Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

That's not really DC's schtick. Their comics have been expanding their audience muchly, coming in a range of tones and styles (with actual teen books aimed at teens!) and they're past their "Dan Didio is the intended audience" phase of the first couple years of the New 52.

It's WB and David Goyer's schtick. I think it's important to make that distinction.

I think, historically speaking, if you had to characterize one of the Big 2 as being 'No Fun Allowed', it would have to be DC.

And I don't think that's even a criticism, from a certain point of view that seriousness can be an asset, but I think as a generalization you could be a lot more wrong

I don't actually disagree, though I wouldn't use those specific words. A lot of it has to do with how Marvel and DC approach the medium, I think. Marvel likes their stories to be pretty straightforward and simple -- nothing wrong with that, but it shows how much they cling to the Stan Lee days. (Also a product of how they approach writing scripts.) DC prefers more complex works built around their characters' strengths, though how effective it is depends on the writer's skill. It might also be because of how superheroes are treated in each successive universe -- with Marvel they're distrusted or feared, especially if they're mutants. With DC, they're respected and revered.

I'm reading through Frank Miller's Daredevil run and I'm actually quite struck by how much it reminds me of 80s DC, though he didn't actually work for DC until later. It's actually really good, which I wasn't expecting. In a way, it's like all the really good Batman stories he didn't write.

All I see (and what most people likely see) are the movies. So I base most of my views of DC on that. And well, it is just 2 hours of muted colors and sadness.

Yeah, but I'm telling you that doesn't really reflect the comics, at least not at the moment. There's a distinction to be made, and if the only person making that distinction has to be me then so be it, but I'm never not going to tell people don't mistake the movies for the comics.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-07-11 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, as exclusively a movie watcher, DC will always be the "WE MUST BE DARK AND DEPRESSING" until they release something fun. Maybe Suicide Squad will be fun but I've yet to see the comic-con trailer for that.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, that's WB, not DC.

Not holding out too much hope for Suicide Squad, but hell I may be surprised, given that Assault on Arkham was pretty fun.

They have a big DC logo at the beginning of every movie. Therefore, they are DC to me.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nice, but you're wrong.

It's WB using DC characters. And WB doesn't actually know how to make a superhero movie. That is my entire point.

From your perspective, DC is an full of darkness and light and kittens and balloons.

From MY perspective, DC is full of darkness (both story wise and color wise). That isn't a bad thing necessarily, but to me it can make the movies a chore to watch.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-11 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW THAT!

What I am trying to tell you is that you shouldn't let the movies reflect on the comics because WB and DC have very different approaches to the characters. I don't even consider the movies to be part of DC, nor do I feel they reflect on DC as a whole. I'm not telling you your experience is wrong. I'm just trying to give you some context. But you're just repeating your argument as if I'd never actually said anything and I'm just wasting my time aren't I.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-07-11 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about DC on the comics side. And telling me that DC comics are fun and more complex doesn't effect me (or my opinion) in any way.

So, yes, it is a waste of time to tell me that "No, DC isn't all dark because this portion of DC that you will never see isn't dark."

Also, I enjoy many of DC's movies. The Dark Knight trilogy is amazing. And I expect I will enjoy at least Batman's portion of this movie. Doesn't make them not dark.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

(Anonymous) 2015-07-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
dethtoll, I think what kaijin is trying to get across to you is that the comics DON'T MATTER to many movie watchers. they don't have any exposure to or knowledge of the recent comics.

therefore, their only exposure to "DC", their only knowledge of what DC comics are like, is the association with the films. which are still stuck in the grimdark edginess of the 90s.

i mean, it's fine that you don't consider the movies to be a part of DC (a wise move tbh, that last Superman film was a slog to get through) - but for most everyday people aka. those who don't read comics, the movies ARE synonymous with DC.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
well i'm glad i was correct in my explanation! i wasn't 100% sure because sometimes it just seemed like it was talking about your opinion about the movies - not generalizing to the rest of the audience. maybe that's what dethtoll thought, idk.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-07-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was talking about my opinion and (likely) the opinion of many people who've only seen the movies (like me).

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
they don't have any exposure to or knowledge of the recent comics.

No fucking shit? You're not telling me anything I'm not aware of, I'm saying none of that matters. Not even the comics really matters. All that matters is that DC's movies should not reflect on DC as a whole because WB can't make a superhero movie. That. Is. It. That's all I'm trying to say. I was trying to be fucking HELPFUL and also defend something that matters to me.

All you're doing is saying it's okay to not listen to someone who actually knows what they're talking about and is trying to provide some context so you can keep your precious misconceptions. And it's like, that's fine, but at least TELL me you're not interested in listening so I can spend my time more wisely.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
but kaijin was saying that your context doesn't matter because it doesn't have anything to do with her xontext. you are just droning on about how DC isn't really like what her opinion is. but her opinion is based off something other than yours.
dethtoll: (Default)

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-12 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
It has EVERYTHING to do with her context. Of course she thinks all of DC is grimdark, because she's only ever seen the movies. That is a misconception. I just wanted to correct that misconception like any fan of something would. Is that so fucking wrong?

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

(Anonymous) 2015-07-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Kaijin is correct in saying that the DC movies are grimdark, though.

The question, ultimately, is this: are the DC comics higher or more legitimate or 'realer' in status than the DC movies or the DC animated series? And I think there's reasonable answers on both sides.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

What Dethtoll is trying to say is that the company known as DC Comics doesn't make the films. Warner Brothers produces the films based on DC characters with very minimal involvement from the company itself. They are responsible for the dark tone and should receive the criticisms for that, not DC Comics. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is and always has been a subsidiary of Marvel, so they basically make the films directly.

You said "DC" in your original post, as if you were pinning the darkness of the films on DC the company. Said darkness is not their fault. Saying "they're DC to me" is ignoring that.

Re: BATSUPE TRAILER

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-07-12 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
There are several Marvel movies not in part of Marvel movies. X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spiderman. I still consider them to be "Marvel".

And I'm not even saying the dark tone is bad. But, even if DC still has little input on the WB films (I expect they have some), their logo is still at the beginning of every movie. Thus, for me DC=WB movies.

If only Marvel movies I ever saw was Spiderman and X-Men, I'd base my knowledge of Marvel off of that. As it is, I base my view of Marvel on the movies they produce as well.
