(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)It's just... bad. Charmless. The location has no chance to shine, and the main character is your standard gormless but attentive teenager. Think Renton Thurston without Eureka as a driving motivation. There are hundreds of Badass Ragtag Team Fights The Things stories out there, and there's nothing but Nightow's name to compel me to keep buying volumes. If he wants that old dude to be the main character then he should have the balls to just make him the main character, because the main guy from B3 ain't a patch on Hellsing's Kitten, so it's no way to be shown a likeable character from an outsider perspective.
tl;dr I liked this manga better when it was The Demon Ororon and it was bleak as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)Bite me, the comment wasn't meant for you. I've got two degrees in literature and I've been collecting manga for a decade. Why should I pretend I'm only interested in things with a certain number of readers? I collect fashionable manga and less mainstream stuff. Trigun was actually very mainstream, and the anime aired on Adult Swim iirc (I'm not American). I don't see why I shouldn't have comparatively niche interests like any nerd.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know why you're assuming I'm a snob. I just like to talk about manga sometimes. Isn't that one of the many things f!s can be used for? I'm not judging other people when they talk at length about things I'm not particularly interested in. And this is actually my third secret posted this week - the other two were for mildly obscure fandoms too. I note you didn't come to hassle me on them.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)Then what on earth is it about? That I dared to put my criticism of and concern about a mangaka's current series in the context of his previous work, and the works and genre of which it is derivative?
That's... the gist of the original secret? Why is this a problem? Why do you need to try to tear me down?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)Resorting to insults proves you know you're wrong, but you just can't admit it.
The other person's comment above was perfectly reasonable. They have a hobby and they like to enjoy it intelligently, so what?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)Thank you, other anon. I was starting to think I'd actually done something odd in this thread, and you made me feel a bit better. Then my girlfriend woke up from what seemed to be a very intense dream about sausages, read the thread, and agreed that the troll came out of freakin' nowhere, so I guess I don't mind now. It's just... why even do that? Maybe I'm not in the greatest place right now. Maybe I am feeling it a bit about not living up to the promise of my degrees. Why is that any of troll!anon's business? Why've they got to attack people to feel good about themselves?
Eh, probably answered my own question there.

But are you a top Navy SEAL with over 300 confirmed kills?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)yes yes, alright, and I sell monogrammed thermos flasks, DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM etc. Just trying to add a bit of context for why I immediately wanted to start analysing why I wasn't enjoying the manga, and putting it into context with other stuff, since that's what the jerk upthread seemed to be getting hot under the collar about.
Also those degrees ain't shit where I live; I have a part-time job in an industrial kitchen. I'm okay with that.

But I still love Trigun. Nothing can pry Trigun from me.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)Yeah! That's it! That's the feeling I've been trying to describe. I don't think it helps that I was reading it at around the same time as Gangsta., which is kind of the polar opposite in that respect. It kind of seems like he's imitating Kouta Hirano's style, where stuff plays out in the negative space of events, and you sort of witness characters trusting each other differently over time, without seeing much of the domesticity which must be aiding that closeness. Like... maybe Nightow isn't good enough to carry that off. Maybe the main character needs to be brash, or needs to keep his friends at arm's length. I guess he was trying hard to do the opposite of Trigun. I guess he achieved that.

Maybe it's just that "found family" is such a stock trope of shonen manga/anime that Nightow took it for granted this time. With Trigun, Vash was such an important figure within his own world that it felt right that everyone knew and gravitated toward him and fell into place. Leonardo, not so much (which is a shame because damn, those eyes, what a great design).

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 11:07 am (UTC)(link)the whole gang together hanging out and having fun and showcasing their personality quirks.
This is vital to me if the show makes a point about how important friendship is or how one person brought everyone else together. Neglect that and I'll be scratching my head over why the people are friends. And if they do or say things that go directly against this and they don't get called out on it? Then I'll be wondering what the show runners are thinking.
Looking at you, Sailor Moon Crystal. It took me reading the manga and watching the other adaptations to get why people consider SM to have good female friendships.

It was a bit scattered for me, but I did enjoy it and found it kind of refreshing relative to other shows that have come out recently (though my favorite of this season is Gangsta. That one's fun~)
