I don't understand canon shipping At All. What's the point?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship both canon and non-canon.

For me, the appeal of fic with a canon pair is often to put them in new situations.

For example, I really like AU fics where Palpatine found Anakin first and he thus was raised as Darth Vader and then he's married to Padmé how redeems him (TOTAL id fic, I'll admit).

Or for Mai and Zuko, I like to read about canon continuation with them facing the problems of the Fire Nation together.

Stuff like that is a lot of fun.

Okay, that makes a bit of sense. My experience with canon shippers is that they moonlight as canon police, so if you stray off the page even a little bit, they're already aiming the .50 caliber cannon to blow you apart before you even type 'The End'. Frankly, it takes a lot of fun out of fanfic.

Sounds like you are looking for a way to look down on people who like their canon compliant fic there.

nayrt

For me, the appeal of fic with a canon pair is often to put them in new situations.

See, I'm not generally into canon pairings, but you just described exactly what I thought the appeal would be.

Actually, isn't that the appeal of ALL fanfic? To put characters we like (or hate) into situations that we didn't get/are unlikely ever to get in canon? Not so different if you think about it.

IDK, I like the characters and I want to think about and read about them being fluffy and physically intimate and shit

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
people want to be right and lord their rightness over others?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. People ship canon ships because they're assholes. That's exactly right.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
it makes as much sense as any other reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
People ship non-canon ships because they're assholes. That's also right.

You don't stop rooting for your favorite team just cause they start winning.

Have coffee shop AUs taken over so thoroughly that people have forgotten there's plenty to fill into the canon without changing things?

It's fun.

Much like any other fandom activity.

That's like asking why you like the tv shows, movies and books that you like, then?
I can understand canon shipping more than non canon shipping, actually
With canon, you like the couple that exists in the source material and makes you feel something so you want MORE of that you want more of that couple and want to fill the spaces, make a sequel to their story, know what happens in the moments not described and not on screen. Fanfictions for canon couples had always existed, there were ones about Darcy and Elizabeth because even back then, 'fabs' wanted more of the thing they liked. Why you think people make sequels?

With non canon ships or crack ships they often go completely against canon and the characters or you have to change so many things to justify the ship that I wonder if it wouldn't be easier for people to write their own characters and stories. What's the purpose of watching something or reading books if you always end up changing what the author has created?
There are people who automayically ship unconventional couples in everything just for the sake of going against the author and feel like they know their characters better than them.
Honestly , if I were a writer I don't think I'd like people rewriting my stories and characters to the extent I can't recognize them anymore and all my messages and methaphors and the things that might be autobiographical are lost.
If I were a writer I think I'd love it if people got my story and characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
someone has issues

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were a writer, you'd have to get over that pretty quick, because once your piece is out there, you can no longer control how people perceive it or what they think about the world and characters.

Also, wrt non-canon ships, not all non-canon shipping involves completely changing characters. A lot of the time, people ship a non-canon pairing because they like the dynamic between the two characters and see chemistry between them, and they'd like to see them take that further.
