Queerbaiting shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
After Hannibal's wonderful finale I finally came to the conclusion I'm not comfortable with queerbaiting anymore.
Johnlock, Sterek, Destiel? No way, Jose. GTFO.

I've wanted to start Rizzoli & Isles for a long time but I've heard the queerbaiting gets really infuriating.

SO.

What are some shows that walked a fine line between subtext, actual text and queerbaiting at first but then eliminated the queerbaiting part completely. Any recs? (And yes, I've seen House M.D. and Xena)

Legend of Korra?

+1

Is LOK really queerbaiting? I mean, Asami and Korra weren't touching each other and falling into each other's laps and then going "no homo" after.

I think AYRT is saying that it's NOT queerbaiting

Because, I mean, what you said but also more importantly they are supergay

Well, there was Glee with Santana and Brittany. It got terrible, but they did become an actual couple when at first they were just a running gag.

The "no homo" in seasons 9 & 10 Supernatural was just uncomfortable.

forreal

at this point it's just embarrassing

Re: Queerbaiting shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Was it bad? I have a friend that wants to force me to watch them with her (I've seen up through 8), and it was ALREADY pretty uncomfortable for me. Does it really go for it now?

Re: Queerbaiting shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
They're never gonna be gay but the show is intent on teasing the audience because it's the only reason people still tune in.

It's really, really bad and aggravating.

Hawaii Five-0 maybe? I feel like some people will probably disagree, but I can't think of anything specifically homophobic or no homo-ish in the show, or at least no moreso than House.

Re: Queerbaiting shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
House was more subtext at the beginning. Then during that season where House and Wilson pretend to be gay for an episode + some other stuff it became queerbaiting imo, but the show redeemed itself in the last final episodes where it became clear that yes they love each other. It's just not *that* kinda love unless something happened after the finale. Point is, the show cleared up about their relationship and stopped baiting.

Hawaii Five-0 is straight up queerbaiting imo, sorry.

I am getting skeptical about the basic idea of queerbaiting tbh, so I'm not really sure how to answer this question.

It seems like the main constituent function that determines if something is queerbaiting is if fans decide to ship it

Re: Queerbaiting shows?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, queerbaiting has to be done deliberately by the director in order to be queerbaiting. It toys with the idea, but whenever it gets too "intimate", it backs away with a clear no homo. I agree the concept can be vague and not always 100%, and the line between subtext and baiting can be kind of vague too. But I'd say the concept is easier to recognize when done with two sexy female characters for a "mainstream" audience, where there seems to be something queer going on for the sake of titillating the audience, only for them to have boyfriends at the end. (with no exploration of actual bi/gay feelings)

Re: Queerbaiting shows?

Queerbaiting is when a show decides they want a LGBT audience but they never go through with it.
So for example when two characters act kinda gay and it seems like there might be something there, but then the show loudly proclaims that "LOL NO HOMO THEY'RE HETEROSEXUAL".

The difference between subtext and queerbaiting is that subtext is devoid of "no homo" jokes. With queerbaiting the show goes out of its way to explain that these characters are soooo straight. They could never be gay, even though the characters are constantly thrown into sexually ambiguous situations. The gay gets played up but never turns into something meaningful. At the same time, the showrunners are pussyfooting around the issue and never say yes or no. It's always a maybe even though what they really mean is no.

Legend of the Seeker somewhat? For the Mord’Sith? It's femslash, not slash, though, if that makes a difference.

BSG has some F/F and F/M/F. (I haven't watched the last season yet, though. And it was only a minor part.)

I think Leverage did a good job with the OT3.

Sense 8 is an obvious one.

Grey's Anatomy? Just the one relationship that I can think of, and again, it is femslash, not slash.

And now I'm blanking. Which is rather sad, as there should be more.

da

Grey's Anatomy reminded me of How To Get Away With Murder.

Halt and Catch Fire
Torchwood
Spartacus (from season 3 onwards iirc?)
Lost Girl (it seems like the main character is gonna end in a hetero relationship at first, but keep watching)
Orphan Black
House of Cards
Transparent
Orange is The New Black (duh)

if you're into comics, try the new Harley Quinn series, Runaways and Young Avengers (+ maaaaybe Loki: Agent of Asgard but we'll see)

if you're into anime, check out Samurai Flamenco, From the New World and
Gankutsuou

Spartacus always had queer characters though. (And I can't think of any particular ship that they 'teased' and didn't go through with.) There's only 3 seasons. (Well, and a prologue that came...after season one I think? So kind of 4.)

Halt and Catch Fire has queerbaiting? Or is this shows with queer characters and no/very minimal "queerbaiting"?

I don't think it's much of a thing. Fandom can't in to close friendships, so obviously the just made all their close interactions happen to bait all the fans who want the gay. It's not like they could be friends have close interactions ever, that's only reserved for people who've done the dirty deed together.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Due South? Has the two invading personal space, one admitting that he finds his partner attractive (as a woman) at the insistence of the other and they end the series going off on an adventure together into the sunset.
