I haven't been following this very closely. Do we know if this movie is about the new characters starting their own Ghostbusters franchise or is it a reboot of the original movie?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically a reboot, the originals don't exist in the new film.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And with that information I've just crossed it off my Movies to See list.

Thanks!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
why does that matter

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Ghostbusters is a classic that doesn't need to be rebooted. If it was an expansion of the existing universe, I'd be up for it, especially because the story lends itself to that kind of expansion. However, I have no interest in seeing four characters I really like being wiped out of existence.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
but they're not being wiped out of existence

they're movie characters

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As per the Anon above:

"Basically a reboot, the originals don't exist in the new film."

Let me rephrase-- I have no interest in watching a Ghostbusters film in which the original Ghostbusters don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fine, but I'm still curious as to why.

Is it a situation where a particularly large part of your enjoyment is tied to the relationships and lives of those specific characters? Like, they're just your favs?

Wiped out, but replaced with characters more deserving of existing.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill Murray would probably agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The movie isn't even out yet and you're assuming the new characters are more deserving of existing why? Because they have vaginas? Fuck that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly that. Another film starting all males does not deserve to exist as much as a film giving women a chance to get out of the fucking kitchen.

And frankly, fuck you if you disagree.

Yeah no, Terk from Tarzan doesn't deserve to exist over Bill Murray.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I have zero interest in it. I loved the original Ghostbusters, why would I want to go see a movie that treats them as if they didn't exist?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
because you think it's funny

i mean, i don't know if you think it's funny. if you don't, you probably shouldn't see it.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't, which is why I'm not going to see it. I don't tend to like reboots in general, especially when they make major changes to the characters.

Because you loved the original Ghostbusters, so a version that has the same premise and a different take on the characters might be just as good or even better?

Because a reboot does not destroy/wipe from existence the original?

GTFO here with that "classic, doesn't need a reboot" nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of people have a knee-jerk hatred for reboots! I'm usually that way, but I'm actually excited for Ghostbusters. Partly because I think the gender-swap thing is interesting, partly because I never really cared about the original anyway.

But Chris Hemsworth as the secretary. That makes it worth seeing regardless. Honestly, until I heard that I wasn't sure whether I was going to see this or not and wasn't all that excited.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That anon's talking about of their ass, though. It IS set in the original universe, with the original team still existing. This is the "next generation" of Ghostbusters.

I wish it was gender switches rather than completely new characters (though, it would probably be kind of impossible to recast a Bill Murray character whether it was a guy or not). I heard that some of the script leaked and people thought some of the details sounded...uninspired, but I really hope they're wrong.

Opposite view. I'd rather they go with something completely different if they take the reboot route. Otherwise this traps the actresses into having to be "female version of" instead of whatever actually works for them.

I mean, if we have a Venkmen and an Egon etc that's fine, but now they can be archtypes instead of literally being boxed into rule 63 versions, which is how they'd be judged otherwise.

Actually: Story details are unknown other than the reboot centers on the next generation of Ghostbusters, who happen to be female. Ivan Reitman will produce the action-comedy.

It's the same 'verse, just the future. I haven't seen if any of the original guys will be in it or not, though Dan Akroyd is also involved.
