Advice

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-09-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So, since moving home I have not had a single good night of sleep. I've been having nightmares every night and waking up multiple times. Part of it is probably the stress of job hunting and of living at home again. But I think part of it is the fact that my parents keep the house at 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

So, they both normally live in a tropical country, so they like the heat. I don't. And I'm not going to be home long hopefully so I haven't brought up the topic. But it has gotten to the point where I need sleep. And where I don't even want to get dressed because I want to stay in my cool pajamas all day.

How do I broach this topic with them? And do I even do so, or do I just suck it up? They generally are of the "their house their rules" point of view so it will probably take a lot of work to convince them of anything.

Is there anything else you can do? Open windows or leave a fan on that won't chill the rest of the house?

I have the ceiling fan on. It doesn't make enough of a difference, though, when the house is 80 and I'm used to keeping my place at 60. I'm the kind of person who needs a blanket to sleep, so sleeping without one isn't helping.

Ah. Ceiling fans don't cool air, they only make it circulate around and keep it even in the room. I meant a fan like one of these

Can you get a box fan and set it up in your room?

I have a ceiling fan. Maybe I should invest in a second fan, though?

Definitely a second fan that can blow air directly on you.

Invest in several box fans maybe. My apartment gets very very hot and I have three fans on full blast from April to October.

Ugh, my sympathies. I assume you can't turn off the heat to your room or open the window. Can you get a pedestal fan?

I'm not sure how to talk to them except say that you are finding it hard to sleep because of the heat, could they help make your room cooler in the meantime. It's not like you're choosing to not sleep.

We have an alarm. And it is 95 degrees outside, so I don't think opening the window would help. I have a ceiling fan, but maybe I could ask them if we could get a pedastal fan too.

I was in Boston, but I've moved home to San Antonio, Texas. It won't cool off for another month at least. I hate it here, honestly. I can't wait to find a job so I can be gone.

That's a hell of a difference. I was born in Michigan and just being in Cincinnati has been torture for 25 years.

My sympathies: I also live in SA and I hate it. 10 months of inferno

Also, as someone who moved to the tropics for a few years... I got used to sleeping with the heat, but it did take me a while to change. I slept naked with a cotton waffle weave blanket. Probably doesn't help you.

Also, if your parents are prepared to use such a colossal amount of energy to keep the house that warm, what about a portable A/C to cool it? Though you're probably skint.

They aren't using energy to keep it warm. It is 95 degrees outside, so even keeping it at 80 cools it a little. Just not nearly enough for me.

That doesn't work with a ceiling fan. I may have to get another fan, though.

I'd say what you do kind of depends on the sort of relationship you have with your parents. I would think nothing of asking my mom to adjust the heat if I was staying at her place, but my mom isn't an authority figure.

If your parents are the type to get angry at that kind of request then it might be best to just suck it up and find some place to move out to ASAP.

They aren't going to get angry, but they also aren't likely going to say yes. I think I am going to ask if i can get a fan, though.

Unfortunately, moving out isn't an option until I find a job. I'm looking, but until I have a job I can't move anywhere.

As there is such a disparity from their preferred temperature to yours (and because your preferred temperature would cost a lot more), I would say to suck it up.

This article has some tricks I use, as I don't have air conditioning.

Showers really do help. As do box fans. Good luck!

TBH, I'm kind of floored at the idea of trying to keep an apartment below 70 F in summer--but I was also brought up to keep the house at 68 in winter. I'd suggest getting a box or pedestal fan, as others have suggested, and maybe keeping a basin with some ice water and a washcloth by your bed, so you can put a cold compress on your forehead or sponge yourself with ice water, or both, if you wake up in the night. There are also special pillows that don't get hot--they're designed for people who have hot flashes. Places like Bed, Bath and Beyond sell them.

Re: Advice

In Boston I kept my place at 60 year round. It was actually cheaper because heat is more expensive than air conditioning.

Thanks for the rest. I'll keep that in mind. No money for a new pillow, but we're going to try to find a cheep fan and Ill try the thing with the ice water.

Re: Advice

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck--I think the combination of the cool water and the fan might help. And maybe a couple of cotton maxi dresses for daytime?

Re: Advice

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
I sympathize. I like cool temperatures, and just melt and feel immensely uncomfortable in the heat. I absolutely know the feeling of not being able to sleep in the heat - my current apartment doesn't have AC at all. 80 degrees is way too hot for me, too. Anyway you can ask your parents for a little compromise? Maybe 75 degrees instead? They shouldn't feel too much of a difference, but it might help for you. I think it's completely normal to talk to them about it. Obviously it is there house so they get the final say, but I'd think your parents wouldn't might adjusting a little for you to be comfortable. I'd think a couple of degrees shouldn't make a huge difference, especially if you explain it's too hot for you to sleep.

Otherwise, there are apparently "portable air conditioners" that you might be able to get for your room. Don't know how well they work and the cost over a hundred dollars. For me, fans themselves aren't usually enough to cool me down if they are just blowing around hot air, but maybe one large one could help you too.
