Parental Garnet-Steven fic

Does anyone in the SU have any fic recs that center on Garnet being an awesome mom for Steven? The cuter the better.

Star Wars Books/Comics

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the movies and I'm especially interested in the Jedis. I'm open to anything, but for a specific, what are the good Jedi books/comics? I'm especially curious about the Jedis at the height of their power or earlier, and about the Jedis who survived Order 66 and then went on to help Luke out (and hopefully remained alive).

But really, any good Jedi books. And, which book should I start with?

Kind of the starting point for Star Wars novels is Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy; not as Jedi-focused as some but much better than the average. "I, Jedi" (I think by Stackpole?) is good for straight Jediness, and the X-Wing series is less Jedi-y but quite exciting and with great veins of humor.

Fantasy novels

Anybody got any recs? I usually like children's books and I don't like the high fantasy genre at all. I'd also prefer to avoid sad endings but as long as the book is a good ride and the ending is justified, I probably won't mind too much.

My favourites are Diana Wynne Jones' stuff of course, particularly The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, but I quite adore her other works that take huge inspiration from myths and folklore. In the same vein, I also liked Christopher Healy's first A Hero's Guide book, though there was one part towards the ending that made me go 'Ugh oh no' and dampened my enjoyment of it so I didn't pick up the rest of the series.

Yangsze Choo's the Ghost Bride? It draws heavily from Chinese folklore (though it's sort of a supernatural/fantasy/romance mix?).

She writes YA fantasy and not children's, but you should check out some of Maggie Stiefvater's stuff. She's cited DWJ as an inspiration several times.

Always always always Patricia McKillip. Very capital-R Romantic fantasy, really well done and beautifully written.

Patricia C Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles are a great, fun, Ya fantasy option.

Robin McKinley does a lot of stories based of fairy tales; Beauty is her YA retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Rose Daughter the adult version of the same story. Sunshine is an amazing vampire novel by her (vampires that are SCARY AS FUCK with some great worldbuilding of a society where magic and supernatural creatures are a given), Chalice a similarly fairy tale-feeling story but one that I believe isn't based on a preexisting tale. People tend to love or hate her writing; I love her long winding sentences and asides but YMMV.

George MacDonald. Just...George MacDonald.

Have you read any of Diane Duane's So You Want To Be A Wizard books?

It may be out of print, but one of my favorites from childhood was Grace Chetwin's Gom on Windy Mountain and the rest of that series. Really lovely fantasy, and while it might technically qualify as high fantasy it's written in a very homey, approachable style.

Anon from above. I remembered another one: Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel Trilogy. It's YA, very rich world building and a great heroine.

Horror, knowledge, or comedy.

Or just any you really like.

I've been LOVING "Again With This" which is a Beverly Hills 90210 recap series. I've never seen a second of that series, but it's by the original TWOP creators/current previously.tv creators, so it's hilarious. I had to stop listening to it at work because I was laughing too much.

If you haven't listened to it yet, "Lore" is a podcast that has both horror AND knowledge! It's a fairly new bi-weekly podcast by Aaron Mahnke and it explores the real history/facts behind ghost stories, urban legends etc. - it's quite nice.

Children's Books

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never read the Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events, which made me wonder what other popular or good children's books I'm missing out on. What are your recommendations?

(I've read Narnia and Alice in Wonderland.)

I borrowed Mysterious Benedict Society from my nephew and LOVED it. I'm checking out the second book soon. Apparently it's a cult hit.

The Changeover, by Margaret Mahy (Excellent magic coming of age story with amazing characters.)
Awkward, by Svetlania Chomkova (heartfelt graphic novel about junior high school rival clubs)
Grace long, by Kristen Cashore (YA novel that's... Aw, crap, I don't wanna spoil it. It's fantasy, and fantastic!)

Re: Children's Books

These are my favourite children's lit authors:
- Roald Dahl
- Diana Wynne Jones
- L. Frank Baum (His non-Oz children's books are severely underrated and definitely worth checking out.)
- Cornelia Funke
- Bruce Coville
- L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables is her most famous work, but she also wrote other things! All of them are good.)
- Natalie Jane Prior
- Zilpha Keatley Snyder
- Lloyd Alexander (If you liked Narnia, there's a good chance you'll like his Prydain series.)
- Zizou Corder
- Eva Ibbotson
- Tamora Pierce
- Gail Carson Levine
- Jessica Day George

(Those last three technically write YA, but I'm listing them anyway since the line between YA and children's literature can be blurry.)

Artemis Fowl gets a bit repetitive in the later books but is loads of fun, really creative. Redwall gets REALLY repetitive but I'd at least read the first few (Mossflower is chronologically first just fyi). IF you can get your hands on it, Zahn's Dragonback series is a great middle-grade scifi option. Garth Nix's Seventh Tower series has some great ideas. For old-fashioned standalone children's books, The Wind Boy and The Little White Horse are two beautiful, evocative reads. If you've never read the original Winnie the Pooh, just seen the Disney versions, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by it. :D

The Fire-Us series is a surprisingly good post-apocalyptic YA series.

Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain by Richard Roberts was a pretty fun read. Haven't yet read the sequel, Please Don't Tell My Parents I Blew Up the Moon, though.

Also, Castle Hangnail by Ursula Vernon was a lot of fun, too.

ABO fic subversions

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'll read fic from any fandom that takes this trope and twists it. Less of the straight "Aww yeah, heat/knots/PORN" and more playing around with how having that kind of biology affects society as a whole. Gimme your in-denial Alphas on suppressants, yer strong independent male Omegas who are NOT PROPERTY JUST BECAUSE OF MY PHEROMONES OK HEAT ISN'T CONSENT, yer Alpha/Alpha couples dealing with infertility....

And...you know...porn. I don't mind the porn, I just don't want that to be ALL there is.
