Chris Pratt's alright, but I can't fucking stand Jennifer Lawrence. She ruined Mystique.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
did she really?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, she did. Anyone who thinks otherwise either hasn't seen the original X-Men films with Rebecca Romijn, or is an idiot with no taste.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I had more in mind, like

how did she, specifically, as an actress screw it up

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mystique is supposed to be unflinchingly badass. Lawrence's portrayal of the character is not. She also lacks Romijn's charisma. Not to mention, her hair and makeup in XMFC was so godawful it almost distracted me from the billion other flaws in that piece of shit movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know she was in charge of the characterization and plot, and also the hair and makeup

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
An actor should be able to use their acting skills to bring nuance to a shitty script and/or shitty characterization.

That is literally an actor's job, ffs.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-08-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
No, sometimes a shitty script is just a shitty script. See Star Wars: Episode III as an example.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You're comparing an unsalvageable mess to a mess that could have been salvaged if the cast had had more competent actors.

Not really the same.

Episode III was a mess because Episodes I and II were fractured catastrophes without conflict. Of the three of them at least Episode III had an explicit conflict with actual tension to it on the screen. Whether or not you cared about it or it was a good conflict that made best use of the characters by that point is another matter entirely.

...not really.

They should do the best with what they're given but if actors could magically un-shittify a shitty script, nobody would need scriptwriters/directors/other people who aren't actors to put on a show or movie.

"Mystique is supposed to be unflinchingly badass"... hah. Ahahahahahah.

There are some cards you can still play, anon, but "Old-school fan who understands these characters on a deep level you noobs don't even know about" is no longer one of them.

???

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Comic-book Mystique is pretty hardcore, though.

Maybe not unflinching. The comic-book version had a wife and daughter, and could hesitate out of concern for them.

Re: ???

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
The comic-book version had a wife and daughter

Wait, when did comics Mystique become canon gay

Re: ???

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Actually she's bisexual.

IKR? The anon you're replying to sounds like one of those movieverse fans who think they know everything because they read a few issues of the comic when they were 12, then looked up the characters' backstories on Wikipedia after watching the films as adults.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure even the most badass of characters was not badass when they were a teenager or young twenty something. I always assumed the unsure and insecure characterization was intentional, as her character develops into the Mystique we know.

Tasteless idiot here! I preferred Lawrence to Romijn, because the former at least had a personality.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I like her.
Guess I'm just an idiot with no taste then.

Fight scenes notwithstanding, Jennifer Lawrence was certainly lacking. Rebecca Romijn had a stillness and grace about her. Her few words were delivered with elegance and were a far cry from "What's the matter baby? You don't think I look pretty like this?"

But I like Jennifer Lawrence. Just not as young Mystique.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she was playing a young Mystic who was still trying to understand her place in the world. She wouldn't have the grace and elegance Romijin's older, experienced Mystic has.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Though tbh I can't quite connect Lawrence's Mystique growing up into Romijin's at this point and am not sure if it's the writing or the acting. But assuming sequels are just a matter of time, I'm ok with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're saying her casting was a

Mystaque?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Look I understand this is way late but I couldn't scroll past without offering you my deepest admiration

(Anonymous) 2015-08-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Rebecca Romijn will forever be the best Mystique. JLaw doesn't even hold a candle next to her.
