protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
does anyone here have experience with them or can anyone here recommend any?

i'm googling them but all these articles are about supplements geared for bodybuilding which isn't quite what i'm looking for

I know this may not be what you're looking for, but can you not get proteins naturally through eggs and beans and milk perhaps?

nayrt - Yes, they could. Also legumes and soy, which most healthy vegetarian diets include, which is probably why there's not many protein supplements marketed toward vegetarians.

...and peanut butter, and chickpeas, and dried/split peas, lentils, soybeans, tofu, seitan, soy nuts.

Also milk, and fish...depending what kind of veg we're talking, that is. Most of the protein supplements are either soy or whey (milk), though, if you're avoiding both, you'll really have to load up on other protein sources, OP. Protip: stay away from packaged/processed stuff.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

Well yes, all of those fall under the categories of legumes or soy.

That's some conflicting advice, though. It's tricky finding soybeans, seitan and tofu that aren't packaged/processed. Ditto peanut butter, though some health food places have grind-your-own. Canned chickpeas and beans are just fine, albeit more expensive than dried.

AYRT

I meant more like the "Extra Protein Added!" "High Protein Source" bright labels stuck over boxes of things, or anything that has more than 3 layers of packaging, etc. Basically, I'm saying to avoid junk food that's masquerading as health food. Bulk food stores are your friend, OP.

Natural peanut butter, grind-your-own even, is available most places, I think. Canned chickpeas may have added salt (check to see if the instructions say to rinse after draining), but that depends on whether you're on a low-sodium diet or not, I guess. Though they are regularly $1.99/can where I am. That's store brand, BTW. I do live in a bit of a food desert, but as I said further down the thread, I'm not strict veg, and I eat a lot of country food (e.g. wild meat and game, all the fish), but that's not helpful for OP.

Natural peanut butter that is jarred just like the sweeter, more processed versions is widely available. I want the grind-your-own stuff, that's not nearly as common. Salt in canned beans doesn't bother me. I'm going to add salt and plenty of other seasonings during the cooking process anyway, because otherwise it'll taste like wet cardboard.

Why would you need to supplement protein? Are you not able to eat legumes and nuts and soy (and if you're ovo-lacto, milk, eggs and cheese)?

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
it takes effort for me to meet daily protein needs as is. i am doing it but once in a while i'd like to drink a protein shake or have a protein bar in the morning and not worry about having to fill the daily quota of all that, you know?

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-06-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're constructing your meals properly there shouldn't be too much of a reason to worry about quotas.

I'm not trying to be condescending, but I don't want to assume you're good with your nutrition and then have you go away not knowing how to be healthy. That's a good recipe for getting very sick very quickly. ...Are you aware of how to make complete proteins out of legumes, nuts, and grain combinations?

That said, there are vegan protein bars out there if you're just looking for something to take to work.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
like i said, yes, but it takes effort as in meal planning and purchasing. more so because western cuisine is not something i normally eat and isn't normally stocked in my house by my family and GL being veg when most of what everyone eats around you is chinese i.e. fish and meat errywhere. i am asking for supplements that let me slack off a day or two in planning my daily meals because sometimes we could all use a break.

all that being said, any protein bars you'd rec?

Okay cool, just checking because I wouldn't want to let you go your way only to potentially develop health problems.

I'm in Canada so your results may vary, but I have tried Vegan Proteins +, CLIF bars, VEGA bars, Dale's Raw Protein, Larabar, and Elevate Me!. They are all vegan protein bars, and with the exception of Vegan Proteins + they all taste pretty good.

CLIF, Larabar, and Dale's are probably the most popular and the ones I liked best.

Not all Asian cuisines have ubiquitous meat or meat products. India has plenty of vegetarian friendly cuisine.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
nations whose cuisines are highly influenced by hindu or buddhist religious reasons are exceptions, not the norm

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm aware of that. Noting exceptions to refute the suggestion that "anything asian" has meat products in it is kind of the point.

The breadth of vegetarian cuisine in India is a pretty damn big exception, though.

i suspect you are That Guy that points out americans also do in fact, technically, eat small portions of vegetables sometimes, when someone complains that 'american food' is sugary and comes in oversized portions?

i know very few indian people who are strictly veg and i know a lot of them here, anyway. i also wasn't trying to imply that there is not a single chinese dish without any meat in it, since i was using what i had thought would be quite obvious hyperbole. but i don't think there's a point to arguing about hyperbole to someone who is trying to win technically-correct points, so. coo

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. A lot of American food does tend to come in large portions with a high sugar/fat/salt content, if you're judging by restaurant food. Obviously if you're talking about what people cook at home, it's different.

I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, anon. Suggesting that no Asian cuisine is vegetarian friendly was such a glaring error, it didn't seem like nitpicking on technicalities to me.

DA

I also have a hard time meeting my protein quotas since I developed a soy intolerance, but I'm mostly omnivorous, so I can load up when I really need to, if I can afford it. Do you have anything like meal replacement shakes where you are? Not the Weight Watchers or SlimFast, this stuff is sold in the pharmacy section where I am, and you can get special formulations e.g. high fibre or high protein. Parenteral nutrition, I think that's what you have to ask for. Ensure is the brand I drink, it doesn't taste too bad, though I haven't tried the high protein varieties.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-24 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
i hope i never get hit with a soy intolerance or im fucked :D

ok, not fucked but that would suck majorly. i'm sorry that happened to you :(

i never thought about the meal replacement type option, great idea, i'll have to look into it

Basically, I had a bone infection. Even though I tried to load up on probiotics when I was sick, the industrial-strength antibiotics still did a number on my stomach. Result, I haven't been able to eat soy since, without the same kind of explosive problems/results I normally get from dairy. Let me tell you how much it sucks. I dream of tofu, anon. Toasted soybeans were my go-to snack. I MISS SOY MILK THE MOST. *sobs*

LOL, but seriously, the pharmacist-recommended meal replacement shakes are deffo the way you want to go. Ask for the high-protein variety.

I used to use a whey and soy protein powder a good while back when I needed to put on a bit of weight and at least feel a tad more full after eating. Since I wasn't body building though, just getting a bit of extra daily intake, I'd usually use half or a third of the suggested serving depending on how much protein I wanted, and just mix into a drink or food depending on the flavour. For me, I was aiming for roughly 30g/day, but I would split that between two or three meals.

Re: protein supplements for vegetarians?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
do you recall what the name of it was?

i was thinking the half portions might work. did it work well for you?

Like herpy, I'm in Canada, so product brands can vary depending where you are. I was using Designer Whey, and then switched to a Life Brand soy protein powder. I don't have either on hand atm, so I don't have them handy to say whether the whey one was lacto vegetarian, or if there was any animal by-product in the soy one (in case you have a strict outline for your diet).

It was good for what I needed it for, although I only saw it as a temporary solution until I could make sure I could eat proper meals each day. I was working myself stupid at two jobs, and my food options were either high-protein trash at McDonald's, free but nutritionally worthless day-old breads from the cafe, or whatever I had time to cook + supplements. I think it's fine if it's not completely substituting the amount you need overall, and if you don't mind the monotony that is essentially a protein drink (soy milk + soy powder. wooooo.).
