cruel of Miller to ask someone of her age to do such stunts but the actress was quick to snap that she loved how Miller thought she could handle it. And she had a blast. Because at her age, the entertainment industry is quick to shove her into feeble, frail, grandma knitting in the corner roles. Here she gets to be a gun toting, bike riding bad ass warrior. She loved every second of it. And I love Miller for this. Actresses are tired of being stuck playing the same old love interest or put on housewife or mother stuck at home roles. They want to play action heroes too. If I were an actress, I would have given a vital organ to be in this movie in order to drive a rig and do stunts.

My comment is all spoilers don't expand

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-05-17 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*squints at you* ???????? ????

I'll agree it's not feminist cause it was better than feminist but I'm not sure how you can walk away from 6 women escaping captivity with the phrase WE ARE NOT THINGS who join up with a biker gang of old women and take over the capital and still come to this conclusions.

Ergo you're really stupid or a troll.

But I am pleased to see wank about something i like for once. Will come read it all in detail later

More movie spoilers.

Anon you left? I'll give you some pointers cause I was really raring to go on this. The passion will be gone by my next break.

You peaked too soon. You should have kept the main post vague about your upset then mentioned the arm in reply to someone else. You went for angry outrage way too hard and made it very difficult to take you seriously. Also I think you should do more research into whatever you want to start wank on. A vague secret would have been better as quite a few ppl haven't seen it yet so it could still build steam.

I kinda wonder with above anon - have you seen it? There's quite a lot of scenes you could try to twist as anti-feminist. Ie the breeder women. The war hounds. You could make an argument that it's trashy shallow imitation of feminism and not real feminism. You could argue stereotypes and I think a racism troll could have a real point to wank with!

Oh another starting point for you, because I will eagerly take some good bait: you could name a secret about the box office? Disagree with it and an incorrect figure will bring out both fans and ppl who like arguing. Also, call it an American movie. Or take a dig at Australia or Africa.
