Yes, they are. It's not like British people think in American accents, they think in British pronunciation and think using British words.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone thinks in words at all. Google "visual-spatial."

This has to be a joke, right?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm American, and if I spend more than a day in another country where people have an accent, I think in their accent as opposed to my own. I don't speak with that accent (because it would be crap and probably offensive), but I definitely think with it.

I think in my dialect. I think in dialect, standard German or English depending on context. I don't think that's unusual?

[personal profile] dancing_serpent 2015-08-27 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think in German or English mostly, also depending on context/general situation. Found myself thinking in French or Japanese, too. Most people I've talked to about this are the same.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
better still stop writing accents. you arent brian jacques you cant pull it off, yall. use dialectical words and phrasing all you want but stoppit with the friggin phonetics

I've seen phonetic accents done right maybe once.

This, good god. I've seen it done well on occasion, but it's only been on occasion. Most of the time it just reads horribly.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Was I the only person who sometimes thought in his dialects after reading Redwall books as a kid?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. For any fandom with audio, I will always hear the characters with the voices of their actors - complete with accents - whether speaking or thinking. I don't need to see the accent written out that way. People with different accents usually still spell words the same (and spelling differences like labor/labour don't reflect pronounciation differences). There's no reason to write that way.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Haha remember when Hetalia fanfic writers wouldn't give Sweden any vowels?? Diction is insanely annoying to read, I have read so many writing books that say "don't fucking spell it out, we all know how he talks."

I fucking hate when accents are written out. I don't need Rogue's accent written out to know she's southern. It's distracting and unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
+1000 for Rogue. Ugh I hate that.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I can agree with disliking this technique if their thoughts are still spelled with the way their accent is perceived pronunciation-wise by the other characters in relation to their own accents, or, like, if the character has a speech impediment or something and that's somehow applied to their thoughts too (so, cases in which the way their speech sounds is not reflective of what the character themselves would feel they're actually saying). But I think the actual dialect should remain the same if the writing portrays the characters' thoughts in their own words, unless there's a legitimate reason to make a distinction.

Either way, what's much worse is when characters are portrayed as writing exactly how they talk.

I like your unrelated pic.

(Guess what accent I saud that in!)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
What? Of course we are!

I probably have a stronger accent when I'm thinking than when I'm speaking or writing, because I code-switch.

to refute this; I read a book* in which a new character has a thick accent until the book goes to his pov, then he sounds normal and everyone else has the odd accent. so he definitely thinks in his own accent.

*it is nothing but puns and dirty jokes.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking in fully-formed word sentences is really a literary thing for the convenience of the reader, to be honest. When you think, you think in terms of the ideas directly, which is a little bit different to thinking of the ideas through the filter of words.

Of course, generalized abstraction is hard to represent in text, so thinking in sensible sentences is the next-best thing.

Uh, I think in sentences.

My fandom has a lot of American fans who try to write Mancunian accents as some species of Cockney. Nothing makes me backbutton faster.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
You say that like you know this for a fact when you couldn't possibly know what other people sound like in their own heads. Your secret doesn't even make sure. Of COURSE my thoughts sound like the way I talk. What the hell sort of voice do you think I'd use?

Some people are aware enough of accents to know that even if their own accent is what registers as "normal" form them, they are still speaking an accent, just as much as anyone from a different country is. I am aware I have an accent - my accent is what I consider "normal" because it is what I hear the most, but it's an accent.

And when I think, I think in my own voice, with my accent.

Now what I don't think would come up in a story is in-depth thought about what accent people think with. The only time I think mental accents would come up is if there was a scene about language and accents, or telepathic communication. I could really see a scene where two people (with different accents) talk telepathically for the first time and one character goes "Oh! You even think in that accent!".
