Griping about tumblr

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2015-07-26 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Things I'm tired of on tumblr:

--Getting messages from people I unfollowed asking why I unfollowed them and how heartless and cruel I am for unfollowing them
--Finding out anyone over the age of 30 follows me/Finding out I was following someone over the age of 30
--Insane, annoying, or awkward bloggers that I can't seem to avoid, even if I blog and blacklist them
--People reblogging posts tagged "personal" or "do not reblog."
--Getting told how to run my blog (i.e. what to post, how to tag, how much to post, etc.)
--Guilt tripping (i.e. "I see you scrolling past this," "you're heartless if you don't reblog," "your mom will die if you don't reblog this," etc.)

If there was somewhere else to blog and get the content I'm looking for, I'd leave tumblr in a heartbeat.

Just out of curiosity what's with the second one I never really got that. Mostly because in my experience I'm not really involved with my followers beyond responding occasionally.

Is there something wrong with people over 30?

Yeah, what the heck? I didn't realize there was something wrong with anyone over the age of 30.

Because it feels like my mom or my mom's friends are following me, trying to be "cool" with the kids. Like if I was out with friends and a 40 year old lady wanted to hang out with me, I'd have the same reaction. I'm 22, and I don't want to hang out with people who pay mortgages and have kids.

all i can say is have fun when you're 30 and fandom still

Re: Griping about tumblr

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh...I guess.

Some people just follow blogs they think look cool, to be fair.

Re: Griping about tumblr

da

I'm the same age as you and that still strikes me as a weirdly immature thought process. Plus, there are a lot of people who are our age (or even younger) who have gotten married and become parents while there are many people years older who have done neither.

Lol

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
lol what

I'm the same age and I'd MUCH rather discuss fandom with an adult than some 14 year old or w/e

Do that many people on tumblr mention their age before following a blog? And is the level of interaction so high that it's equivalent to hanging out? Because I never got that impression.

I always saw it more as a concentrated fandom dump site where you can find blogs with things that interest you, I'm not sure I'd even notice someone's age unless it was all they talked about.

Perhaps the ayrt is on tumblr to find "cool" peers to look up to and needs to know what they are like irl. Me, I just like tumblr for the prettiness and commentary, age might roughly correlate with maturity of insight but nooooottt always.

"cool" with the kids

um

lol

you're a bit of a wanker

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
lol I'm going to be 30 this year and I don't have a mortgage or kids

22 is too old to be thinking of 30+ as your mom's age, you sound like an immature 13 year old

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
so a mere eight years above you is what 'mom tier' consists of?

pff, enjoy your fleeting fandom years!

I follow people if they post the kind of content I like to reblog. Most of those people happen to be ten or more years younger than me (I'm 30). I'm not faking anything to try and be a cool kid, I honestly share those interests with them. I've followed people up to as old as 50 for the same reasons, it didn't even occur to me that anyone thought older bloggers had ulterior motives. But that's tumblr for you, always assuming the worst, sneakiest meanings about the most mundane actions.

Oh my god, that first one. I use Tumblr on my phone a lot and sometimes when I'm mindlessly scrolling through a tag my thumb will accidentally hit the 'follow' button. Obviously I have no reason to follow random blogs so I just take them off the list, but the number of times people have felt the need to come after me for a reason... Have some pride, Jesus.

lol at your second one and i'm younger than you

(following anyone under 16 makes me feel like a creep though)

Same, makes me feel sort of like a chaperone at a dance or something. Do I have to be a good influence for these kids? I am not prepared for this kind of responsiblity

Re: Griping about tumblr

If you want to post something on a public site and get upset if people reblog it, wouldn't it just be easier to...idk, get a diary or something if you want it to stay private?

I'm not sure why people are giving you flak over the age limit thing. I'm 30 myself, and I'm actually pretty uncomfortable with the idea of people that I still very much consider "young" following me or trying to be friends or something. There's a vast gap in experience, regardless of what side of it you're on, and it's pointless to act like there isn't.

Re: Griping about tumblr

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2015-07-26 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for getting my point. There's nothing wrong with older people in fandom, but I feel uncomfortable adults and kids that have big age gaps in comparison to me. I had no idea people would be so upset about this.

It's more how you presented it. "trying to be cool"? Really? Most people of any age who are in fandom are there because they're having fun.
It's especially funny to get annoyed about it on tumblr, where the level of interaction is often pretty low. Oh no, somebody who's over 30 just reblogged a photoset you reblogged from somebody else which has 10k notes. Ohhh nooooo.

Oh, other people get your point; they just think it's stupid as fuck.

Re: Griping about tumblr

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL at that second one. I'm 27 and I still have no kids or a mortgage. And even if I did, I can garantee you that I wouldn't feel any different at the age of 30 than I do now.

There's no ~magical~ difference or change when you hit age 30 compared to 22.

Hell, I know quite a few people younger than me who have their lives in control and feel like adults way more so than I do.

That generalization is shit and you should feel bad because of it.

I don't feel bad. Not even a little bit.
