OP, I'm curious - have you seen it? I ask because I used to think that too, but I'd never actually seen more than half an episode. The Ross/Rachel stuff is stupid, I agree that aspect is overrated, but it's actually a pretty good show imho.

I mean obviously Friends as much as anything else on the Internet is caught up in the endless cycle of overrated, underrated, overhyped, reappraised, thinkpiece'd, etc etc etc. So it's hard to make any definitive judgment on how it's considered.

but this seems to be a very common opinion.

It was dumb in first run. Age wasn't going to help.

I feel the same. But give me a show with Joey, Phoebe and Chandler and I'd watch it.

Even as a kid I thought this show looked stupid and I've never bothered with it.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-09-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. It does have its moments, but overall it just doesn't really hold up the test of time in my eyes. But that's pretty much the case with any 90's comedy to me ('Frasier' being the sole exception). :T

On a more petty level, I also kind of resent it because, as an anon said above, it has a very 'trust fund'/infinitely disposable income, 90's New York yuppie-ish feel to me. And as someone who grew up in a very middle class, Midwest America atmosphere... yeah, no.

I liked it(still do even if some of the jokes make me wince these days) but I agree that's there's a fair amount of rose-tinted goggles when it comes to this show. It was fun but not the greatest thing ever.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated it then.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish it didn't have that awful laugh track. I think it wouldn't be half as obnoxious if it didn't have that going on.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I'm irritated by the praise necessarily, but I feel very similar.

I watched quite a bit of it again recently and it's just not that good. It's decent, but it's far from great.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it when I was younger, but I tried to go back and rewatch it out of nostalgia and I couldn't believe how terrible it was. Call it living in a more ~sensitive~ time or whatever, but a lot of the punchlines ended up just being extremely uncomfortable, and the characters were all just...genuinely terrible people, save maybe Joey. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I saw an episode or two by virtue of having been around back then, and I was amazed at how unfunny it was. But that's how I feel about most American sitcoms.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
For me that's Seinfeld.

I still like it. Just feel like the thread needs at least one pro-Friends comment. :P

It's weird because I usually hate these kinds of American sitcoms. Like I couldn't even get through an episode of HIMYM, and Two and a Half Men had its moments but become unbearable when Charlie left. Lots of others as well I just never got.

Don't ask me what it is that makes Friends different and something I can always watch when there's nothing else on (usually because it's ALWAYS on somewhere, but no one forces you to watch it...unless you got some shitty friends/family, in which case sorry). I would never say it's the funniest show ever (Hell, no), or that EVERY joke is a winner (definitely not) but I guess the best word I can use to describe it would be...safe? Like, cosy? Again, not sure why.

But yeah, maybe it is just the nostalgia factor. I don't think there's anything wrong with that though so long as you acknowledge it's not perfect and get why others don't like it. Which I do. /shrug.

I loathe this show partially for itself and partially because it reminds me of my ex. He loved it and watched it whenever it was on. Since it's syndicated, it was on a lot. Then he'd get angry with me if I didn't watch it with him. Sitting in the room with him and reading a magazine or knitting wasn't enough. I had to have my eyes on the screen or he'd get pissed.

There are reasons he's my ex. And I fucking hate Friends.

I'm not sure why I like it, because I do find most of the cast obnoxious, but I do :/

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I managed to miss it first time round, so it wasn't until a few years ago I watched the show. It was shown back-to-back on whatever channel the guys at work were watching so I think I ended up watching it multiple times. At least it felt like multiple times as all the episodes seemed to be the same.

I'm British and I've never had any romantic notions about the US or New York so IDK if that's a factor in me just not getting 'it', but I just found all the characters ridiculous. I think Coupling was the superior show.

I did read an alternative ending someone put on Reddit (I think it was Reddit) that said the entire series was a fabrication of homeless Phoebe who was watching them through the cafe window and creating their entire storylines in her head. I'd have liked that, in a weird twisted way.

I actually like the show better now than when it was originally on the air. Though I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'm now closer in age to the characters than I was back then.

I do however find the Ross/Rachel thing very overrated, especially now that I've actually seen the episodes where they were actually together - very blah. I'll take Chandler/Monica over them any day.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I used to watch it with my aunt, and we always had a standing Thursday night date to watch it together over the phone while I was away at college. So, probably it's nostalgia for me. But I will always love Chandler, and no one can convince me not to.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds terrible, but you really did have to be there, I think. It was a near-ubiquitous show that everyone "around the watercooler" watched. I don't think it holds up to binge-watching, but it worked really well as a "once a week" kind of thing where everything feels like it's happening at a more lifelike pace.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
My sister HATES this show. It is a bit overrated, but I can't deny that I like the show and there are some legitimately funny stuff that the show had.
