I don't think this is an unpopular idea among comics fans.

I have no opinion on this, but I am mesmerized by the amount of metal he's wearing on his left hand.

He has this delusion that he's a magickian/occultist.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He is an occultist. And, to the extent that anyone can fairly be called a magician, he can.

Same. My eyes keep straying his jewelry. I kinda want a closer look at them.

I think, ultimately, what we're going to remember is the bit where he's a writer who made some incredible masterworks, did some extraordinarily original and creative things, and practically redefined the medium. I don't think the relative weakness of some of his later work really changes that fact for me. He is a master and will always be.

this

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And there's no reason why he couldn't write something great again. Just his recent work isn't it.

I think I've only read two things by him (Watchmen and Killing Joke), but I agree that they were fantastic. From that small example I can see why people like him so much.

Even if his recent work is disappointing that doesn't take away from his past work.

(This secret is reminding me that I want to read The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta. I'm familiar with both stories, but haven't read the actual comics.)

I really really do not like Killing Joke at all, and it's 100% because of what it did to Barbara.

As someone who hasn't read a ton of DC's stuff but has some experience with Barbara, I can see why you would feel that way. I thought Killing Joke was well written but obviously what happened to Barbara was fucking brutal and unfair.

The League comics are...not really faithful to the source material, and kind of obnoxious. Don't expect much more than, "clever but cold and indifferent darkfic."
elaminator: (Young Avengers: Billy/Teddy)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-06-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I had heard that V was amazing and League was lots of fun, but "cold and indifferent darkfic" doesn't sound like fun. I would still like to give it a try just to see what it's like, but that doesn't sound promising.

V For Vendetta is legitimately great and has a lot of powerful moments, even if the ultimate conclusions Moore is driving towards are ultimately a little dippy.

LXG is fun, and there's some interesting stuff in there as well.

For me, much of what I've read of Alan Moore (LXG, Watchmen, V for Vendetta), it falls into a category I have regarding certain works called "Good But Gives Me Very Little Pleasure to Read." The writer in me can appreciate the massive scope of what he's doing and the skill and craft involved, but the reader in me is just left cold.

Except regarding Valerie's Letter in V for Vendetta. That gets me every single damn time.

I'd recommend From Hell and (for something lighter) Top Ten.

okay but can we agree that Top 10 was really fucking good though?

You're not alone. I like Watchmen okay, and I like his Swamp Thing run, but The Killing Joke sucks and the guy is a bit of a creep.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
But he's a ~*~WIZARD~*~

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ALAN MOORE

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Alan Moore was the king of the "clever little monkey" and/or "pretentiously literary" schools of comic-book writers. Those who want to prove what clever little monkeys they are; and those who want to prove how highbrow and good with words they are, or something.

But after the success of his (disrespectful) Marvelman revival and his (admittedly very clever) Swamp Thing revamp, he fell into the trap of trying to do more weird revisions of other people's characters, because that's what he was known and praised for. Watchmen grew out of that, as did League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But that meant he was typecasting himself as "mean-spirited re-imagining guy."

I think he came to resent the very crowd he spent all that time playing to, even as he kept trying to go to the same well long after people got tired of, "Alan Moore knocks your childhood into some sewage."

This is both wrong, and anti-intellectual as shit

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
That was "anti-intellectual"?

Look, I like some of his stuff a lot. But he really needs to lay off other writers' characters, because he mostly writes them like he hates them.

I haven't read much of his stuff, obviously Watchmen is fantastic, but when I read Promethea on a recommendation I got really fed up with it, especially when it started like... lecturing me on mysticism... I thought Lost Girls was kind of overrated too.
