Things you keep watching long after you stopped enjoying them

(Anonymous) 2015-05-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Or worse: Long after you've started to resent/dislike them?

And why do you keep watching?

If we include reading, El Goonish Shive. It's just gotten so boring. I can't follow the plot and I don't care about the characters. I really only keep reading it out of habit.

I sort of watch Supernatural. I am only doing it because a friend of mine is still really into it. And he doesn't know I hate it and don't watch all that often. I watch just enough to keep up to date and so I know enough info to chat about it with him.

For me it's the Mark Watches videos. I'm tired of the way he waves his fingers at the viewers before starting. I'm tired of the way he shrinks away whenever there's violence or gives the finger-waggle of disappointment whenever he thinks something is -ist, and most of all, I'm tired of listening to him talk about how HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND!!!! during all the scenes that explain what he doesn't understand.

But I watch anyway, because I don't have friends, and it's the closest thing I have to watching things with people and pretending like I do.

Come to stream?

House shark jumped or whatever you want to call it but I kept watching it right up to the end because I want to fuck Hugh Laurie about 72 million times.

I did this with both SPN and House, on the pretense that I had made it this far so I might as well see the end.

For both of them I stopped long before I ever actually did see the final episode, just because of how awful they both got.

Law and Order SVU.

Maybe not an ideal fit, I never really 'Enjoyed' it. I hate watch it.

I don't usually do this but I did keep watching Dexter longer than I would have otherwise because I had a crush on Debra. But eventually even she couldn't overcome my apathy for the show.

I'm like this with Star Wars Rebels r/n. I'll keep watching in the hope that maybe the show will get better in S2, but despite what's been said so far, I'm still kinda not holding my breath (and I fully suspect Rebels is kill after Force Awakens makes a gorillion at the B/O and Disney wants to make a new series set in that time frame, so what's the point of totally dropping it now? Ahaha).

At this point, I'll still be watching the show once it hits S2, b/c I want the show to focus on characters who aren't Ezra and/or Kanan for once. Like I said a while back, Zeb and Sabine might as well be non-entities, so I'd like to see some actual development/growth for them, instead of being tethered to Ezra all the damn time.

Agents of Shield. I kept on watching even after it was clear it had no potential. Although to be fair that was the first five minutes of the first episode. I made it through three episodes before giving up. Every so often I'll see someone saying "but now it is getting good" and try an episode. And then I will lament the loss of an hour of my life, because it has never gotten good, it has just gotten a different flavor of awful.

Nothing.

There's no point in wasting time like that when I can watch something I like instead, so the moment I stop enjoying something, I drop it.

I've grown to hate Arrow but I still watch it because I just keep desperately hoping that it'll get better. There are so many awesome characters on the show (Laurel, Diggle, Nyssa, Thea's gotten so much better, Felicity used to be great until season three) but it just keeps getting worse and worse. Not sure I will tune in to season four.

Daytime soaps, but mostly Bold and the Beautiful (Young and the Restless has managed to stay tolerable). The way they're handling the whole storyline with Maya is offensive as hell, even for a soap. I only still watch it because my mother refuses to realize it's turned into a pile of transphobic garbage, and she helps me babysit my nephew while my brother and sister-in-law are at work.

If you include books too, I keep reading Anita Blake long after I've stopped liking it entirely for the train wreck factor. I'm waiting on Anita to break down and fuck either Olaf (now that he's a werelion) or Edward (even though he's human) so I can never have to read another one again.

MLP. I think some of the new writers are horrible and I'm sick of my favorite character losing all of her development and being made into a joke. But I still think the music is cute and it's otherwise such a happy show. I don't find it very fun anymore, but I'm not following many shows at the moment so I just think "why not."

Once Upon a Time.

I watched the first four episodes when it first started airing in 2011 and really enjoyed them, but got busy and lost interest.

Last summer, I bingewatched the first two seasons on Netflix and found that 99% of the characters are one note and unlikable. I gave it up for a while, but I keep telling myself I'll get back to it, even though I'm hatewatching it.

As for why? I like Scott Michael Foster and I think he was a good choice for Kristoff, if we're basing that off Kristoff's characterization in the movie. I'm interested to see the development of Captain Swan that so many of my mutuals are always harping on about. Colin O'Donoghue is really gorgeous. And ultimately, I guess just because there's a part of me that thinks if I just watch enough of it, I'll finally understand why some people genuinely enjoy it and are invested in these awful characters, like there's something I've missed so far.

Also, I have a good friend who hate watches it, and it's always fun to talk about it with her.

Glee.

I actually liked it enough for the first three seasons, though my excitement for it steadily declined through them. Then from about the fourth season on I started to really dislike it and that dislike just grew.

I still watched it till the end though, for whatever reason.

White Collar, Supernatural, NCIS, Heroes, The Walking Dead at times... (So many more that I've completely forgotten about)

But I've stopped all but The Walking Dead, and when it last left off I was still enjoying it, just... Not as much as I once did.

If this applies to reading, Kuroshitsuji. I stopped caring about anyone in that manga long ago, but the plot can be pretty interesting, so I stay. I alternate between regretting my decision and not pretty frequently.

I WAS doing that with Big Bang Theory...but I finally gave up.

I SORT OF am doing that with the latest Naruto stuffs? Boruto, I guess? IDK. All I know is I'm cackling at the possibility that Sarada ISN'T Sakura's, much less Sasuke's. But mostly Sakura's, cause that means they haven't SPAWNED yet. Though how can they when he's very "absentee father" like?

(and this is where i fangirl and headcanon that she's banging kakashi when sasuke isn't there)

Does it count if I started liking it again?

I kept watching Downton Abbey long after I stopped liking it in one way, because I still loved the characters so much.

Fortunately, although it certainly never got "better" in the way that season 1 was better than the subsequent seasons, I learned to adore it on an entirely different level, and therefore the "worse" it got in one way the "better" it got in another. I think my train of though was something like this:

Middle of season 2: "man, this sucks. It's just like some ridiculous melodramatic soap opera, only with good acting and high production values,"

Middle of season 3: "wait a minute, this is just like some ridiculous melodramatic soap opera, only with good acting and high production values!!! It is everything awesome about soap operas with none of the bad things about them!! What was I complaining about???"

A webcomic that I refuse to name. OK, like three of them that I hung on and read for a while despite being bored. But one that I finally got really sick of to the point I had to quit.

I looked at it this week, actually. It's still going. It looked like maybe it was OK now, but I'm not keen to get back into it.

I watched both Bones and House at least a season too long.

I'm starting to feel that way about Grey's Anatomy because while I liked the Arizona storyline this season, everything else has been dull and awful.

I watched Supernatural through the awful season 6 and a couple episodes into 7 before I gave up.

I just can't give things up. It is hard for me. It has to get really horrible.

Star Trek: Voyager because I wanted to see every single episode of Star Trek. Sitting through some of those were agonizing.
