Car Questions

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm getting a new car! It's exciting, except I don't really know much about cars. I've looked up information about several different cars, but opinions are so varied on everything. I'm just going to ask here.

I'm looking for a small car. Like, really small. It's just me, so I don't need much space. It also needs to be able to handle severe winter weather.

Any suggestions? What car do you drive and do you like it? If you don't own a car or don't drive, what's your dream car?

Out of curiosity, are you focused on a small car for reasons other than it being just you? Because I think you'll have a hard time finding something that's good for winter weather that's also small (I would recommend a SmartCar because tiny, but also they have rear wheel drive and would be awful on ice or snow). FWIW, I am the only person in my car 99% of the time, but I have a Toyota Corolla and it doesn't feel excessive or like I'm drowning in all this extra car real estate. And it was nice to have the backseat and trunk for when I moved.

I'd prefer a smaller car for parking. I have anxiety when it comes to parking; I always feel like I'll hit the cars around me even when there's plenty of room. A small car would calm my nerves.

I've researched SmartCars; I'm still confused about the winter driving. I've seen a video of someone driving it over ice for a long period of time and read from many owners that it's great for winter. On the other hand, I've also read that it's not good on snow. It does fine in the youtube videos I've watched at least. In any case, my current car has been doing a terrible job for the past year; it got stuck in the driveway every other day and my commute increased by about half an hour because I had to drive really slowly to avoid spins.

Are you driving on all-seasons? Because appropriate winter tires really make a difference.

I prefer a small car myself. My current car is a Honda Fit, which replaced a great little 96 Civic hatchback. Both have been very goor in winter weather-- here in Maritime Canada you see an awful lot of hatchbacks, particularly Hondas, and we get an awful lot of winter. So again I say, whatever you end up getting, make sure you get good winter tires.

And consider a Honda, because they are fun and reliable and friendly!

Toyota Yaris. You can get them in two door and four door, they're very manuverable with excellent gas mileage, cheaper than a Corolla and reasonably roomy for a car that size. Like, three people including you is fine, four people can fit but the engine will struggle on hills. It doesn't have much trunk space if that matters, but the backseats fold down so you can fit more stuff if needed. I haven't had a problem with it on snowy, icy roads, but winters aren't that bad here and our city plows and salts diligently. Splurge for good tires, maybe snow tires if you live someplace where they measure the winter snowfall in feet.

Recommending a Prius & sturdy tires. Great mileage, small-but-spacious, and good even in unplowed snow-day storms (if you have a garage or someplace indoors to park it). Mine's an '03 and it's still running smooth.

I have a Yaris and it has handled okay through 8 Wisconsin winters. It has its limits, but part of good winter driving is recognizing those limits. I see a lot of small cars around here - Yarises, Honda Fits, Mini Coopers, etc. I live in a city, though.
