Write what you know, and unfortunately many teenaged fic writers today know nothing except frothing screaming about SJW issues and think that fanfic has to have some sort of statement in it. It can't just be a fun story with familiar characters, because that isn't serious enough for them.

As a mostly-genficcer, this makes me sad. Don't lose hope, OP! Some of us just like writing adventures without SJW issues thrown in.

I admit I'm kind of curious as to what kind of fics you got, though. I'm sorry you were disappointed.

But no one would ever actually say the things you put in quotes, so I have no idea why you put them there.

that third one is believable
"hdu not like what you got in an exchange"

Yeah ok fair enough, but I think the "Gen SJWs!" was more the point of the secret.

i've never read sjw fic, though i've read some fics with characters saying things I don't think they would.

Is this stuff really more prevalent in gen fic than shipping fic? Seems like shipping fic would be prime places for proselytizing about unusual sexualities.

Shipping fic is all magical healing cock or two adults acting like hurt preteen girls. There is no subtlety in it. It is just an excuse to get to either the fucking or the cuddling; dependent on the flavor of the ship fic.

In my experience, it is somewhat more prevalent in gen than in shippy fic on some kink memes.

I guess it's because this is the non-sexual equivalent of a kink -- kinkmemers just want some issue they feel strongly about to be validated by characters they love regardless of whether it sounds like an afternoon special or not. The same way kinkmemers just want some kink or pairing or sexy scenario of theirs to be fulfilled, and whether that sexy fantasy is in-character or not is besides the point.

Away from kinkmemes? Yeah, I usually see a lot more issue-fic in shippy fic than in gen fic.

Issues preaching does seem to function as a kind of a kink in some fics, although their plots often more shallowly written than straight up kink fics are, ironically. I suppose writers have to have something to drive them onward emotionally.

"So sadly, I have to conclude that Gen fic is now a SJW thing."

You're only 1% right. It is mostly SJW fic -- on kinkmemes. But that's all. It sounds like you just have bad luck or bad fandoms.

Is that the extent of the detail you put into your requests or are you being facetious? If that really is about as specific as you get, that might contribute to you getting fic that doesn't seem tailored to you. The most common complaints I see from authors are about recipients who leave extremely vague or generic requests. Generic requests usually make for crappy presents.

I write Gen fic, and it is definitely not SJW fic - my fic is essentially an 'episode of the week', except it's not on your TV.

However, IME, the vast majority of fanfic is shipping fic of some sort. Maybe for some of those writers, when ship ISN'T the focus of the fic, they just latch onto some fandom issue that's currently percolating, and that's why you're ending up with SJW-fic? Just a guess.

I've reread a Stony a/b/o WIP and when you read the whole thing at once, the SJW agenda is very noticeable. Characters constantly apologizing and educating others on SJ issues. It's a good fic otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Before you give up on gen exchanges entirely, try putting "no issuefic" in your prefs. It'll deter most of the Very Special Message fic - while there's always the chance you'll get a writer who's just that tonedeaf, most people will follow the request, because they really do want to write something you like.

It might not hurt to be a little more specific in your requests, too. If they really are as broad as you example, that's not a whole lot for your writers to go on - you might be getting primarily issuefic because your writers are flailing desperately for a starting point, and your fandoms lend themselves to that being what first comes to mind.

That's too bad, anon. I know the spn_summergen challenge isn't like that, but you *do* need to be a Supernatural fan to enjoy it.
