Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Some asshole has decided to go shoot up another movie theater, this one in Nashville. Is this going to be a thing now? I'm not sure I can cope with another outlet for gun violence and assholes taking their own issues out on innocents.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Solution! Don't live in the USA! Your life will improve by several orders of magnitude by that fact alone.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well (a) that's obviously not true in that moving to another country involves huge disruptions in terms of life, family, friends, community, economic opportunity

but (b) even if we just look at average quality of life statistics, I'm pretty sure that there are only a handful of countries on earth where you would expect the quality of life to improve just by moving there, most of which have strict immigration controls, and none of which are several orders of magnitude better.

i appreciate reflexive anti-Americanism, don't get me wrong, but it's still basically a first world country on a planet riven by deep economic inequality. pls don't be completely fucking stupid.

Do you live here? If you don't, please don't make jokes like this. You're not laughing with us, you're laughing at us, no matter how much you might try to pretend different.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

Dear America:
The world is laughing at you. Whether it is your flailing at failing to protect your own citizenry from their own police or from other citizens, to how you propose further violence as a solution to that violence, or that tribble with a sack of skin under it that is going to be your next president (yeah, we're just gonna take it as read you'll "elect" the most lunatic version since you've tried to rig the voting so that fewer and fewer are able to vote), or even that you refuse to allow auto manufacturers to import vans because Europe wouldn't buy enough of your chickens 50 years ago. You are a joke. Go shoot someone and make yourself feel better.
Love
Rest of the World.
P.S. Get Well Soon.

I get the snark and I feel sorry for US citizens especially as there's so much rhetoric about how it's the ~awesomist freedomist place ever, but it would be more useful for them to agitate about getting rid of the freakin guns.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be more useful for people like you to stop pretending nobody in America is trying to (of those who can), talking about, and desperately hoping those who can will do something about getting rid of the guns, instead of snarking as if because it's still happening it's our fault and we all must be okay with it because we are deluded into thinking it can't be that bad because durr Amurrikka iz gr8 fuck yeah

Look, if a classroom of dead 5 year olds isn't going to at least create some stricter gun laws about who and where you can buy guns, nothing is. They've tried. Believe me, many people have tried. But the NRA has deep pockets.

The thing is, you really can't.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-08-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
First because there are so many out there. You outlaw guns--fine. These guns don't automatically explode. You can increase the penalty for gun crimes--good idea, actually--but that doesn't affect the sort of person who'd shoot up a movie theater or a school. That person usually doesn't plan on surviving.

Second, while more gun control is a good idea, "getting rid of the guns" is a bad one. Look at the US government. Do you really think it's a good idea for this government to have a monopoly on guns? Do you think that would somehow solve all these social problems?

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we also just say at this point that a lot of the pro-gun narratives used to respond to these events are just provably wrong at this point

I'm not saying that all guns should be banned. But I think we can pretty well conclude at this point that, no, the people in theaters would not have been safer if they had had guns, for fuck's sake.

There are obviously still relevant questions and challenges about gun restrictions - how do we do them in a way that is most effective for improving public safety, how do we do them in a way that preserves private gun ownership for IE hunting, etc etc. But for God's sake I am sick and tired of all the people who flip a shit at the very mention of any regulation on guns. For god's sake, have a bone of rationality.

Yeah, two isn't really a trend. I mean...how many shootings in theaters have there been in the history of movie theaters?

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
At least three off the top of my head, if you count all theaters.

The Batman shooting in 2012 or 2013 (I forgot the year)
The Trainwreck shooting in Louisiana
This (failed) shooting at Mad Max in Nashville

So three.

Has he? All the facts from this seem a bit odd for a straight mass shooting.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean, 'a thing'? Gunmen going apeshit in a public place has been going on almost as long as guns have been around. You're just hearing more about it these days because 1) more people on the planet and 2) nearly instant news updates.

Re: Another movie theater shooting

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It is far more prevalent in the US than most other places, where not an act of war/terrorism. Besides, it is becoming more common according to an FBI study. And of the 12 deadliest shootings in the United States, six have happened from 2007 onward.

Statistically, gun rampages in US theaters and public places are quite rare. But if you compare that statistic to gun rampages in public places in other developed countries that statistic becomes startling especially considering the large popluation of the US. tldr the US has serious issues with gun rampages in public places

So we've been completely misreppresenting this attack.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-08-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
From CNN:

(CNN)The man who was killed Wednesday by Nashville police after he allegedly went after moviegoers with a hatchet and pepper spray had been committed to a mental institution four times, police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters.

Vincente David Montano was committed twice in 2004 and twice in 2007, said Aaron, citing officials in Rutherford County. Montano had been arrested Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 2004 in a case of assault and resisting arrest, police said.

"We have no motive for (Wednesday's attack)," Aaron said.

Montano had an airsoft pistol with him that he aimed and fired at police in the theater Aaron said. Such a weapon looks like a semiautomatic pistol but fires plastic or BB pellets.

only minor injuries when the weapon is a hatchet instead of a gun, even more of a reason to crack down on guns– this guy didn't accomplish shit
