I honestly don't see how making Starling a black woman would've been a huge change. Wasn't the whole idea of being "white trash" indicative of a disadvantaged background and subsequent career struggle? How would that change with a black character? What part of Clarice's pertinent childhood details would be impossible if she were black instead of white?

But yeah, it does sound a little racist if THIS is the detail that bothers you out of all the other significant changes Fuller's made to the series vs. the movies or books.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH it does feel racist that of COURSE thy want a PoC to come from a ~trashy~ background.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's "they"? Nobody here has said anything about wanting a POC character from a "trashy" background.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow, I don't think that was the motivation. Seems more like it was, "let's have a PoC female lead."

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
lol true

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Clarice comes from Southern poverty. A lot of poor people in the South are black. It really doesn't seem like a stretch to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't a character just be the way they are in the books without it being a huge affront to black people?

Like all the people who are legit upset that Peter Parker was a white guy in the new MCU reboot.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any black people in this comment thread who've said they feel it's a huge affront? Or to look at it another way, why does a innocuous mention of making a character black cause people to get defensive about these supposedly affronted black people, who are of course the only people who'd want to see a black character?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This thread? No. In similar situations? Yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it not strike you as a little weird to be in a discussion with one group and then to suddenly bring up the remarks of a completely separate group while acting like you're still debating the remarks made by the first group?

That's impressive.

Off topic, but...

...face palm Picard FTW!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't seem like any black people around here are getting mad at the idea of a white character staying white, nonny. In fact, it seems like white people are getting mad at the idea of a white character possibly being black.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Again. With similar situations.

Look at how many people were outraged that another white guy is playing Spider-Man. Or that a white guy was cast as Dr. Who again. Etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Weirdly, though, that was almost entirely white people that were pissed off about it. In both cases.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
this

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I can only truly speak for myself but a lot of black people have felt uncomfortable with black actors being cast in white roles in these movies. Do we want to see more black characters on screen? HELL YES. But we want to see characters that were already black. Sometimes a racebend works out but, as fans, we still want things to stay close to canon without someone coming in and turning The Beloved Classic into fan fiction.

That said, Michael B Jordan as Johnny Storm is the only thing the new Fantastic Four movie got right.

No, people were hoping that we might get Miles Morales Spider-Man in the MCU instead of yet more Peter Parker origin stories. Not the same thing at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm so bored of the constant Peter Parker origin stories. Miles would at least have been a fresh take on a Spider Man origin story.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-19 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It might as well be given how the only reason why people want Miles is because he's black.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
did you seriously just insinuate that being black automatically equals having a disadvantaged background

yikes...............

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no. I'm pointing out that having a disadvantaged background is equally possible with a black character as it is for a white character.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it does? Because of a thing called racism? Even if she weren't disadvantaged in the economic sense, which nobody said she would have to be if she were black.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If she was Clarice Starling she would have been brought up poor. Because that is Clarice's back story: poor West Virginia, pulled herself out of poverty by through hard work and determination.

If they changed her back story as well as her color then they might as well have gone whole hog and given her a new name too.
