The Man From UNCLE.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So normally I roll my eyes when tumblrinas make jokes about all white men in film and television looking the same, but holy shit, those guys really do look the same.

Was this intentional? Are the characters supposed to be relatives? (I'm not familiar with this fandom, in case you haven't guessed.)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is just the angle. Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill don't really look all that much alike normally.

Maybe the movie promoters had the promo art over Photoshopped. It can be pretty distorting if done badly, in this case encouraging some sameface.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw this movie because a friend insisted I go with them and I ended up loving it. Like, it's not the best movie ever, but it was really fun and had gorgeous scenery and ridiculously attractive characters and Cold War stuff is my jam.

I insisted (okay, asked) a friend to go with me and she ended up loving it too...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. Meeee too.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I just keep watching the previews on YouTube...

I really, really want to see this but I have to wait till I can buy it. No way I can go to the theater.

I want to see it for all the reasons. But yeah, I'll probably secretly check out some of the fic afterwards. >.>;

BTW, I wonder how the original UNCLE fandom is taking this? Will they be upset??

I feel like the answer to “Will the original fandom be upset?" is always yes and no. I'm not familiar with the show, but I've seen people who hate the thought of this existing and others who are excited for it and the new fans it will bring in.

As many have said, it's similar to the Star Trek fandom in that regard.

Certainly some people who loved the original feel that what made the original so delightful was lost in the remake.

Some people who have never seen the original love the remake.

Some people love both.

In other words, fandom as usual.

I can't claim to be part of the original fandom, but my mom was and owns the entire series on DVD. I've watched quite a bit of it with her, though, and I enjoyed the movie. It's definitely not the show (especially Armie Hammer who is a COMPLETELY different Illya) but for what it is I think it's fun, and it does capture the humor of the original show.

For what it's worth I believe David McCallum (original Illya Kuryakin) has gone on record supporting it.

The movie did change some things, but the spirit of the original is still there.

From what I understand most of the show's fandom seems to like it, though obviously not as much as the original. Some are more bothered by the changes than others. A few really despise the whole thing. But I think the fandom was pretty open-minded going into it, they knew things were going to be different and were just excited that something they loved was getting attention again.

I'm an old fan of the show and I liked it. Armie Hammer's character wasn't really recognizable as Illya, but Henry Cavill was very Napoleon Solo, so that kind of evened out. And it was a lot of silly fun, with good action. I would see a sequel.

Well, sure it's shallow. But that doesn't mean it's bad.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what reason you have to watch something, if you're getting something out of it then it's worth it.

The people I follow on tumblr seem to like it, at any rate. The trailer was surprisingly good too, but I wouldn't doubt that it'll be like Kingsman and I'll see it once it's out on Blu-ray or on demand.

I bet these two are going to have a massive slash fandom. If that's what works for you... Might as well enjoy it.

Honestly the reason I want to see this film is solely for all the pretty people in it, it being fun would be an added bonus.

It's fun, the people are pretty, and the costume and set design is good. What's not to like?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, good news, anon. There's already over THIRTY YEARS of fanfic out there about these characters. It's been, at various times, one of the biggest slash pairings in all of slash fandom. You could fill shelves with the stacks of Napoleon/Ilya zines published through the 80s and 90s.

Here, start with these: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Illya%20Kuryakin*s*Napoleon%20Solo/works

There's already a ton of fic for it. The series, that is. The David McCallum lust has been real for decades. Grats, OP.

The only reason I saw this is because I wanted a new slash ship. I ended up really enjoying it, even if I didn't ship them as much as I wanted to.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
This movie was really fun to watch, and boy was everyone in it attractive. Henry Cavill in particular was so gorgeous it was a little distracting at times.

I've also read some good fic for this ship (inspired by the film) so if that's still your bag, OP, you could do worse.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it for that exact reason, OP, and I have no regrets. :-)
