So don't feel like scum.

Yeah. Harder than it sounds to do that, of course, but it is possible to rewrite the narrative in your head so that, when you come across something like that, you can give it as little or as much consideration as you want without it making you feel like scum.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you are a masochist people do not choose to feel like scum.

Go eat one of your legos SJW bitch.

Yeah, I'm sick of the desire to be offended and rage at stuff in fandom. I save my anger for the important things in life, fandom is where I go to enjoy things. Ragers need not apply.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know precisely when someone wants to be angry, and when they just got angry about stuff

Like, since apparently that's something that you're able to ferret out

Oh yes I just ♥ to get offended when I'm off to have a good time at the movies.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So...maybe this part of the secret doesn't apply to you?

But it sure as shit seems like there are plenty of people who DO just want to rage about something, because when they rage about how wrong it is, they get to feel powerful and just, unlike the rest of the time when they're just so downtrodden and sad about their lot in life (which must be somebody else's fault).

Lol I kinda felt this way when aou came out. Half of the MCU fandom was pretty cool, but the other half was literally just "AOU WAS LITERALLY THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND IF YOU LIKED IT OR IF YOU LIKED BRUCE/NAT YOURE LITERALLY SCUM FUCK YOU MEET ME IN THE PIT WEADON!!!"
And when anyone complained, I just saw more of, "IF YOURE FEELING BAD ABOUT LIKING AOU THATS YOUR FAULT!! STOP LIKING PROMBLMATIC MOVIES FUCKFACE!!!"
It was pretty extreme.
Luckily it's cooled down a lot since then, but damn.

And lol don't even get me started on liking "promblematic" ships in the steven universe fandom. Hoo boy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And if you even dare a little to like both MCU Clint and comic Clint... Yesh.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)

Or you dare to like the "wrong" pairings in the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I mean, some stuff is offensive, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people are reading way too much into stuff to find things that offend them.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
The area of what is 'problematic' is growing bigger and bigger everyday.
Now if there is a ship with two friends who have the audacity to disagree about something, then it is an emotionally abusive problematic ship. Or if two characters rely on each other then it is codependency and emotionally manipulative problematic ship.

I'm thinking it's less about being offending by abusive relationships, and more calling stuff abusive to shame people because they personally don't like it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i feel this, OP.

like, there's a lot of stuff to be offended over, sure, but at the same time... i have that fatigue where i'm just almost Done dealing with social justice issues.

if it bothers me, then it bothers me (either for a reason or no) but if it doesn't, then i'm not going to worry about it as much and enjoy the thing.

if someone wants to be mad at me for liking an offensive thing, then go ahead??? i'm sorry you're mad but that's not my problem really...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind people raging against the thing that they find offensive/problematic so much (it can become really tiresome if people just won't move on three seasons later) as I do the attacking of other fans for daring to like the thing regardless (at this point you have to write a whole disclaimer about how you know this and that is problematic (am starting to hate that word, too), but even that doesn't help anymore in quite a few cases and you have to further justify yourself).
It's that need to feel superior that's so damn annoying.

Personally I like to try and take a middle-ground approach when it comes to media I enjoy.

Like I'm all for discussing how something could have been done better in a game/movie/show or point out elements that are genuinely an issue(dare I say, problematic) but I often feel like a large chunk of fandom is completely incapable of this, either something is the greatest thing ever and has no flaws and is 100% perfect, or it's the most problematic piece of trash and anyone who likes it is scum.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I get tired of outrage culture sometimes, too, but "not at all meant to be taken seriously" isn't a reason why people shouldn't be outraged. "It's just a joke" is the last refuge of the obsolete racists.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, wait, hang on.

Just because "It's just a joke" is too often used by douchebags to justify rudeness DOES NOT MEAN that it's an invalid concept. If it were invalid, they wouldn't be using it! Some things really are just jokes, humorous exaggerations or nonsense for a quick laugh, unsuitable for resting weight on because that's not what they're built for.

Personally, I like when people can recognize the good and the bad. I've seen people who denied that their favorite piece of media had any flaws whatsoever (I don't think a person NEEDS to always point of flaws, but it isn't a terrible thing to admit something isn't perfect either), and I've also seen people who blatantly ignored every positive thing about the title and nitpicked it to death.

I'm in fandom to have fun and part of that includes discussion of both the positive and negative, but I try not to dwell on the negative too much. (You can enjoy things that aren't perfect. It doesn't make you a monster.) If I'm not getting anything positive out of it though, that's a sign I need to move onto something else.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
lol I can't stand how tumblr fandom needs you to write a 10 page essay on how you understand something a character did was problematic before you can say you like them, god forbid characters be human and you love them for it
