Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think sexual interest is basically genetic but the expression of that in action and the construction of an identity out of the bare fact is heavily mediated by culture.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

On reflection, I would like to amend this post. I ought to have said that "sexual interest is basically biological, primarily genetic" and that the expression of sexual interest is "heavily mediated by culture and environment."

Thank you for your attention. We apologize for the error.

It's not genetic at all, otherwise identical twins would have the same sexual orientation.

It's probably hormonal.

No. But I don't think many things are 100% genetic. Nature vs nuture is a debate for a reason.

It's not outside of mass media. The answer is both in most fields.

This doesn't really have anything to do with this question but now I'm wondering if epigenetics is considered to be either nature or nurture in these debates. I never thought about that before.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

No because I think it has to do with hormones your are exposed to in the womb + genetics.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

Why are there siblings or twins with different orientations then?

(Puts on biology hat) No.
(Puts on psychology hat) No.
(Puts on bi hat) No.

What does the bi hate have to do with it?

Nah and I think it's pretty evident that it can be fairly fluid throughout a life time too. I kinda hate how often environmental factors and societal expectations are ignored in these types of conversations. I don't think you can pray the gay away or anything, but I do think hanging around other gay/bi people might make people more likely to identify as such.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if more people were open to the idea, we'd have more people who identify as very hetero-leaning bi or very gay-leaning bi.

A lot of 'technically' bi people ID in name as 100% straight or gay or lesbian due to societal factors and pressure from both sides to be 100% one or the other.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't. That's just a fact. There are identical twins with different orientations.

Epigenetics
Hormones
Environment In Utero

All these things can have an effect on orientation.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really.

Personally, both my level of interest and the subjects of my interest have varied a lot over the years (mostly for reasons that are a mystery to me).

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

I think someone is more likely to become bi then to become monosexual.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

No. More like 95%.

No, but I understand why it's easier to act as though it is. I wrote an article about it a couple years back. http://www.rolereboot.org/sex-and-relationships/details/2012-02-born-this-way-black-box-sexuality

I think sexual orientation is the same as anything else: partially genetic partially social. It doesn't really matter either way, being partially nurture doesn't make it wrong.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not. Because it isn't. Epigenetic causes are more highly weighted in the reports I have seen.

Well, no. Otherwise I wouldn't be asexual.

Everything is 100% genetic, but genes are never free of environmental influence, even in the womb.

So the answer to your question is yes and no at the same time.

I honestly don't think it matters.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-09-05 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I mean of course it does--we want to know as much scientific, medical information about human beings as we can--but practically, who gives a shit?

I agree with all this "born this way" shit. I don't think most people would make such a potentially dangerous choice willfully. But if I just decided one day "hey, I like girls more than guys, so that's what I'm going to do" who cares? That choice is perfectly valid. That wouldn't make my sex life or the relationship I'd pursue any less worthy.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope.

I do believe genetics can be a factor. Like in my case, I've always been attracted to "both genders" (I'm putting that in quotes since growing up, I didn't know such a thing as trans/genderfluid existed). However, I was also raised by a strictly Roman Catholic mother. I had no idea that anything other than heterosexuality existed. But I still had those feelings. I just thought something was "wrong" with me. That I was "broken" and didn't understand the whole attraction thing.

Now that I've grown up and seen more of the world, I have a name to put to my orientation. And now I can see looking back, I highly suspect my Dad may be bi, but he's so far in the closet, he's in Narnia (his abusive, alcoholic father did his best to beat any "sissyness" out of him).

However, I also know that others have very different experiences. There are some who choose to lean farther to one side of the scale than others, and some who experience trauma. Those are perfectly legitimate as well.

So I think sexuality is as complex as humans are, and that includes orientation.

Re: Do you think sexual orientation is 100% genetic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone has an "inner compass" that points out the direction(s) of their sexual orientation but I don't know where that comes from. Some of it may be genetic for some people.

I think gender identitl is the same way.
