Re: FFVII remake

Last time I talked about this someone called my joyless, but I really am worried about the more socially regressive aspects of the game being kept intact for the sake of appeasing the rabid fans.

Are you referring to the crossdressing? Because there is no chance in hell that they would take that out.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The cross dressing, yes, but also the racism (Barrettes whole character, the racist native american stereotypes later in the game) the homophobia (Gay men will rape you of you pass out in a brothel! Barrette likes to play sailor) the sexism (Yuffie and that blond woman being threatened with rape. That guy who slaps Aeris across the face to shut her up. the violent fridging of one of the few women in the game. Tifa's entire outfit, take your pick. Actually two women get fridged as well, Vincent's ex.)

The nineties was a horribly regressive time, but for some reason people have this whole nostalgia trip about it, and I think they're going to keep the whole thing as it was without updating any of the things that need to not exist.

While I see what you're saying, the stuff you've listed here would basically involve them having to change vast chunks of the game.
I mean retconning Aeris's death?? That's only one of THE most memorable deaths in a Final Fantasy game ever.

Also remember the game is being made by Japan, not the US...

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of this stuff you're really reaching on, Aeris' death is a major plot point that isn't merely a fridging, etc. (Or do you think any female character's death qualifies as fridging whether or not it actually meets the definition?)

But Barret's dialogue is a result of the localization (he doesn't sound like Mr. T in the Japanese release) and that will probably be changed.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Fridging: A female character who is killed to advance a males story arch, to provide angst and character development for a male. Aeris was killed so that could and the presumed male player have a reason to hate Sephiroth and desperately want to stop his plans. Unnecessary female death used to motivate the male character.

The whole group is affected by her death. More to the point, she's not merely discarded after death but continues to play a role in the plot. If it's a fridging, it's a subversion of such.

I think they actually did tone down Barret's Mr. T impersonation, at least, in the PC port that's on Steam r/n. I noticed it wasn't nearly as obvious as it was when I first played the game on PSX.

And def. agreed... Aerith's death wasn't a fridging. Not in the slightest, because like an anon above/below me said, the entire group was affected by it and gave them all motivation to stop Sephiroth (aside from saving the Planet, of course).

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
... I see why people called you joyless

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I don't take joy in the degradation of marginalised people.

There is a problem here, and it isn't me.

That's all well and good but try not making shit up.

Yeah, I can see why your friends called you joyless, because I think you really are reaching for some of these.

Unless you're the type of person who looks for every little thing to be offended by, in which case, hey go for broke and go find a ROM of the Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe to play/watch or something.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they should PC it up a bit, like not calling each other "retard", and make Barret a bit less of a stereotype.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, I had forgotten about that. Plus there's the designated "Cripple fight" between barrette and his former friend.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck? How was that a "cripple fight?!" Because they both had gun arms? Are you fucking kidding me?

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
wtf?
And excuse you, that fight was actually really tragic :/ I liked that storyline.
Cripples? They have fucking gun arns!

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking about the "designated cripple fight" reminded me about the "Designated girl fight", where the woman who had suplexed a tank got in to a slapfight with the badguy airhead.

Ugh. This game needs to change badly.

da

I think everything is reaching except for the stupid slap-fight. that one was actually idiotic and could be discarded, esp because tifa's more of a bruiser type

I'm STILL laughing

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but your posts really do prove that you're joyless. I understand where you're coming from but some of the stuff you're taking issue over are pulled right out of your ass.

Proove it, and stop being so hostile. Are you angry and defensive that I am asking for your favourite media be more inclusive? Do you see why this is something you need to work on?

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even like the fucking game that much!
