I just don't get it. There are a bunch of people here who are at the lower end of the BMI scale.

HOW DO YOU GET THROUGH THE DAY?

I spend SO much time thinking about food.

And I'm eating enough (I've done the math and I'm at a healthy weight) but CHRIST am I hungry.

Maybe you should stuff yourself with low-cal stuff? Like you can eat a bag of salad, and that's like no calories.

With the amount of calories your digestive system needs to process foods like that, it may be 40% on paper, but closer to about 20% of your actual dietary needs.

No, I did the math.

I ate 1578 calories today

645 grams of green beans at 31 calories per 100 grams is about 200 calories

398 grams of apples at 130 calories per 242 grams is about 214 calories

530 grams of carrots at 35 calories per 85 grams is about 218 calories

add that up and divide by 1578 and you get about 40%.

I calculated 1578 to be the amount of calories to weigh 110 lbs (I'm almost at that level -- I actually weigh a few pounds more and have for several weeks now but it's basically stable) so I KNOW that this is right.

But FUCK ME if I'm not hungry. Jesus H. Christ.

ayrt's point is that certain foods are harder for your body to break down--so your body burns up more calories digesting them--meaning that if you eat a lot of them, you need to raise your calories for the day. Protein takes more energy to process, and the ayrt seems to think fiber-y things do too.

At this point maybe you should raise your calorie limit--even if it's only by 100 calories. If you're still starving all the time, maybe raise it even more. Most people will lose weight even on 1800 calories a day, they just lose it slower. Unless you're very small already you should keep losing weight.

But I weigh what the bmr is telling me I should weigh and I have for weeks so clearly I AM getting enough calories otherwise wouldn't I be losing weight?

Have you considered that maybe this isn't your ideal weight? I mean if your so hungry you are waking up maybe it's time to eat a littel more and weigh like, 120 and just say "fuck it, that's good enough"

Yes, like I said, 40% on paper.

Highly fibrous foods use up a significant amount of their calorie content just in their digestion. No food is ever calorie-negative like some people suggest, but a lot of fruit and vegetables, especially eaten raw, do not give you the full net 'written on the label' calorie gain.

So of those 200 calories for the green beans, factoring in the energy your body burns simply to digest them, you might be getting a net gain of about 100-150 calories, the rest are used up for processing the food into the necessary nutrients in the first place.

But I've done the BMR calculation and it says that 1578 calories a day would give me a weight of 110. I weigh 115. I have for weeks. So clearly I AM getting those calories. Otherwise, why am not losing weight if it's a calorie deficit?

Then like I said, go and see a doctor. Give them all this information, let them decide where to proceed.

I really hope you're using more than BMI for this. Depending on your bone density and maybe other factors (I have high bone density for example) you could be going under your ideal weight. My current weight has me at "very overweight, nearly obese" on the BMI when it's actually more like "somewhat overweight". I don't even look overweight at all, at a glance.

The "calorie negative" calculation on some foods like celery assumes you are going to be growing it yourself. That you are going to dig over the soil, prepare the patch, plant the seeds, earth up to blanche, water it appropriately using manual irrigation methods, harvest, prepare, and cook it yourself, and eat only that specific food having gone through all the steps each time. That is how the "superfoods" brigade get to calorie negative foods.

Anon, if you're only 115 pounds you do not need to diet. I weigh more than you and I'm an actual stick.

This level of obsession with food and calories isn't healthy. You sound like you have an eating disorder and you're making yourself ill. You also sound anaemic, I had similar symptoms before I was diagnosed. Please, please, please talk to a doctor about this.

Well, I did notice that you have no carbs on your list. Maybe you could cut out whole milk and switch to 2% or skim, and have some pasta or rice in its place?

Your body knows the difference between filler and actual calories. You cannot fool it.

I eat until I'm 80% full, then I stop. But I always think carefully about what I'm eating whether or not I should eat it.

Protein helps you feel fuller longer, but I find that I also need carbs to feel properly satiated. It's a matter of eating food that's going to fulfill a nutrient requirement and also provide a certain base calories and enjoyment at the same time.

It took me a long time to hit upon the foods I currently consume, but it's been a worthwhile journey.
