[Mad Max Fury Road]

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might just make you a bad person. Not for liking a villain, since that's nbd, but claiming he was running things well? Naaah.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I like that he had an old school 80's movie vibe to him. It really took me back. His design was fucking awesome too.

But he was definitely abusing his power in order to manipulate and cow the people toward his whims. He controlled their aggression through promises of salvation in the afterlife and through narcotics, he took the most beautiful women for himself in order to preserve and rid his bloodline of illness. His entire kingdom was one gigantic megalomaniacal dictatorship meant to preserve only the best resources for himself and his kin.

But I can see why you would like him as a villain. You can't have a good ole' explosion filled action movie without a good villain.

I feel bad that I wanted MaxFuriosa to happen, so yeah, I get the whole 'doing it wrong' vibe. Maybe because it fits with the 80's cheese they were going with?

To be more on subject, Joe's mask is awesome.

I don't know if I wanted Max and Furiosa to happen in this particular movie but yeah, I ship it.

I don't see Max getting hooked up with anyone. He is a widower turned hermit. He hasn't shown that he wants to be attached to anyone. (Except maybe the occasion dog and God knows how those relationships end.)

I really liked Joe's design (I liked all the designs in this movie, though.),
but he was running things well?
He kept women prisoner to forcebreed a "perfect" (read: genetically superior) son.

Women who, mind you, repeatedly risked their lives throughout the movie to get away from that system.

Lolno.

Never mind that he used young men and boys as cannon fodder. Everyone forgets that. The War Boys were performing kamikaze all in the name of Joe and he never bat and eyelash. Instead he encouraged them. Commit suicide in the name of me and I'll carry you to Valhalla, myself.

But he wasn't breeding for a genetically superior son. It wasn't Hitler in that way. He was gunning for a non-mutated, cancer riddled son. A healthy one. That's it. A healthy kid. Mad Max's world is suffering from fall out radiation everywhere. That's one of the reasons why things have stopped growing in lands that were once green and lush. Why people like Nux has tumors on his neck. Why the women were holed up in that biodome. They were given clean air, water and food. They were being protected from the elements in the hopes that they would produce healthy babies. (This last part was in the latest issue of the Mad Max comic written by Miller, himself.)

I'm getting tired of the whole FURY ROAD = FEMINISM!!! For this very reason. You can't like who you want to like from the movie because people will look down on you if your favorite character isn't Furiosa. ("What? You don't worship Furiosa? Do you hate women???!!!") Can't we like just what we want to like> And for the record, Splendid was my favorite. Not Furiosa.

And Joe was a good villain. (Loved, loved loved his design.) But I don't agree he was running things well. He was a dictator who had fashioned himself a god. He ruled through fear and blind devotion. That's not how you run things.

[personal profile] nanslice 2015-06-07 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, a feminist consultant was brought on board for this movie so I don't think it's too out of the way to say it has a feminist bend to it.

But Max was my favorite character so secretly I must really hate women, hahaha.

Oh, I loved her too! What an amazing person, to have had the conviction to leave her life of relative comfort and safety for a totally unknown and dangerous future, and the charisma to persuade the others to escape as well and Furiosa to take them. And then the bravery she showed during the movie - just remarkable.

The problem with Furiosa, from a marketing point of view, is the same as the problem with Black Widow from the MCU. In terms of costume they are both fairly dull and are in a world filled with people all of whom have much more flamboyant and memorable costumes. Furiosa has the edge over BW with her mecha-arm, but BW has the edge in being able to pronounce Gasoline correctly.

I was going to give this 2/10 for "running things very well" but people appear to be falling for it.

Aunty Entity, now there was a character who was running things well and had a great outfit and voice.

I thought his design was very well done, and I do like him in the sense that he makes a fantastic villain with the way he ran things. However, I wasn't cheering for him to win in the end. How was he running things well? Locking women up and using them only as breeders and milking them like cows? Manipulating cancer ridden boys/men into thinking they will die in glory so they willingly die for a fake cause? Having more than enough water to give to all the people but refusing to give water to them? Yeah, dude was not running things well.

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-06-07 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww OP you're allowed to have whatever character has your fave character! You find Immortan Joe the most interesting/attractive/appealing/complicated/great design character? That's fine! Not interested in Furiosa in comparison? Also fine, she didn't click with you!

I will have to argue with you on the "running well" bit though.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-06-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My take on it:

Fury Road was a big dumb movie that feels like it read Butler, Tepper, and Miller.

Age of Ultron was a big dumb movie that skimmed Gibson and Sterling in college.
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-06-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, from an evolutionary perspective, he was doing rather well - the whole several offspring with different women, being in control of fertile land, being on top of hierarchy and having an army to defend it.

From his own standpoint - yeah, he was doing rather well.

The problem, of course, was that he treated people as objects and commodities - be it as a brood mare, or a (child) soldier, or a blood bag. And we generally frown upon that in civilized society.
nightscale: Starbolt (Star Trek: Uhura casual)

[personal profile] nightscale 2015-06-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
He wasn't my fave but his design was extremely cool, and distinctive. Actually I think most of the designs were distinctive for a lot of the characters in this tbh, the Warboys being the most similar to each other for obvious cannon fodder reasons ofc, and while the wives started out looking fairly similar(but even then not 100%) costume-wise they all had something different about their appearance by the end which I thought was a neat touch.

He also certainly ran things very well for himself, for others, not so much. :P

But either way you like who you like, that doesn't make you a 'bad x' for doing so.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
he wasn't running things "well" at all

my favorite character was the setting
