Technically he said "POC" but lbr in Hollywood blacks are the only minorities that matter when it comes to 'racebending' or whatever you want to call it. If we're lucky we get a token Asian.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
let's not with "blacks"

Some of us prefer the term black. I don't like African-American for myself. My ancestors were stolen from Africa. I've never been there. I feel it's inappropriate for me to take on that title when others who were born there deserve it better. We are all black. We all have African heritage. But those who came from the Motherland really are African-Americans or, if they choose, they're just Americans, just like me.

Of course, being southern with a common animal last name, she could have been NA/FN, bit god forbid *my* people get some airtime beyond Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Strictly speaking that isn't airtime, but only Netflix really knows what their view numbers are in comparison to broadcast numbers.

I could've sworn I recently saw it mentioned somewhere (drive-by Tumblr post, maybe) that the creators wanted Ellen Page for the role.

Now I'm wondering if I dreamt it instead.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He said both, actually. He wanted to get Ellen or he wanted to make Clarice a POC.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thanks! I'm glad to hear I wasn't imagining it. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't see how making Starling a black woman would've been a huge change. Wasn't the whole idea of being "white trash" indicative of a disadvantaged background and subsequent career struggle? How would that change with a black character? What part of Clarice's pertinent childhood details would be impossible if she were black instead of white?

But yeah, it does sound a little racist if THIS is the detail that bothers you out of all the other significant changes Fuller's made to the series vs. the movies or books.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH it does feel racist that of COURSE thy want a PoC to come from a ~trashy~ background.

Can't a character just be the way they are in the books without it being a huge affront to black people?

Like all the people who are legit upset that Peter Parker was a white guy in the new MCU reboot.

I was kind of hoping Fuller would have written Clarice as a trans woman but there's no chance that idea will get explored now.

I've always wanted to see 'The Crying Game' with cannibalism.

On a tangential note, Louis Gossett Jr. was originally considered for the Lecter role in Silence of the Lambs. What sort of flap do you think THAT would have created?

That would have been AMAZING. I highly intelligent, self-aware, cannibal psychopath of color? I would adore that.

No, I'm not a serial killer fan. I just love to see black people in power. Good or evil? I'll take both.

Tbh I don't think he had any intention of bringing Clarice into the show anyway.. he's so caught up in his personal hannigram fanfiction everything he and DLC say about Starling is desperation at best

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this secret makes no sense at all. Hannibal, the TV show doesn't have rights to the Clarice Starling character.
