Inspired by #1

What aspects of tv writing/direction/design from the early 21st century will look the most dated in the future?

Re: Inspired by #1

Shaky cam to disguise shitty fighting or, more commonly, shitty CGI.

The shaky cam fake zoom in for dramatic decisions. You know, where something dramatic happens and the camera jerks around to one character, shakily zooms in real close, then back out a teeny bit to try and make it look like a camcorder shot when it is really just a plain old reaction shot. Just use a standard pan and zoom, guys, you are fooling nobody.

I think also the walk and talk, and the character asking a question at the end of one scene and not getting it answered until another scene in another location and at least twenty minutes later because...drama? NCIS is particular offender in that regard. Take a shot every time McGee asks a question then they must have had an uncomfortable silent car ride before Gibbs or Tony answer.

I happened to catch an episode of HOUSE recently, from early 2008, and it was already looking dated. I had also forgotten a lot of its signature features. The inside-the-body CGI animations never really looked very good, but they looked even worse. And then there was the ubiquitous mellow pop song played over a silent montage of the team working intensely/patient and family being sad. This was also during the period of time when EVERY leading lady on tv had gigantic blunt bangs. Definitely a dated style.

Interestingly, I think that House looked less dated in the first season. Discarding the bad animation, the cinematography and lighting was more creative. Intensely orange...sure...but still...

Whoops, that's an error on my part. It was apparently from fall 2006; right at the beginning of season 3.

It did have notably good lighting and such in the first 3 or so seasons. That same distinctive golden hue was also present on the first ~4 seasons of Bones. Both FOX shows, probably some overlap in crew.

Probably so. The House pilot was shot in black and white, which is why the colors appear so odd.

Found footage is already on the way out innit?

Is that really a style for television, though?

The tv version is the fake reality show (and fake reality show episodes) and they do seem to be dying very slowly.

I don't mean the actual fake reality shows (which is every reality show) but the ones intentionally made to ape a reality show.

Pseudo-documentaries.

The Office, Parks and Rec, Modern Family...

I disagree. I think those are similar enough to reality TV, which I don't see fading in popularity any time soon, that they'll be okay in terms of dated-ness.

I don't know. The documentary style in Modern Family in particular makes zero sense. It might just be considered a weird way of shooting something in the future.

Didn't say I was looking forward to it.

TV actors weren't always necessarily pretty, and it's only in the last 20 years when only pretty actors/actresses have made up 99% of the cast and pretty much dominated the TV scene. I think in the future we'll have more character actors vs "polished" looking pretty actors (shiny hair, amazing make-up and unblemished skin even in period and historical dramas). It's already started happening. Just look at hit shows like Orange is the New Black, Sherlock, Breaking Bad and True Detective.

TV series have become more serious, and movie stars who suddenly start starring in TV shows are no longer a joke. Which I guess results in more authentic/"real" looking actors and actresses. I love it tbh.

Super polished modern series that already look dated: Supernatural, Vampire Diaries (anything CW really), The West Wing, crime shows like CSI and Law & Oder, Grey's anatomy, Lost, American Horror Story.

The West Wing is a super polished modern series? Aside from the dated technology and fashion (some of CJ's outfits, I swear to god...), how do you figure?

The only traditionally handsome/pretty characters are Sam and Ainsley, Bartlet maybe if you push it (though he's too old to fall into the same category as CW characters). How are Leo, CJ, Toby or Josh polished pretty people? Even Donna's make-up was sometimes unfortunate.

Political Animals would fit better in that list, I'd think.

Obvious commercial breaks and/or the 24 episode season. Filler episodes. I just see more shows going the way of Netflix
