I think, ultimately, what we're going to remember is the bit where he's a writer who made some incredible masterworks, did some extraordinarily original and creative things, and practically redefined the medium. I don't think the relative weakness of some of his later work really changes that fact for me. He is a master and will always be.

And there's no reason why he couldn't write something great again. Just his recent work isn't it.

I think I've only read two things by him (Watchmen and Killing Joke), but I agree that they were fantastic. From that small example I can see why people like him so much.

Even if his recent work is disappointing that doesn't take away from his past work.

(This secret is reminding me that I want to read The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta. I'm familiar with both stories, but haven't read the actual comics.)

I really really do not like Killing Joke at all, and it's 100% because of what it did to Barbara.

As someone who hasn't read a ton of DC's stuff but has some experience with Barbara, I can see why you would feel that way. I thought Killing Joke was well written but obviously what happened to Barbara was fucking brutal and unfair.

The League comics are...not really faithful to the source material, and kind of obnoxious. Don't expect much more than, "clever but cold and indifferent darkfic."
elaminator: (Young Avengers: Billy/Teddy)

Hmm, I had heard that V was amazing and League was lots of fun, but "cold and indifferent darkfic" doesn't sound like fun. I would still like to give it a try just to see what it's like, but that doesn't sound promising.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a spoof, yeah? So it's "fun" but in a mean way. Like, "This beloved character from another book was actually raised in a brothel, ha ha, now what do you think of her? Now after that one panel we'll never see her again, but wasn't that funny?"

Mr Hyde is really different from in Stevenson's book, I think, and kind of generic, and I think maybe he eats people? And the main cast end up kind of being played for fools, and in one of the sequels a sort of Harry Potter expy is a bad guy, and it's just...

They put some work into it, but it's sort of a bunch of rude jokes. So, fun? Depends on your sense of humour. It's probably either fun or insulting.

I think twisted retellings can work (If the writing is strong), but if you want a more traditional adaption I understand that.

Having not read it I can't comment on the humor, but depending on how it's carried out I could see it being unnecessarily dark and offensive, or clever and interesting. Don't know which, but I would at least hope the cast is likable... Sounds like you feel he failed that too. :(

Sorry you didn't enjoy it more.

V For Vendetta is legitimately great and has a lot of powerful moments, even if the ultimate conclusions Moore is driving towards are ultimately a little dippy.

LXG is fun, and there's some interesting stuff in there as well.

I have heard nothing but love for V, so while this does not surprise me I am pleased to hear you enjoyed it so much. It sounds like time well spent!

Another anon wasn't such a big fan of LXG so not sure who to trust on that, haha, but obviously opinions vary on these things. I would still like to give it a try.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw that.

I do agree that it's quite dark. But I think it's a fun kind of dark, I guess.

Does it take itself really seriously, or is it semi-relaxed? What about humor?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I would say it's pretty relaxed. Definitely much less serious than, like, Watchmen. And there are... at least moments of humor? it's been a long time since I read it.
elaminator: (The Authority: Jenny Sparks - smoking)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-06-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair!

And as much as I enjoyed Watchmen, I would HOPE it isn't as serious. Not every comic needs to be on that level (of dark and depressing).

Moments of humor is better than none!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
LoEG isn't serious AT ALL. Just dark and rude.
elaminator: (Chuck: Sarah)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-06-06 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. Idk how to feel about it, but we'll see if I ever get around to it.

Thanks, anon!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
For me, much of what I've read of Alan Moore (LXG, Watchmen, V for Vendetta), it falls into a category I have regarding certain works called "Good But Gives Me Very Little Pleasure to Read." The writer in me can appreciate the massive scope of what he's doing and the skill and craft involved, but the reader in me is just left cold.

Except regarding Valerie's Letter in V for Vendetta. That gets me every single damn time.
elaminator: (Saga: Izabel)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-06-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly adored Watchmen, but can see where you're coming from. It is perfectly normal to recognize that there's a certain level of skill involved, but for the stories and characters (and general tone) to not mesh with your tastes.

And I imagine these comics aren't the kind you read when you want a pick-me-up. Watchmen certainly wasn't, and going by what I know from the others...

At least you found something to appreciate out of his work?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'd recommend From Hell and (for something lighter) Top Ten.

I like the sound of something lighter. I've heard little about these but I would love to read them! I'll add them to my list, thanks.
