Anyone who harrasses anyone for their fanfiction writing and reading kinks is the worst.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE.

I recently had someone defend my choice for writing noncon by saying I might be an abuse victim and this MIGHT be my coping mechanism. As if that's the only way this sort of writing might be excused. When, in reality, it's just fiction, I religiously tag things accordingly, if you're not specifically looking for my kind of kink, you're not going to accidentally click my writing, if you do get triggered just by the rape warning tag that's not my problem. I'm not an abuse victim and I am still fascinated with noncon and I'm tired of having to say that. I'm not a victim of murder (or even violent crime) and I like that too! I'm not a parent and I like kidfic! Will the wonders never cease?! It's almost like I'm using fiction to, I don't know, experience things I wouldn't normally experience???

Sorry I'm bitter. It's one thing if it's just trolls, but to have people who profess to like my writing, but only if I'm an abuse victim writing to cope, is just unpleasant.

It seems like people getting on a false moral standing to excuse "calling out" someone. To convince themselves that they're "morally in the right" for doing it. They don't want to admit they're being a bully, even though they are. People do this a lot.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if you've had to deal with this.

It's true, people write things for all kinds of reasons.

Hugs if you want them...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm also tired of people who don't realize that a) not everyone who's been abused wants to talk about it with internet strangers and b) that there are many different types of abuse.

I shouldn't have to pull out my "It happened to me, too" card in order to be treated with a modicum of respect, or to stop people from telling me that I'm "doing it wrong!"

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you're not telling any one else they're doing it wrong then there's no issue. Are you?

I know right. A know a few crazy fucktards in my fandom that DEMAND people who ship a certain pairing show proof that they're been abused as children, so they can make sure they're not "romanticzing" abuse and like the paring for all the "right" reasons.

It's really damn gross.

Me too OP. Expect I usually see this for fanart instead of fic.

The whole thing reminds me of the the time a few batshit crazies in the Sherlock fandom doxxed, secretly videotaped, publicly harassed them to the point of making them cry, and accussed actual child sexual abuse survivors of being pedophiles because they apparently liked dubcon and drew Watson looking kinda young...or some crazy bullcrap like that.

To anyone who thinks harassing child abuse surviors is an okay thing to do, it's not and you're all awful awful people.

OP:

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've fortunately never experienced this, but I've witnessed it happening to a disturbing degree.
But I do have friends who have been sexually assaulted and sometimes they'll make gallows humor style jokes about it and I'm not going to tell them not to because 1. Almost all of the times they're in private conversations 2. I've never been sexually assaulted, but if this helps you deal with it in a healthy manner, more power to you, friend.

Re: OP:

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
People who try to police how abuse victims should act and feel, are honestly almost just as bad as victim blamers and abuse-apologists imo.

I've seen one friend stalked and dogpiled and shit upon because of her way of coping and empowering herself in dealing with her childhood abuse issues. So I totally agree.

People can be so shitty. And hypocritical.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so weird to see this happening now, because in my fifteen years of online fandom, all the fandoms I've been in have had lots of rape fic with not a single complaint that I can recall.

Is this just happening in Sherlock fandom, or have people encountered it in other fandoms as well?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I see it in my animanga fandom. People getting shit on for underage+noncon, or just underage. And this is on AO3 too so it's not even like the mods will side with the riled-up anons...

Thankfully no one is giving them the time of day, but I still feel bad for the authors who are getting harrassed.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all fandoms are like Sherlock.
Sherlock is like, at the very bottom of the barrel. You can't get much lower then that.

The only other ""abusive"" pairing I've been harassed for liking is Jasper/Lapis. But the harrassment of that part of the SU fandom never really goes beyond getting yelled at over the Internet.
So I still count it leagues above Sherlock.

I think it's something that's kinda slowly gaining momentum. I've seen it popping up in other places, too.

Yea, I can't even remember how long I've been in fandom...at least as long as you, and I've seen rape fic in every damn fandom I've ever dipped my toe in; most the time no one seems to care. I do realize it's a sensitive subject, but I wonder why some people are just freaking out about it now.

Plus, it's fiction, etc.

Unfortunately, Sherlock fandom is hardly an isolated event. This is largely how fandom is becoming on tumblr. Doxxing someone who disagrees with you, shaming them and policing how everyone sees parts of fandom and all in the name of social justice.

And often they aren't even correct. For example, they'll assume x character is gay with no proof and then try and shame people for reading x character as bi. Or say y relationship is abusive and if you read y relationship, you're an abuse apologist!!

Srsly tho, I hate having to use the abuse survivor card to justify my FICTIONAL interests, especially since I would rather not tell a bunch of people online my experiences. And everyone heals differently anyway.

Whatever happened to YKINMK anyway

Whatever happened to YKINMK anyway

That was the old days. The pendulum is now swinging in the opposite direction. It'll be interesting to see how far it goes, how long it lasts, and what happens when it starts inevitably reversing course again.

Couldn't agree more.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen this happen in my current fandom. It pisses me off. I see a lot of readers (some of whom I know have never been abused) in my fandom harass writers if the story features abuse and it's made me wary of writing fic that features some of my own experiences. Mostly because I know I'd blow a casket. Non-survivors harassing survivors for how they cope has always been a hot button for me because some survivors feel pressured to open up about their experiences and when they do some asshole always comes along with "I bet you're lying to avoid criticism!" Fuck that mentality.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of the reasons why I'm really happy that the main fandom I'm in is small enough and lucid-minded enough that as long as you tag your shit, no one cares if you post "questionable" kinks.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
one of the guys I follow on tumblr has been documenting a breakdown* That started with exactly this shit. right down to preferentially attacking abuse survivors.
