"It's Aeris, not Aerith?"

Your autism is showing there, OP. Might wanna zip that up before it spills out like Lenny Kravitz's dick.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So... people who prefer "Aeris" are autistic? Wow, I know this debate always brings out the worst in people (especially on the "Aerith" side, let's be real), but that certainly escalated.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the problem is people who insist that the wrong romanization is the correct one. Reading comprehension, my dear anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Because the fact that many people prefer a different canon romanization, which incidentally is the one from the actual game in question, seems less like the problem than you getting so massively butthurt over their very existence that you call them autistic.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Autism anon wasn't me, I wouldn't use Autism as a buzzword. Second, reread it again, Autism anon was criticizing OP's statement (Aeris is right, Aerith is wrong), not their preferences. Third, the Aeris romanization is wrong. Sometimes official translations are wrong. For instance, the Spanish edition of Attack on Titan used 'Rivaille' instead of Levi. That doesn't make 'Rivaille' canon or correct, the original author has confirmed that the correct romanization is Levi. Square Japan (the ones who created FFVII) uses Aerith, so that's the correct and canon romanization.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even see how the actual Aeris vs Aerith debate is a discussion in this particularly thread, when the theme more is what an idiot you have to be to make that autistic statement. I mean, that's fucking stupid.

And here's the thing, "right" and "wrong" are pretty relative here. Even if Square Enix (note: not Squaresoft, which was the company that made FFVII) sets her official name as Aerith, that does not mean Aeris wasn't her canon name in the original game. On Western promotional materials, Aeris was used, and yes, in the official translation of the game. It was then used again in Final Fantasy Tactics and later materials, and CONTINUES to be used for the re-release of the original game. It's canon, end of story. Will it be changed in the remake? Almost definitely, but that doesn't make the name Aeris somehow invalid. It's not like the name was used in a few beta releases and then quickly changed, again, it was used in every English release and is still used.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wrong. The name "Aeris" came as a result of a translation error, it's not canon. "Aerith" has been her canon name since Day 1. If you want to use Aeris, go ahead. But that's not her canon romanization.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, you can spout that all day, but she is Aeris in Final Fantasy VII and has been for every subsequent release of Final Fantasy VII. Her being Aeris in the original game is CANON because SHE IS.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The original game is the Japanese one, not the American localization.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
which she wasn't Aerith in either.

And not "American" - the same translation was used for the NA and European releases.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
She was according to the game manual and every piece of merchandise.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. She was "Aeris" in official merchandise as well. And Aeris in the English manual.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Again, we are talking about the original game, not the shitty English translation full of mistakes and mistranslations.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
...Okay. I've actually played the original Japanese game. Guess what. It's in Japanese. She's not Aerith in it. Promotional materials in both Japan and abroad had naming inconsistencies. Doesn't change the fact that her official English name in the original game is.... wait for it... Aeris.

Not so much a mistranslation as a misinterpretation. She was always supposed to be "Aerith" but but of course エアリス (earisu) is as close as they could get to the name is Japanese. Aeris is is a perfectly valid translation, one the translator ran with because at the time it hasn't been officially stated what her name was supposed to be.

There were a lot of mistranslation in FF VII though, some even people who've only played the English version could spot. I know that people make translation errors when rushing but I'll never understand how "This guy are sick" came about.

it's gif vs jif all over again...

like sorry, idc if jif is the "correct" version, it's still wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
lol

but seriously, why would "gif" be pronounced "jif". When does g followed by i ever make anything but the hard g sound? I just can't.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Dammit!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Gin, ginger, gist, gibber...

Not to mention names like Giles and Giselle. (Which, OK, probably from the French, but still.)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
gin
gigolo
Gigi

Not that many words in English, surprisingly, but lots of words in French and Spanish, where it's the rule.

I agree it's natural to pronounce it like "gift" without the last letter, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, "gigolo" and "Gigi" aren't pronounced with a hard g? Whoops. /ESL

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You're dumb

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
this

it's clearly a hard g

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, OP!
