Mystique is supposed to be unflinchingly badass. Lawrence's portrayal of the character is not. She also lacks Romijn's charisma. Not to mention, her hair and makeup in XMFC was so godawful it almost distracted me from the billion other flaws in that piece of shit movie.

An actor should be able to use their acting skills to bring nuance to a shitty script and/or shitty characterization.

That is literally an actor's job, ffs.

No, XMFC was a terrible movie separate from the cast. Even Hoult couldn't save it.

Which one? Revenge of the Sith wasn't an actor problem, it was a director problem. George Lucas has a tin ear for performance and manages to get the worst out of the best. We've known this since Star Wars, which was saved from Lucas by brilliant post production and Marcia stepping in as an uncredited editor.

For X-Men: First Class, we can blame a script that turned Raven into Xaver's little sister, sidekick, and love-polygon plot device for the development of three different male characters. There's almost nothing to salvage from that movie other than Xavier/Magneto slash subtext and Kevin Bacon's swinging bachelor submarine.

Episode III was a mess because Episodes I and II were fractured catastrophes without conflict. Of the three of them at least Episode III had an explicit conflict with actual tension to it on the screen. Whether or not you cared about it or it was a good conflict that made best use of the characters by that point is another matter entirely.

They should do the best with what they're given but if actors could magically un-shittify a shitty script, nobody would need scriptwriters/directors/other people who aren't actors to put on a show or movie.

Comic-book Mystique is pretty hardcore, though.

Maybe not unflinching. The comic-book version had a wife and daughter, and could hesitate out of concern for them.

IKR? The anon you're replying to sounds like one of those movieverse fans who think they know everything because they read a few issues of the comic when they were 12, then looked up the characters' backstories on Wikipedia after watching the films as adults.

I'm pretty sure even the most badass of characters was not badass when they were a teenager or young twenty something. I always assumed the unsure and insecure characterization was intentional, as her character develops into the Mystique we know.

Fight scenes notwithstanding, Jennifer Lawrence was certainly lacking. Rebecca Romijn had a stillness and grace about her. Her few words were delivered with elegance and were a far cry from "What's the matter baby? You don't think I look pretty like this?"

But I like Jennifer Lawrence. Just not as young Mystique.

Well, she was playing a young Mystic who was still trying to understand her place in the world. She wouldn't have the grace and elegance Romijin's older, experienced Mystic has.

Though tbh I can't quite connect Lawrence's Mystique growing up into Romijin's at this point and am not sure if it's the writing or the acting. But assuming sequels are just a matter of time, I'm ok with it.
