OP, are you me?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't write it, but I do imagine it. Tons of it.

I only really ever imagine RPF of the actors BEING actors working on the show in question though, and like, discussing and thinking about their work and their characters and their scripts, and analyzing them and trying to figure out their own characters' motives based on the scripts and discussing them, and sometimes suffering character bleed. Basically, I like to project my own meta analysis ideas and theories onto the actors who play the characters I like. (And sometimes the writers and showrunners too. Lots of times, the network execs are the story's villains.)

I never have any interest in RPS or AUs where they do shit unrelated to acting.

I used to be okay with RPF and then I watched this youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aoglfBZvyc) and it made me feel so bad for that poor girl that I've been quietly anti ever since.

Well at least you feel ashamed afterwards?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I empathise because I feel similarly. I feel RPF is an invasion of privacy and a step too far (even if it's technically legal). But I have written some rpf in the past, including some explicit and kink fics, and been told the fics were good.

Why not set your fics to private or only share them via private correspondence, on request? That was what I did. They were all gift fics so that made it easier.

I wouldn't post RPF publicly, but I understand those who do. It's that same urge with any ship - you just want to find others who feel the same.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think you're a shitty person for doing it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. As long as you don't show it to the actors or write child porn, do what you want.

I'll never get the idea that writing words is automatically a moral violation. You don't know them, so your imaginary version is not much different from a fictional character. As long as you're not showing it to people who it would make uncomfortable you're not harming anyone.

Outside of parody, I just find it gross.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate shipping rps, I find it gross, tinhatty and disrespectful, and resist myself when I'm inclined so, but sometimes I just can't help it.
:( I'm in an rps fandom currently and I both loath it and love every second of it. Yeah, I'm disgusting and I know it but I won't deny myself the pleasure.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It feels kinda skeevy to me, but I have one pairing I love and have written for. All behind internet walls, but yeah....

Once I wrote an AU story for them, and decided it was too good to be fanfic (and enough OOC to stand on its own). I changed a few names and published it as romance.

No one has ever guessed. :D

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be easier on yourself to simply try to be less judgmental?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm part of an itty bitty RPF community for an old band and I don't feel bad about it in the slightest. They aren't gonna read it, and I'm not about to feel like a villain for writing about people when folks have been writing about real people since, you know, forever. If historical fiction and biopics are fine then so is RPF.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're writing it about Wil Anderson in your pic, he's probably read and enjoyed it.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck shame. Like what you like. Shame is a waste of time.

There's no reason to feel ashamed for writing and posting your work, especially if you're getting positive feedback and/or requests for more. There's also no shame in writing about "real people" because, as many others have said in this thread, it's not the actual person you're writing about. They have, consciously or unconsciously, created a public persona, and that person is much like a character that's written on screen (PR teams actually write a lot of what comes out of celebrities' mouths in interviews/on red carpets/etc).

Most everyone has a public persona... the voice that you use on the phone with strangers is probably not the voice you use when talking to your mom or your sibling... the face you put on at work belies the truth of what's going on in your private life...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't read it nor do I write it - basically, I can't stand it - but I have easier time to stomach people who write it as Real Person Fiction rather than those who think it's Real Person Fact. With the first ones I feel like there's this understanding it's just fiction, because people realize they don't actually know the people you're writing about and they create this fictionalized version/interpretation of the actor.

It's the latter ones that really creep me out because there really are people out there who think they know who the actors are outside their jobs. Those are the people I worry about and fear they'll take it a step too far and go stalk the actors or something.

When you start to take your stories as the truth, that's the time when you need to get help.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, so many people are being judgey and old-school about RPF in this thread.

Personally, my feelings about RPF are:

1. NO bringing RPF to the attention of the real people your characters are based on. EVER.

2. ALWAYS include an easily visible disclaimer that lets readers know your fic is FICTION.

3. NO eroticized rape of real-person characters. No torture porn of real-person characters. No writing real-person characters as rapists/torturers if they're not proven (or at least soundly accused) of these crimes in real life.

4. THINGS THAT ARE GENERALLY IN POOR TASTE: Incest RPF. RPF implying that a female character's child is secretly the child of her male costar (or whatever) rather than the child of her spouse. Omegaverse RPF and other AUs that could easily be viewed as body horror. Any RPF that obviously delights in tearing down a real-person character who "comes between" one's ship. (So like, you wanna write BC and Martin Freeman getting together, that's okay, but if you write Sophie Hunter as a conniving bitch who ends up broke and wretchedly miserable, alone and hated by everyone who knows her, then I'm going to think that's pretty low, and creepy, and in poor taste.)

I guess the bottom line is that there are some things which hit so intimately and/or disturbingly at a person's life/identity, that even just tying a real person's name to said things feels wrong (i.e. potentially damaging and deeply insensitive).

All that said, this whole black/white view of RPF is just plain irrational when so many popular and critically lauded movies and books are RPF. Like, unless you think The Social Network is disgusting and deserves condemnation, it's pretty hypocritical to claim you're against RPF. The critically acclaimed TV series Masters of Sex is RPF which deviates wildly from reality and depicts its characters in some very intimate and ethically questionable situations. Should it be condemned? What about an award winning novel like Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates, which is RPF of Marilyn Monroe? Or that movie where Helen Mirren plays the queen? I mean that is literally RPF about the CURRENT QUEEN OF FUCKING ENGLAND. So is that a problem, yes or no?

I think people have a tendency to presume the very worst of RPF, often as a fairly knee-jerk response, when in reality it varies broadly in tone, intent, quality, content, commercial viability, and just about every other aspect.

Fic is fic. You're writing a character. Anyone who tells you otherwise is merely moralizing. End of story.

I hate RPF but if you're going to do it anyway, you may as well try to get over your shame.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never written it, but I'll read it depending on who it's about. I feel a bit bad about it, I can't imagine writing anything involving RPF myself, but as long as the author isn't showing the person they're writing about the fic, I don't think it's the worst thing. (it depends on the fic, of course, like incest/child abuse? nope. But like...imagining a celebrity having an affair with another celeb, and writing a story about it is harmless imo.)
