No wank please

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Legitimate question: Is trans-racial and trans-abled legit thing?

I mean no judgement, I'm just a bit weirded out.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's bullshit. Just another way for dumbass kids to try to be special snowflakes. It's disgusting.

I really don't think it is, but I also don't really understand the thinking of people who claim otherwise.

However, I feel like it's a far-fetched attempt to understand people who are different. And possibly a psychological issue as well.

Yes, and derisive laughter is the only legitimate response.

Why laugh if it is a legitimate thing?

NAYRT, guessing she misunderstood "legit" for "is this something people actually claim."

Or that's what OP really meant and some of us misunderstood.

Because it is enjoyable to laugh at.

Actual serious answer is that I don't believe in racial dysphoria, but that some of these folk have convinced themselves that they should have been born a racial stereotype. Which I still find literally laughable.

Trans-racial, no idea.

Trans-abled: yes. It's called BIID (Body Integrity Identity Disorder) and it does happen to people. That being said, it probably isn't what Tumblr think it is.

No and no. Next silly question please.

I think trans-racial could only possibly be a thing if you're adopted and your family is a different race than you. I knew someone who was black (light-skinned black, possibly had one white birth parent, but would never be mistaken for white) and adopted by a white family, and said she thought of herself as white until she was well past her teens. But that must have meant she doesn't anymore, so it might be something you grow out of.

+2

In the context of adoption: yes transracial is a thing.

In the context of someone feeling like they're x race, it is not.

If this is about Rachel Dolezal that bitch can go fuck herself.

Transracial and transethnic terms were coined to refer to black/non-white kids with adoptive white parents. That's the ONLY time you should use those terms, and even then you should use caution.
Trans-racial as in "whiteys doing blackface for real" aka Rachel Dolezal is not a legit thing.

"Trans-abled" people have psychological problems, but no, they don't have a right to claim a disability just because they ~feel like they're entitled to claim disabilities~. It's only legit in that it's a psychological condition (my sympathies for that), but no, it's not legit and it's fucking offensive.

What about white kids with adoptive black parents? Because that is a thing, too.

I believe there isn't a proper term for that. You'd have to ask someone who's in that situation tbh

Yes and no. There are actually psychological disorders out there where someone thinks of themselves as something other than who or what they actually are. Some of them are actually very strange like Cotard's Syndrome, where the patient actually believes they are dead. HOWEVER, cases that seem to be popping up since last week? Nope. These are mostly jokes. Making farce of people like Rachel Dolezal, who, in my opinion, is more con than patient.

No. It is not.

Edit: Actually that's too simplistic an answer for this question, but the states those terms embody are not a thing. What is a thing is people having an affinity for an ethnicity that they grew up in despite not being of that ethnicity or people having a mental illness.

Those terms mean nothing, however. They are coded terms for appropriative behaviour that are masquerading as social justice and the people who use them are not legitimate.

I'm 90% positive it was started by a bunch of guys from 4chan wanting to parody tumblr.

Even tumblr SJWs reacted with derision towards "trans-ethnic" and "trans-racial."

It's not a thing, except maybe amongst a very small minority of people with serious issues.

For the love of god NO it is not.

Late to the party, but even if I think "trans-abled" is a silly word, and wanting to be disabled is silly, I wouldn't tell anyone that they weren't disabled because I don't know that person and I don't know their medical history.

I was recently told on a popular support forum that I'm not naming because I don't want to start wank, that because I have "passing privilege" (meaning that you may not be able to tell by looking at me that I am disabled) I should be excluded from accessing support and using things for "real" disabled people in public.

I'd rather people were always given the benefit of the doubt by others than vilified for being a "fake". I've been yelled and cursed at for using the disabled toilets before. When I've used a chair previously I've had people approach me to tell me they "knew I was faking" because they saw my legs move. I have never claimed to be a paraplegic. People can be really thoughtless and revolting when they believe they're in the right.

Transability: there was a doctor in Scotland who performed amputations on people who believed that their offending limb was not part of their body. He said that it was some of the most satisfied patients he had treated.

There was a documentary on the subject called "Whole" about fifteen years ago. I saw it on the Discovery Channel.

Not sure if the condition can't be treated non-surgically, I'm not a psychiatrist.

Short answer, no.
