Many people are going to expect him to be a miracle cure all for the US problems and not bother to change congress as well. Additionally since he's perceived by some as more radical (and a socialist lol) than other democratic candidates further dividing the conservative/republican divide. I wouldn't be surprised if he was assassinated either.

He's best left to pushing Hilary more progressive as much as I like him.

I think he would probably be a better president than Hillary. He wouldn't live up to peoples' stupid expectations, no, but people are going to be stupid no matter who gets elected.

And I don't think he would exacerbate the partisan divide, in the sense that I think the Republican Party will probably maintain a policy of die-hard obstructionism during any Democratic administration.

Of course it's a moot point as he's very unlikely to win the primary, let alone the general.

Yup. It doesn't really matter which Democrat is president, the Republicans at this point care more about being obstructive than they do about actually even pushing their own agenda or doing anything productive. They'll protest even something they like if it is pushed by a democrat.

I want him to win for that reason. If he wins, even if he accomplishes nothing at all, it sends a message that the US as a whole is leaning more and more left, and both parties had better find more left-leaning candidates or risk never having a party member sit in the White House.

I agree that nominating no-hope leftist candidates would be a very effective way to move the Democratic Party to the left (see: Goldwater 64).

However, at this point, I think it would just do too much harm to let a Republican actually win the election. In terms of Supreme Court nominations alone - say goodbye to Roe, just for starters. The trade-off just is not worth it. You gotta nominate an electable candidate.

I saw a thing on the Yahoo! News headline scroll yesterday about how the Planned Parenthood debate might lead to a government shutdown. 'Cause naturally that's something we'd totally need, I guess.

The Republicans' obsession with the Planned Parenthood/abortion issue in general is indeed one of the biggest reasons I do not want them running the country anytime soon (if ever, presuming they never get off that issue). For a party that likes to harp on about being supportive of limited government, and the pointlessness of regulations, all of those beliefs sure seem to fly out the window REAL quick when it comes to women's health issues.

They threaten us with government shutdown every year. It's old hat at this point and all us federal employees are resigned to the fact that our jobs are under constant threat.

Ugh. That sucks, I'm sorry.

So comforting to know we've elected overgrown children to Congress, really :/.

So, is that someone who mobilizes the Left, or someone the voters hold their noses for?

I made this same argument for Obama seven years ago. What was accomplished? We got a moderate Democratic President and an extremist GOP Congress.

I figure the Democrats need a big issue to mobilize voters AND down-ticket candidates. Single-payer health insurance, a living wage, and free post-secondary education may be better than whatever Hillary Clinton stands for.

I want to have this argument, and I want to hear the candidates sound off on it, not just tell me I just have to vote Democrat. "Just voting Democrat" hasn't worked out so well for people in my state. We need better Democrats.

Yes. This. The Democrats need to grow a freaking spine and stand up for the things they claim to support, and quit worrying about pissing off Republicans or feel shame for being a-gasp, shock, horror-liberal!. We might actually get somewhere if we did that.

A moderate Democratic president, an extremist GOP congress, and Elena Kagan & Sonya Sotomayor.

I want to have this argument, and I want to hear the candidates sound off on it, not just tell me I just have to vote Democrat. "Just voting Democrat" hasn't worked out so well for people in my state. We need better Democrats.

I agree in principle, but also, you just have to vote Democrat (at least if you live in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, or Maine; votes for president don't really matter outside of those states).

I think it's important to develop the party and get better Democrats. Feel free to primary the fuck out of your reps, your senators, your state pols, your mayors. Organize people all you want, get as many people into the party as you can, convert people to your views, do all that stuff to change the party. All of that is great and a great way to improve the party and get better Democrats.

But you simply cannot fuck around with keeping a Democrat in the White House. The stakes are too high.
